Excellent price and a two year warranty... Very hot deal

These drives seem to keep coming up but are they any good?

I need 3TB to replace my 1.5TB Samsung Story Station that's nearly full

Great price, good find OP. Heat. Can't comment on the reliability of a Toshiba drive (I prefer/buy Seagate), but considering it has a 2 year warranty, it's a good deal.

I have never met anyone who prefers seagate! I guess it is just what you have had personal experience with. Even in the small sample of HDDs that I have had over the years, the seagate drive are the ones that have failed most often.

I have this drive and it has worked well for the month or two I have used it for.

the last few I bought from Amazon arrived with this drive inside. easy to open as well.

Good to see the price on these 3tb drives finally dropping.

those who have this, what is the usb length?

Hey you should check this out, fits your needs.

I bought this a few weeks ago. I was really after an internal drive for my nas so had to tear up the casing. It was relatively easy to do.

For anyone else looking for internals.. don't be afraid to buy this one.

Toshiba computer accessories aren't very good in my opinion. Just look at all the broken Toshiba laptops etc for sale on ebay. Seagate or Western digital are more reliable hard drives.

Good price though!

Sweet find. Just ordered one. Took me a while to part with the cash but was reassured at the saving of £100 and the 2 year warranty.. Heat

Wondering how much cheaper could flubit offers this?

My father bought one of these at my recommendation but sent it back because he didn't like the backup software that came with it. There was some other issue he had about block sizes, I think, but that's easily fixed by re-formatting it.

My advice is: buy it, copy the software off of it, re-format it and then start using it.

This is a bargain - voted hot!

I think you'll just find Toshiba sell a lot of their budget laptops in the UK, hence budget level build quality and likelihood of failure. If u pay more than u get quality equipment.

Works the same with many brands across all electronics. That's why most budget TVs are manufactured by Vestal or UMC despite selling with Sony, Toshiba etc on the facia.

In the case of hard disks, these Toshibas are relabeled Hitachi which makes them as reliable, if not more so, than others. Before Toshiba took over they would have been sold as Western Digital and before that HGST (Hitachi), but all the same designs and manufacture.

Cheers OP.

Now I've got a couple on their way with a new NAS caddy from ebuyer.

Fingers crossed I can make a remote backup on my home system at work.

Just send one back yesterday - wish I checked all the recent Amazon reviews. The unit has some weird firmware that keeps sending the drive to sleep - but unfortunately it never wakes up again and disappears from the Device Manager. (Win7 pro) Only reappears after rebooting - but it only is recognised again after reformatting. Of course, losing all your copied over data. And it did the same thing on three attempts.

Toshiba support is non-existent, but via helpful members contributions & posts on the Support Forum - so I knew I wasn't alone! - found a wee Toshiba utility - Toshiba Sleep Removal Tool v1.01- to remove the spin down. Didn't work. Other 'solutions' were to use NoSleepHD or CrystalDiscInfo to alter the drive parameters. The thread is here

Didn't have any joy with them, shouldn't really have to f*nny about so much with a new product, so after hours of work and effort, got totally fed up and decided to cut my losses and fire it back via Amazon's pain free Returns Process for a refund. Couldn't be arsed just taking the drive out - would never have any confidence in it and of course, no warranty

Your experience with it may vary as they say, but my most disappointing product after 25 years with I.T. Only problem, what now for an external back up, don't like Seagates either ...

Fully agree with you AMD, every Toshiba drive we have bought has failed, and we buy a lot of components. Customer service is rubbish too....I wouldn't buy another Toshiba drive.....

Not the greatest value for a 3TB; but I've read good things about it. Would be tempted if I hadn't got one a few weeks back.

great deal

Best I managed to pay for a 3TB was £72 inc delivery. But that was a (brand new) Seagate, about 4 months ago, from eBay.
I am curious to hear what you consider "greatest value" - if you bought a 3TB, how much did you get it for and from where? Did I miss a deal?

FWIW, I think £25/TB is pretty good value.

TBH I was thinking the same ...when did I miss a better deal?

Great for all those wanting to stock up on porn before Dave bans it.

Tosh offer three year warranty on this drive series in the States. Presumably Tosh has less faith in its products when purchased in UK.
Surely no one actually makes a purchase decision influenced by the usual Amazon discount from RRP hype?
Decent price ignoring the questionable Amazon discounted RRP marketing techniques.

I got 2 the other week and they've been great so far, although they're not the fastest drives. Will be needing another soon but will probably splash out on a 4-bay NAS to save on plug sockets.

I'll stick with amazon and pay the extra 1.5% for their no questions asked returns when compared to the hot **** probe of ebuyer.

Did you get sorted?

Toshiba - very unreliable...Might be cheap but I wouldn't store anything of value on it

price keeps dropping, must be near the bottom now!

Here we go again. I'm sure they're using Hitachi 3.5" drives inside since they bought out the Hitachi desktop drive division.

think its a gamble what ever drive you buy ....

Banned

I think they use Hitachi. Hitachi for OEM and Toshiba for retail.

Yes these have Hitachi 5,900RPM drives in them and (if the couple I have are anything to go by) these drives run both cool and quiet - hard to knock at this sort of price.

not yet im waiting for replacement from dabs
