I think that's preferable to Windows 8. Or install Classic Shell rather than return it.

Excellent laptop. Bought it before for my daughter. It was like new. Windows 10 installed on it. Heat added

Toshiba laptop sucks

I had the x230 i7 with 256gb ssd and 8gb ram. I loved it. The huge battery gave me 8hrs minimum use.

A bargain.

It is a nice laptop for the money but the screen hinges are flimsy.

good laptop generally but has a common issue on cpu fan which cuts out easily causing cpu to overheat and essentially laptop shuts down unexpecedly :p.

You really need to think about what you are using the laptop for. This model is very poor for games and offers only a small boost in performance over celeron and pentium models. The best thing about intel laptops is normally battery life but I don't know the spec of the battery for this model. Some intel laptops come with small capacity batteries which negate their efficient low power cpu design.

Personally I think this is better. It's a much more powerful laptop by brute force rather than elegance and offers good gaming performance that will allow it to play even the latest games albeit at the 720p resolution of the screen and at minimum settings. I'm sure battery life won't be as good but I'd personally rather have the benefit of far superior speed, gaming performance and media playback.

ebay.co.uk/itm…223

The only thing with these AMD laptops is you must make sure dual memory channels are operating. If the laptop ships lets say with a single 8gb sodimm instead of 2 4gb sodimms the memory bandwidth will be far less and it will severely restrict gaming performance because of the memory bottleneck.

Also it doesn't look like anyone else is selling a A10 8700p for anywhere close to that price outside ebay.

Interestingly Argos are also selling the black, 4GB RAM version of the refurbished L50-C for £169.99. You can add a 4GB DDR3L SODIMM for around £18, so you can save another £22 if you're prepared to upgrade the RAM yourself. Link is here. I bought one last week for a friend who needed a basic Windows laptop. What I was sent was an L50-C-20G, which had Windows 10 installed, and the slightly faster and newer i3-5005u 2GHz CPU (other specs identical).

DO NOT BUY! 1.7 GhZ is absolutely rubbish. Absolute rip off for a refurbished laptop.

Yep, get the one with the 4GHz Pentium 4 its much faster.

The battery life of a laptop with an intel CPU is no diffirent to any other laptop. The type of CPU has nothing to do with the battery life. The life of the battery is determined by how much power the laptop is using.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say, battery life is determined by the cpu type, the fabrication process, the capacity of the battery included and the power management of the chip. Lots of factors. The main thing that gives Intel better battery life over typical AMD models is the fabrication process. Currently 28nm for AMD I think and 22nm for Intel which gives Intel an advantage but then if the intel laptop comes with a battery pack with less cells and lower capacity cells than an AMD model that battery lifespan advantage may be lost. Also AMD chipsets often have more sophisticated and capable GPU's so consume a little more power there too when running games.

My mother has an intel celeron laptop N2830 or similar at 2.16ghz and she gets over 8 hours runtime but the same chipset in other laptops can get as little as 3 hours using the lowest capacity battery pack possible.

This intel laptop looks to offer mid-level cpu performance with a lower level igpu and should offer good battery life depending on capacity of battery pack supplied.

Jamhun. Write some more about CPUs please.

I wouldn't go to say as far as they sucked but they aren't what they once were. Dunno what happened to Toshiba...once upon a time they were industry stalwarts with brilliant laptops...ah my old Tecra 8000...think it's still in the loft somewhere...

I would imagine Toshiba laptops are just a brand slap on some taiwanese/chinese manufacturer product possibly foxconn. Just like a Toshiba tv is just a vestel for most models nowadays. Toshiba are withdrawing from laptops as the margins are non-existent for most companies except Apple.

Great laptop if it comes with a decent battery and all you do is word process and browse because battery runtime will be great but the chipset is very low power, could be used in tablets. Its 4 low power atom type processors and a very basic gpu. Again if you don't watch video or play games and don't use applications that benefit from more cpu or gpu performance then it could be a good choice but not at that price I would of thought.

Not in my experience. Had 2 Toshibas myself (Satellite Pros), and got my dad one for father's day (Satellite) and never had issues with any of them. One of my Toshibas is 8 years old and other than a dead battery works perfectly.

The type of processor can have a huge effect on battery life!

yes cpu has massive difference as does gpu. Intel i5 u for example is designed to run at low power so uses less power than normal i5, also atom netbooks often last 10hrs but of course run like a lada on 3 cyclinders. However new laptops often a lot thinner and so have less space for battery cells, noticed massive difference in battery size between a older i5 laptop and newer one with some offered at 2cell.

Certainly their after sales service does. When mine blew up i sent it off to claim under warranty. They told me it was water damaged (certainly bloody wasn't) and told me i couldn't have the laptop back unless i paid them £50 to send it to me. Never ever again.

Toshiba very nice machines and very reliable , I would buy one if i needed it.
But i would never recommend refurb to a consumer!

Battery life is donw to cpu - but modern cpus can switch cores off and old intel speedstep tech as well as windows power enhancements especially switching off things like wireless which use a lot of power can make it last longer.

The type of 18650 battery in the laptop battery also makes a difference - Dell use good quality 18650's but you can hack any laptop battery to provide it with more capacity by using toppo quality Panasonic 18650's and not the ultrafire el cheapo ones rated at 9900mah on ebay lol

Sold out now but there are b grade 4gb versions still available.

ebay.co.uk/itm…524?hash=item4d4583c99c:g:8w4AAOSw65FXq7hD

Only about £15 to upgrade the memory to 8gb

or with 8gb here;

ebay.co.uk/itm…680?hash=item51e6455618:g:-vAAAOSwA3tXonzR

Some strange pricing with regard some models. Some of the basic AMD chipset models are more expensive than the AMD's higher end A10 models and there can be a generational difference too creating a wider performance difference.

So take a selfie.

Has anyone come across any i5 or i7, for not a silly amount more? As I am debating do I get another laptop (currently writing on my i5 3230m), or fix my base unit. Not sure if the power supply is knackered or the motherboard has given up.

It's the same laptop as the original deal, just in a (gloss) black colour, and with a single 4GB SODIMM fitted. I posted the following earlier in the thread : Argos are also selling the black, 4GB RAM version of the refurbished L50-C for £169.99. You can add a 4GB DDR3L SODIMM for around £18, so you can save another £22 if you're prepared to upgrade the RAM yourself. I bought one last week for a friend who needed a basic Windows laptop. What I was sent was an L50-C-20G, which had Windows 10 installed, and the slightly faster and newer i3-5005u 2GHz CPU (other specs identical).

Mine arrived in a Toshiba box with a "Refurbished" sticker, the only marks were some sticky remains on the top of the lid which were easily removed with some Isopropyl alcohol. Otherwise it appeared almost as new, still had the plastic coverings on the front and sides. I've since upgraded it with a 4GB DDR3L SODIMM and replaced the 1TB hard disk with a 500GB SSD. it performs well and I'm guessing the battery life at around 5-6 hours depending upon load.
