I was surprised to only be able to find it posted here at £229, especially when Amazon had a flash £199 deal recently.

Maybe you should post that - judging by how hot the £229 before cashback deals have gotten.

BuzzDuraband

For info there is a £200 spend on the code and ends 31/07 (will probably be pulled before then when they realise their PS4 bundles are out of stock Monday morning). The t's and c's of the code state this is only valid with a co-op membership number. So I would suggest to anyone if they plan to make a purchase using the code then retrospectively apply for co-op membership which is free co-operative.coop/mem…ip/

If you work for the co-op you can get an additional 5% discount on top

I tried one out in John Lewis and while it wasn't solid aluminium like a MacBook it didn't look like the kind of finish that would scratch. It has a geometric texture on the lid and isn't a glossy finish.

http://www.houseofjapan.com/images/2014/01/toshibachromegal3.jpg

It definitely isn't built like a tank like some more expensive laptops but it's a hell of a lot better than most budget rubbish.

just nice price

I owned this unit for a few weeks after picking it up from Amazon. It's a lovely looking thing, with a fantastic keyboard but (in my opinion) the screen was very washed out, with poor viewing angles.

Does anyone know which Chromebook has the best screen? I've yet to try the HP Chromebook 11.

I got the HP 11 because it had the best screen. Especially at £180 from PC world atm its a no brainer

I have the Acer C720 and love it. Today though I have been adding some data to a spreadsheet, not a huge one, and it seems to be running quite slowly. I've closed a load of tabs on the browser but still pretty slow. Not sure if this is a ram issue.
The only other issue I have is I need to connect to a VPN for work and it doesn't work with a Chromebook which is a shame.

Many people compare Chromebooks to laptops but really they are in the same market as tablets. I replaced my ipad with a Nexus 7 and now that with a Chromebook.

Is there a way to add windows software to it?

And are there ways to view word, excell etc

No Windows software. Think of a Chromebook as just being a Chrome browser and nothing else.
That is one thing that Chrome lacks being able to access a local network drive.

You can view, edit and create Word, Excel etc using Google's compatible version of the software.

You have Google Docs which syncs through all your Android devices and with Google Drive for Windows and Mac, so you'll always be able to look at and work on the latest versions of your Microsoft Office files wherever you are (with a network connection of course). You could also just use a USB flash drive or portable HDD if you're not a cloud person.

You can't run specifically-for-Windows software natively but you'd need to better describe what you need to do before we can offer any advice.

In any media server I've used before, the files on the server can be accessed by using any normal media player or file explorer using the SMB or AFP file protocol.

To administer it there's usually a Web UI (accessed using the server's LAN IP in a web browser) or it can be done locally using a screen and peripherals.

All of that you could do easily on a Chromebook using the built in applications.
