You could upgrade the ram to 8gb for about £26-28 from ebuyer or novatech ( 2 x slots, 1 x 4gb fitted, max ram 16gb)

Seems this maybe eligible for £100 cash back when you trade in an older qualifying laptop, this is according to ebuyer (http://www.ebuyer.com/452689-toshiba-satellite-pro-l870-17x-laptop-pskfpe-00f00men)

Get win 7 upgrade to 8gb
Then replace HDD with SSD, and re-install W7.
SSD - best upgrade you'll ever do.
Would not now use a PC/Laptop/Ubook without proper SSD.
PC without SSD is like SWAC.

Providing you have a start menu add-on (such as Start8, startisback), Windows 8 is actually very good. I use Start8 and you never really have to see the Metro/Modern UI. It even allows you to remove Windows 8 gestures.

Granted you shouldn't really have to look for an after-market solution for the start menu, but once you have one, you get to enjoy the speed of Windows 8 without losing out on the benefits of a start menu.
How would this cope with Rome total war 2?

7670m Gpu will perform similar like desktop GTX260 GPU, so should be ok. Its twice more powerful than HD5000 integrated GPU.
>>>Usually dispatched within 2 - 4 weeks.
Why is everyone knocking win8. I,ve had it now for 3 months and think it,s great once you get used to it,don,t be so lazy and get in there !!!

Very good deal, will some explain how's the display (1600 * 900) is close to HD, because currently i have 1376 - 768, how much exactly is different in 17inch comparing to the 1376 ?????????

I have i7 now, but ordered just to enjoy better screen and display

Win 8.1 out soon (late August) which brings back the start button. Hooray! Quotes: "More than a service pack....easier to learn...more consistent". Personally I like the Metro UI and find the whole thing pretty easy, but I can understand why people see it as more difficult to learn and understand.

Not true at all unfortunately, certainly the first bit any. The 7670m has performance no where near the GTX260. I know passmark isn't a perfect thing to go by, but then again testing a mobile vs desktop is hard. The 7670m gets 836 the GTX260 gets 1,115.
The GTX260m is very much like the 9800m GTX, the 7670m sits right in the middle of those cards with barely anything in between. But the non mobile GTX260 can not be directly compared to the GTX260m. The GTX260m is nearly as good as a desktop 9800GT and this is how that does compared to a desktop GTX260

1280x720 is classified as Standard HD. 1920x1080 is classified as Full HD. 1600x900 is about halfway between.

to be honest, 900p will be enough for a 17.3inch monitor. Any resolutions go beyond 900p the graphical inprovement will be hardly noticible. (unless you plan to connect your laptop to a bigger screen).

People want a start button WITH a menu. 8.2?
This is a seriously good deal, the best one I've seen for laptops this year!
When I get this, I'll install a clean copy of Windows 7 on it and that's it! Happy times
Thanks for posting!

Thats because its a laptop

Was keen til I read about the daft layout:

USB ports + headphone port are lower RH side - exactly where a RH user … USB ports + headphone port are lower RH side - exactly where a RH user has a mouse so you are constantly snagging a USB stick or headphone cable with the mouse.

According to amazon, my current laptop was first available in November 2009, so presumably would be valid for the 100 quid Toshiba cash back deal, making this a stonking offer, right?

Go there and try the instant trade in part and see if it allows your laptop. (only certain makes etc are allowed)

A Lot of smart phones have a 720 or 1080 resolution and they are only 4-6" in size and are held at nearly the same length away as a laptop would be, so higher than 900 on a 17" screen is very noticable.
Well I order this last week (1st August), and received the laptop today for the above price, hopefully get the old laptop trade-in to work for a nice 100-150 quid saving. Nice find OP.
I too ordered one before the price went up and received it a few days ago. Not going to bother with the Toshiba trade-in though as I don't think it is worth it. They specify that the laptop has to be in good working condition with HDD, Opt Drive, Battery, Power Adapter and less than 4 years old to qualify for the £100. My 3 year old laptop is dead so not valid. However I can still sell it on eBay as damaged/spares for about the same money or break it down and sell it for parts to get well above £100
