Nice find, my laptop just died on me yesterday. What's this AMD processor like compared to an Intel i5?

I'm not sure but I think they are very similar.
Just bear in mind that this doesn't have a disc drive in case you need one.
I didn't notice until after I'd ordered, luckily I don't need it! X)

Intrigued.....the spec says 1TB hard drive.....and how do you manage to boot up an OS without the drive you say you don't need?

768p at this price and doesn't say anything about it being an ips, very disappointing especially that it's also AMD, not very powerful or efficient so battery life should also be bad.

I'd imagine it's pre-installed or you could install from a usb drive.
Not had experience of it yet though, I'll let you know when I collect it tomorrow. X)

I was waiting on the 'not full HD' comments, I don't see many, if any, laptops at this price with 1080 screens.
Not a specs expert by any stretch but I still think it's good value for a slim attractive well specced laptop.

All comes down to whay your needs ( or maybes wants is more accurate when it comes to tech ) of a laptop are at the end of the day. You can get a full HD ips Toshiba Chromebook for under £300. The celeron processor the tosh chromebook comes with is a bit pants and chromeos maybe limited depending on your requirments but if screen, battery life, silent running (passive cooling) is your main priority and you just want something to browse the web, check email and do the occaisonal document/spreadsheet on then it's an ideal package.

I think many folks are just fed up with vendors shipping units with 768 TN pannels in a world where there are super cheap tablets with crazy dpi ips screens.

Anyways, it's John Lewis so returns are likely not an issue if it doesn't meet expectations.

Always opt for Intel over AMD if you can- AMD produce so much heat over Intel plus battery life is nowhere near as good

But these play minecraft

Windows will be pre-installed with a recovery partition should you ever need to reinstall.

Would this be a better buy than the lenovo g50 i3 at currys for 299??

how does this toshiba satelliut S50D at John Lewis for 349 compare with the HP Pavillion 245 that PCW are doing for 349 (allegedly "was £500")l? Given latter is intel i3 should i go for that? Only using for non gaming

Thats not mostly true.

It's not about brand vs brand.

You have to look at it CPU model vs model. AMD is fail for the majority of Desktop but not for Laptops.
