Thanks for the info.

Another question comes to mind. This is USB2 with 5mb write speed. If I buy myself a USB3 drive, will I automatically get the highest possible USB2 speed when plugged into a USB2 port?

I'm not 100% sure, I would like to think so as I have a Seagate 2TB 3.0 HDD in a 2.0 slot.

i have a 4gb one and win 7 and 8 do not see it, installing driver fails, all my other usb drives work

I have one of these. Pretty sure it isn't authentic Toshiba and it's insanely slow

Can get you the 8GB at £2 inc VAT so nothing special and also the 16 and 32GB cheaper.

Go on then share the deal are they genuine?

I got some of these from eBuyer have been fine for low cost USB Storage, well made the cap is easy to misplace but the units are well made and not too slow (c.f. the Sandisk low end units of the same size) I use mine for Win8.1 Installer with room for Office 2013 and Start8 etc. Works well over USB2 and USB3 no issues to report.

I've used these on USB3 and the speed does improve a little the speed depends on the speed of the source, the filesystem and the size of the file. If you want maximum speed do not use Explorer in Windows use FastCopy or another fast copying tool. USB maxes out at 60-80mbs

If you copy alot of large files over USB then USB3 makes sense and yes even on a drive like this you will see improvements in xfer times. If you copy HD to HD jobs that take days will take hours. Note that Window Support for USB3 is patchy avoid the 4 port PCI card with Via chips go with the 2 port Nec chips if you have an older motherboard. Sandybridge era or later should be ok, Win8 and 8.1 have improved USB3 support. On USB the difference between flash drives becomes clear, it can be hard to tell on USB2.

As with most things it a trade off between space and time. Cost is a function of your time
