Personally i would look for something with 802.11AC spec (wifi 5) for USB2.0, it offers greater compatiblity and speed.
I use this on my desktop when I need to tether to my phone when I lose broadband connectivity.

    amazon.co.uk/U9-…PTL

Tenda U9 AC650, and can be had for around £6.

    It's better spec'd than the TP-Link one.

    needs usb c

Usb c would be a very niche requirement so couldn't see these moving to that yet. Yes you can get USB c on desktops but you'll usually have one, which would be wasted for something like this. And laptops with more usb c ports will have better wireless than this build in.

Yes, this is more than adequate for your Desktop /Laptop.
It's 802.11 AC spec (Wi-Fi 5). As the spec suggests:
    400 mbps on 2 4GHz, 867 mbps on 5GHz

Often this is only the link speed between your computer and your router /Access point.
What does this mean for you, well in clear line of sight without obstructions, you can theoretically get close to the speed if your router / access pointsupports it. (Key word theoretical)

Real world speed (base on hardware compatibility):
    2.4 GHz: 72 to 200mbps
    5 GHz: 200 to 700mbps

Since this USB Wi-Fi adaptor has an omnidirectional antennayou can focus the antenna for better signal.
In terms of software support, you don’t need anythingspecial, windows 10 will automatically install the software.

I've got one of these in a Raspberry Pi. Excellent little dongles, worked right out of the box

Do these even exist? If so, can you point me in the right direction? Would love to take advantage of the higher throughout of USB C, but I've never seen one for sale anywhere

Not much point, usb3 gives enough bandwidth at the moment for these types of dongles. What device do you need one for and what speed router do you have?

It's a 300mbit network adapter. USB 2.0 is 480mbit. USB C is just a socket shape anyway. Doesn't mean it's gonna be 3.2 or something. Most phones with Type C are only 2.0 connections when plugged into a PC. USB 3.0 would be useful if it was a much much faster adapter, but it's not.

For PC, mainly for sharing across a local network. Currently using Google WiFi mesh, so maxes out at 1200mbps bandwidth I believe. Basically want to try and improve my Steam Link experience!

Tbh you really want to look at an internal card if you have room? You'll need a single PCI express x16 slot free.

True but some still require a x16 slot, even if they only use 1 lane

Unfortunately I decided to go for aesthetics over function with my PC and vertically mounted my GPU. So no space for any PCIe cards!

Starting to think that ethernet to powerline adapter and into one of my nodes is the way to go

Pretty sure bring Wireless N would be a biggest issue, with some router/data point devices don't support older than AC standard.

I got a card like this when my USB dongle one broke
It was way too slow so I upgraded to a internal one with Bluetooth since I needed a Bluetooth adapter anyway and it much better

I got one of these mini ones after my old broke and I found it to be useless I don't even have fast WiFi and it was running 1/3 my wifi speed

I'm guessing you mean expansion slot and not x16 pcie slot.
Most affordable wifi card's for desktop computers even with 802.11AX spec are just pcie x1.

Not all PCI-E x16 slots are electircally wired for 16 lanes.

Consumer motherboards if it has three PCI-E x16 slots, this usually means it's configured as:
PCI-E x16 slot (electrically wired for 16 lanes) - Top slot
PCI-E x16 slot (electrically wired for 8 lanes) - Middle slot
PCI-E x16 slot (electrically wired for 4 lanes) - Bottom slot

Whereas workstation grade motherboards all the PCI-E x16 slots are electrically wired for 16 lanes.

    Hopefully this brings some clarity

I meant x16 PCI express slot because the majority of cards I see still use the larger x16 slot even if they don't require the full x16 lanes. As you said, x16 slot that's wired for x8/x4 or even x1 will do.
