Just make sure you buy on a credit card for consumer protection in case it breaks.
See the news - Maplin are going or have gone into administration today.
I personally wouldn't buy from Maplin right now

Good riddance to maplin if they do end up going down, always been a horrible place to shop in and everything is incredibly overpriced.

I'd be sad to see ToysRus go though.

Won't happen. They'll sell off any stock worth having to another retailer rather than to the public.
Maplin was unique but so overpriced, hope they manage to pull through. So many jobs at risk

BT SmartHub = Broadband Modem + Router + Ethernet switch + Wireless.

TP-Link Archer = Router + Ethernet switch + Wireless.
I used to shop in their first ever branch in Westcliff-on-sea back in the late 90's, early 2000's and the prices at that time were cheap compared to their competitors. For example printer cables and connectors were barely much more expensive than eBay ones at that time. The problem with Maplin started when they expanded and grew as a business and started copying pricing models of Currys, PC World, Comet and Dixons (Many brands of which are now dead).

The protection is for over £100. For things under £100 you can only request a chargeback which won’t be very effective when the company no longer exists.

TP-Link would have to honour the warranty in that instance I believe.
Problem with Maplin is they got on the overpriced cables train. When you see £16 cables which are sold on eBay for £2 delivered you can see why they didn't survive. As for this router you will be fine with the TP link warranty. You just won't be able to do a 14 day return.
Way over priced as are many high street retailers, I used to enjoy going in to Tandy,s but again another one that went down the pan. As time goes on there will be more that go under, gone are the days when the consumer has to be ripped off just to pay for several staff to stand around most of the day doing little or nothing.
Just sack managers, team leaders , and area manager, company will survive, these are the big elephants and laziest creatures who are overpaid and underperform which makes company to go down and price factors is 2nd thing
UK based company losing more in terms of managers huge salary.
Edited by: "RealGeek" 28th Feb
Biggest example is Tesco, a full time labour employee can earn around 16K a year in Tesco express while a duty managers doing least but paid 35K in shake of responsibility and store managers in Express store which is size of 2 bedroom house earn 40K or more.

I recently took a job in retail after working in engineering all of my life, I was totally shocked when I saw how many lead sales, team leaders and mangers they had in just one store. I would say it was obscene there where a total of ten in charge of one store, having worked in a skilled environment all of my life and then to see this was an eye opener like no other, I have never seen so many unskilled managers and would be managers in one place, no wonder these places go down the pan
I had this router, performance wasn’t great and WiFi reception was problematic. Replaced it after 6 months and haven’t looked back.
Maplin? Had to get my Crocodile clips from Halfords! Good riddance to them. (I'm sorry for the employees)

Can't disagree but at the same time you can't run a high street shop selling £3 cables unless you're selling hundreds of thousands a week.

What did you get to replace it?
Maplin has been a retailer waiting for bankruptcy for a while now.

The writing has been there on the wall.

Overheads of having retail space does contribute to some degree towards higher costs but theirs did seem to be extraordinarily high for most stock and seemed out of touch with everything else around them.

We are gradually moving towards just a few online retailers, Amazon being in prime position to have the lions share and it will be detrimental to consumer and employee prospects but I guess we won't be able to complain because right now we get a good deal and don't care what it has taken to be made at a price that we want to pay.

I think the individual item has to be over £100 unfortunately

There is still Tandy online. I bought some Microchip mpus.
Maplin have been overpriced for years. I can't even remember the last time I went into one of their stores.
Not a miss, would rather shop from ebay, Amazon or other online stores.
Says it all:
Maplin collapses. Received clean bill of health from KPMG on 24 Nov 2017, no red flags, £109k fee; Directors pay £1.871 Million inc. bonus of £484k (for doing what?).
Toys R Us had, "Fallen foul of a perfect storm hitting lego bricks-and-mortar retailers across the board."
Now priced at £179.99
That didn't last long!!

I replaced it with an Apple AirPort Extreme from Cex. It's been rock solid from the day I've installed. WiFi coverage and speed is excellent. Very limited configuration options but just sits in the corner and works. No reboots, no dropping connections. Incredibly well engineered.

This was my speed test results this morning a room away from the router, I'm on a 200Mbps BT Infinity 3 connection.

Maplin went bust because it was took over by a company who borrowed money to buy the company then added this debt to Maplins books once the purchase had gone through. They then charged Maplin high interest rates on the debt, think it 17%.

Watch GKN go the same way. System is broken
