Been looking for a few days for a new router and this is the best price I've found for this particular model - (seems decent but I'm happy to be proved wrong!)

1st Time poster so apologies for any inaccuracies

Well reviewed on smallnetbuilder maybe less supported by 3rd party firmware like asus or netgear.
Any reason for the cold votes peeps? Im on the look out for a new router.
I'd like to know why cold too, as I've just bought it

I did a bit of researching and it seems to be fairly well reviewed, but its hard to tell if it will fit your circumstances until you try it out I guess.
I'm just sick of my Virgin Superhub and its constant drop-outs, plus Virgin refused to send a new Router (unless I wanted to pay 50 quid).
At this price (was about £74 on Amazon just a few days ago I believe) and with Amazon's good return policy I thought it was worth a punt.

Wasn't sure whether to go with this or the Archer C9 but at almost £35 cheaper I wasn't sure if the differences would be worth it. Happy to be educated on the matter though!

Here you go c9 vs c8:

smallnetbuilder.com/wir…wed
Cons out weigh the pros for me :

Pros
Solid price/performance ratio
Dual USB ports (one USB 3.0)
Attractive industrial design
Cons
Finished last in 5GHz 802.11ac performance
Very poor range as a 2.4GHz 802.11n router
WPS button also functions as hardware reset

Thanks Adrian7
Had a quick look there and seem happy enough that the c8 will be fine for all I Need it for, has to be better than the Superhub anyway!

cheers
This is my current one and im having trouble with Wi-fi range : amazon.co.uk/TP-…ter

Thought this might be a nice upgrade but im not so sure now

Are you talking about the C8 or C9? For its class (ac1750) it seems to do ok based on that link Adrian7 gave out?

Sorry I am not that technical on these matters and have been banging my head looking at various router reviews for about a week! , Just want one that is reliably stable (with a few devices connected) and will stream HD content without issue
ya but that review shouldn't be comparing performance of this router to those that are x2 its price. When I researched this router, its wireless performance is on par with top ranked routers at its pricepoint and that's why I bought it, i won't get a chance to use it for another few weeks so i can't comment on its performance.
Its either asus n56u or this at this price. and i chose a newer tech rather than 802.11n

Its the range issue that puts me off, thats the only reason i "need" to upgrade. I might take a gamble anyways.

We turned off the ac on ours and it looks as though it increased the n range.

They are not really 2x the price, until this deal it was 80 while netgear was about 110 though now is more - i got mine from amazon Germany for 95. Linksys is also cheap.
Both can now run modified cfe + merlinwrt which imho is worth a little more - it's not just about performance. You can oc, tweak power, run vpn server, scripts etc etc.
Order worth a test I reckon
I bought the Asus N66u yesterday as I was fed up with drop outs on Virgin Superhub. Works like a dream.... wireless speed increase 40mbps to 107mbps. Streams HD from WD my cloud to daughters Smart Tv without any issues at all. £84 was best price I could find....Amazon/Currys/Pcworld
Just got home, set Virgin Superhub to modem mode, plugged this in and seems to be up and running in no time at all .

Time will tell of course but pleased with it so far, range around the house is much better than before and its great to get some devices on their own 5g channel.
looks quite nice too.

Just bought one myself thanks to all the good reviews when compared with the asus and netgears that cost 2-3x the price, and the 2.4 performance is meant to be good as well. Can return it if it isn't up to scratch. Odd that this is rated cold though, seems like the best ac router deal around.

Yeah I'm no expert but found it odd that this went cold where the older non ac asus RT-N66U went hot and it is more expensive...
Made me wonder if I made the wrong choice but Im happy with its performance so far and My partner is pleased as It looks a lot nicer on our windowsill
So far so good here too. Coverage definitely better than my old router. Speeds are up too.

im no expert either, however, after reading numerous reviews I found that I couldn't find a bad review on the Asus Rt- n66u. so thats how I reached my decision to buy. I am fortunate enough to be able to be able to invest a few more ££ , although I dont deny that this router may also be good

All I can think is that people don't know about ac and are voting on a brand name they have heard of. Either way good to hear yours is performing well, looking forward to mine!
