That is a legitimate concern for some people, including myself, but as far as I've been able to look into it, it only applies to some of the newer devices that have tp-link homeshield.
The devices like the deco x90, x68 and x56.

It's not just them, they just got caught
My BT discs did it too, as did a Wavlink router that I have

If the ones the tested are doing it I'd assume any recent firmware update to any system applied this

A lot to be said for 3rd party firmware imo.

The mesh WiFi systems are better options. Go for less expensive ones if you find these pricey. Tenda Nova mesh WiFi systems are cheaper and good alternatives.

I've got WiFi Powerline Adapters (TL-WPA8630P) and they are great. They are like your conventional powerline adapter but throw out a WiFi signal aswell, eliminating dead spots in the process. I would highly recommend them if your electrical wiring is all on the same circuit board, . There's tons of configuration via the app too

The powerline versions use powerline as a backhaul, rather than using Decos with no backhaul or Ethernet backhaul. Should be most use when dealing with thick and/or Wi-Fi-shielding walls.
** As ever, powerline performance may depend on your house wiring!
Note that they operate in their own fashion and do not interoperate with other powerline devices!
All Decos can interoperate with all other Decos, and regardless of whether a specific device is using a backhaul.
My m5 Decos on Virgin 100 have been fabulously boring. They just work.
Good deal, but the M4 deal for a fiver less is even better.
