£30 elsewhere

A great ADSL2 modem router, I had one and it was an improvement over a Netgear DG834 and Technicolour modems. Also can be used for BT fibre modem as this has an EWAN socket and I used it for Plusnet fibre until I recently got an all in one TP W9980 modem.

3 Year warranty is good, mine went bad after 2 years and they swapped it for a new one, I had to pay return postage costs which was about £3.50.

Release the Geese!;)

Ridiculously cheap! Have some heat to counter the Geese.

Bought the 8980 from Argos a few months back but since moved and have Virgin 50mb... anyone know if 8980 can be used with Cable and if its bettee than their superhub? Might need to sell it if not... still sealed but Argos no longer sell it.

Sorry for going off topic.

Picked up the last one in Tesco Basildon today at £7.25

Theres 4 in my local Tesco, but showing as £30, maybe they will be reduced. Are these better than the Plusnet Speedtouch routers? Mines a few years old now

A million times yes, bought one of these for work to replace a Bt business hub which needed restarting every couple of days. Line speed went up a mb and solid! Have a tp link 8 port switch with it and powers 7 cabled and 3 wireless pc's and a guest network for customers. We paid £29.99 and I thought that was a bargin

Plusnet router lasted a week at home before replacing it. One of the worst isp routers I've ever used

Is this sort of thing any good for changing dns. Currently using supplied bt home hub 3 with fibre

you can change DNS servers on your PC / most network devices directly. Id be surprised if you couldn't change it on the home hub also?

8980 has an ewan port so change that to dynamic (under settings on the router), change the virgin hub to modem only mode and link them up with a cat5 cable, done

Whoops, was meant to quote pops1975

Would you be willing to buy one and post it if I cover the cost of postage, as there are none available in my local store

had them in congleton store too.

Are these one of the TP Link routers that dont support DLNA? Im sure I had to return one of these because it was missing that basic feature. Im sure its discussed on TP Links own forums. A good buy if you dont need that feature.

Tp link 9980 is a very good router.

seems like there are plenty around at this price

It supports DNLA but it's a bit mad on which files it recognises as what type of media on any attached USB hard drive. However, the Samba/Windows sharing of attached hard drives is really great.

Cheers Soton26 - appreciate the tip.

Have had this same one for 2 yesrs with plus net BB very good condistency.. Just signed for fibre this morning... See other post on renegotiated plus net contracts.... I asked whether I needed the pnet fibre router, so grateful to spannerzone for confirming this. Great price, I paid over £50.

Don't suppose it has gigabit Ethernet ports?

Nope. 10/100 only.

Just remember you lose 1 port when using this with the BT openreach Fibre modem, but otherwise it worked perfectly for me and much better than the plusnet supplied router. BUT you may want to get the 'free' router from Plusnet so if you get a problem, you can plug it in to check the connection and to prove to Plusnet it's not because you're using a 3rd party router (ie tech support might not initially be sohelpful if you're not using their supplied modem)

As a comparison, I've recenty bought the TP Link W9980 all in one ADSL/VDSL modem router and the performance is about the same, in fact the wifi may be ever so slightly better on the W8968.

Is there any way to check if my nearest store has one without actually going there?

Yes check the Tesco direct website for the order details for this modem, ring up your local Tesco and ask them to check if its in stock.

Thanks karl, I'll check my local, seems like a pretty good replacement for the Sky 102 box.

Found one in a local store today. Had it scanned by a CS bod:- still shows as £30.

Tried my local Tesco (Dudley, Burnt Tree Island) last night. They were aware of the HUKD post and said that they had had a lot of people coming in for it but they had no news of a pending price reduction. Really disappointed as I wanted a cheap replacement for my rubbish Plusnet modem. Still voting hot as its a great deal if you can get it.

Im the same i want a replacement for my Technicolour Plusnet modem.
