Was looking at this switch for a while since I'm interested in making a home media hub for my room. Just saw that Amazon have removed their investigation message and it's selling as part of the PC Gaming offer that they have running right now.

Bought one yesterday since it looks to be a good quality switch for the money and couldn't see it was on HUKD yet so thought I'd share it.

Product Description
TP Link's 8-Port Gigabit desktop switch provides you an easy way to make the transition to Gigabit Ethernet, increase the speed of your network server and backbone connections, or make Gigabit to the desktop a reality. With a low power consumption design and innovative energy-efficient technology, the TL-SG1008D can save up to 80% of power consumption, making it an eco-friendly solution for your home or office network. With 8 10/100/1000 Mbps ports, the TL-SG1008D greatly expands your network capacity, enabling instant large files transferring, and letting power users move large, bandwidth-intensive files faster.

This new generation switch features the latest innovative energy-efficient technologies that can greatly expand your network capacity with much less power. It automatically adjusts power consumption according to the link status and cable length to limit the carbon footprint of your network. When a computer or network equipment is off, the corresponding port of a traditional switch will continue to consume considerable amounts of power. The TL-SG1008D automatically detects the link status of each port and reduces the power consumption of ports that are idle, resulting in an up to 80% reduction in power use.

The built-in auto features of this switch make installation plug and play and hassle-free. Features include Auto MDI/MDIX (which eliminates the need for crossover cables) and Auto-negotiation, which senses the link speed of a network device and intelligently adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance.

What is meant by 'unmanaged?' I assume there is a 'managed' version also?

Managed means you can configure the switch to your needs to prioritise traffic and network status etc, which benefits medium to large businesses with SLAs to follow for example. Because of all of the added benefits they carry a large price premium, however for home networks and small businesses they're not needed.

Unmanaged switches are just plug and play and do all of the thinking for you with no way of configuring besides plugging it in. As in the last paragraph there's no real need for anything beyond this in a small network as the unmanaged switch does what you expect it do; transmit data to whatever is plugged into it.

This site seems to explain it pretty well:…ch/
It's a good price: lowest thus far
