Chiltern Railways, which not a huge number of people will know about offer direct trains between Birmingham Moor Street and London Marylebone stations... The train journey is a little longer than Virgin Trains (with the fastest journeys around 94 minutes), however they compete on price and service, with newly refurbished trains and a special business zone. There are two trains an hour, one of which is faster than the other.

They promote the London to Birmingham service as "Chiltern Mainline", with free WiFi and space at each seat to use a laptop. You can also upgrade to the Business/Quiet Zone for £10 which gives you larger seats, complimentary hot drinks and a train host.
Here's some info:

About two months ago there was an incident on the rail route, where a land slide occurred and blocked the line between both cities for about 6 weeks and caused a lot of travel inconvenience with replacement buses on the route. This is all now cleared and Chiltern Railways are trying to attract travellers from the midlands back to the route, by offering discounted rail tickets.

Basically for the month of April when you travel to London, you will not pay more than a ticket from Banbury to London. This applies to all walk on fares (where you turn up on the day and buy your ticket to travel) and the discount should be offered automatically at the ticket office.

For example:
- A peak day return is reduced from £99 to £74.80
- An off-peak day return is reduced from £50 to £39.50. (Arriving into London after 10am)
Remember you are not restricted to travelling on a a specific train, like usual discounted train tickets and if you have a railcard you can also benefit from the savings that offers too, on the ticket.

When you consider a peak return in standard class on Virgin Trains is £168, where is some big savings to be had!

The saving don't stop there, and this is where the big money savings kick in! If you are a regular traveller on the route, you can purchase season tickets before the end of April and lock in this deal for the validity of the season ticket (up to a year!) you purchase.

For example:
Birmingham Moor Street and Solihull to London:
- Weekly Season Ticket - Usually £228.50 reduced to £135.30
- Monthly Season Ticket - Usually £755.40 reduced to £519.60
- Annual Season Ticket - Usually £7868 reduced to £5412
Remember the ticket must start on or before the 30th April, but is valid for the period of the ticket at this price.

Hope this helps a few people.

There is an hourly direct service from Coventry to Southampton, operated by Cross Country Trains, it takes around 2hrs 15mins!

I suggest you look on their website, to check the trains for the day you are travelling... If you're travelling in a couple of weeks you might be able to get quite a cheap ticket, if you book in-advance and happy to travel on a specific train. (If you miss it, you have to pay for a new ticket!) You should allow yourself some breathing space if the trains are delayed, as these are long distance trains and delays happen quite frequently.

Not to mention the cheap Chiltern advance tickets leaving late morning and returning late evening. £12 return Birmingham to/from London.

Ohhh well, thats just the way the cookie crumbles...
The train company that operates to Southampton is completely unrelated to this thread. If you want you can private message me your dates and times and I'll have a look, but I have no special access to fares that you would be unable to see.
Try National Express.
