I know this will probably go cold because a) it's quite an expensive product and people will inevitably go for the "why don't you just buy normal headphones for [x price]" angle, b) people will probably end up saying how much better Astros are or c) just because it's The Hut...

But for people in the market for a mid-level gaming headset, I've been sweeping reviews for the last couple of days and this one seems spot on!

If voting cold, please do let me know where it's cheaper.

Seems good to me, thanks!

I'm interested to see how this deal pans out (interested in a pair myself).

Was tempted by the Blackops branded version which was available for around £70 but they've ramped them up to £100 now.

How do these compare to the AX Pro?

Original Poster

I did a massive search on that yesterday, and it seems to be 50/50 in people's preference between the 720s and Pros despite the Pros being more expensive. You'll get snotty audiophiles saying how much better the real 5.1 of the Pros is in comparison to the simulated 5.1 in the 720s but other people seem to say there's not much difference! If you want to spend a little more and get a little more out of it go for the Pros but if you don't think you'll notice much of a difference go for the 720s.

Seriously, people voting cold - where are they cheaper? I would genuinely love to know so I can get a better deal on them!

Tempted by these but the turtle X41s or DPX21s with the DSS seem good as well... Hmm choices choices.. Heat added..

I was initially looking at Turtle Beach, but just saw so many people complaining about the build quality and how many times they've had to replace them that it put me right off!

Probably right!

Personally i think that turtle beach x41s are far better.

are the x41's for the xbox only? i'm looking for a PS3 set

no service or support from manufacturer so why buy? lucky to get 1 year at 2 pound a week or so?

why would anyone think this is a hot deal, so stop moaning about temp I think. Real bargains often get no heat and this ain't one.

It comes with a 12 month warranty. Why is this not a hot deal when it's the cheapest price for this available product?

Buy a good pair of headphones and use them with the DSS or spend more and get the Astro mixamp. I bought the Trittons (AX Pro) and took them back, the sound quality is terrible compared to what I now use - Astro mixamp + Sennheisser HD595.

^This, buy a seperate amp and then a decent set of headphone's or a PC headset. The sound quality will be miles better and that way you can use them on any console, pc etc.

isn't that about twice the price though?

Will this code work for the pros as well? I can't decide between the two.

Yes, it's a site-wide code - £8 off when you spend over £80

Nevermind, think I'm gonna pop for the 720's. Nice find, saved me a good few quid. Heat added.

unless im wrong the option of going with a DSS leave you no flexibility in connecting a headset with a mic unless that headset is one of the few Turtle beach stereo headsets it would work with

unless i am wrong the ASTRO mix amp and the Tritton 720 Decoder this would come with are built on the same components... this is £10 less and can perform the same thing as the Astro mixamp but it is cheaper and you get a decent enough headset to go with it

from the looks of things i would sell the headset, and keep all the cabling that comes with the 720 amp, and then you would be able to plug another headset into the headphone and mic slots that are present on the connector cable that come with this deal

i honestly want to know how the mixamp is better? i can get the 720 headset & all cables for cheaper than jsut the mixamp with no cables... why should i go for the mixamp?

genuine question would appreciate a reply from anybody more in the know

cheers,

joe

Ear force DSS connects with one 3.5mm jack

Sharkoon SCu connects throug ha 9 pin

tritton requires a tritton adapter cable... has a 4 pin plug

Astro mixamp connects through a 3.5mm

It's all about sound quality... I'd rather use a £20.00 pair of Koss Portapros than the Trittons - the sound is awful.

The YouTube video shows how a Mixamp is setup to use any headphones you like (important as it's all subjective) with a seperate mic... the game sounds and voice communication can be mixed via a single dial to make it much easier to distinguish chat amongst all the explosions.

This isn't definitive, it's just my opinion (as I said, it's subjective) based on experience of both options and the extensive research I did before buying the Mixamp. I couldn't be happier with it and have stopped looking for anything better.

THIS IS HOT!!!
Best price for a great headset!!!

I think it's a case of what people can afford / are willing to pay for something like this. I'm sure the mixamp setups are miles better but I think the mixamps cost about the same as this headset on their own, don't they? I'm by no means knowledgeable on this subject, so I could be wrong.

mix amp is £99 for the standard model without any cables, it has the same level of processing as everythign i mentioned above, think the Tritton decoder maybe a touch more powerful actually...

think its about connectivity though, the mixamp can take anything, from all my research the rest of them certainly cannot....

the Ear Force DSS seems the best value, £40, comes with all cables included from ebay... need a headset to run on that bad boy... and then your selection becomes a bit thinner

incidently the ax720 are pretty universally regarded as superior to the AX Pro's

ax pros have 4 smaller drivers, the 720's run simulated through 1 bigger, essentially better quality driver.. worth knowing

im in a predicament where anythign i use will make the audio quality far superior to what i currently have, i want to be able to have skype and PS3 running at the same time though, pretty sure the mix amp can handle it... might jsut ask for one for crimbo

Original Poster

Aye, I think if you're looking for something cross platform, a bit more of an investment may be worth it. I know I'm only ever going to be using these with the Xbox, so it's great for me, and I'm no audiophile so I'm not fussed if it's not the most amazing thing I will ever have delivered into my earholes.

I've hopefully helped a few people by posting this anyway, and that's what matters

how does it compare to these?

Joeprosho

The mixamp comes with many cables, I replaced the optical cable based on advice of other owners.

If you want it for PS3 and skype it really is perfect. I use it to play games on my laptop whilst running football commentary through it from my Xbox.

on the astro website, you select the mixamp, then you can add each individual cable at a cost from what i can see..

I had all the cables I needed in the box when I bought mine, even one for connecting the Xbox headset.
