If you wish to create your own wi-fi hotspot AND if you already have a connection to the internet AND if you have a laptop running Windows 7 (not sure if it works with other versions of Windows) - Then you may be interested in "Virtual Router" which is a FREE download (http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com) and turns your laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot. I am using it and it works really well. If you want to know more about this it was featured in issue 359 of "Computeractive magazine" (Page 42).

Or download Connectify which is also a free download.

Could some kind soul please explain exactly what a Wifi Hotspot it?
My Laptop complies to all of above - we run another laptop in the house on Wifi plus my Ipod, so could we benefit from this? Wifi is sketchy to non-existent in my bedroom so if I want to use my Ipod in bed I can't and the laptop connection is this great so i'm wondering if this would help?
Thanks.

It means your laptop would become the access point for the internet, so a wifi enabled device (like your phone or tablet) can access the internet via your laptop.

Do not use an Ipod in bed they can be dangerous oO - there are plenty of products available that are designed specifically for that purpose

Ok - so am I right in thinking that if I downloaded this onto my Laptop it could improve the WiFi around the house? I think the problem is that the LiveBox is located in a room toward the back of the house and my bedroom is at the front, whereas my laptop is usually switched on and in the living room (at the front of the house). Am I making sense?

Can someone explain the benefits of this please?

If you already have wifi, then your router is a hotspot as it is surely?

I can only assume that this would benefit those who connect via ethernet cable and want to set up a wifi network via their laptop.

any idea what this means?
"Support for Windows XP and Vista – Ad-Hoc Mode only"

Martin

Ad-Hoc mode is limited in speed and security compared with running a "proper" 802.11n access point with WPA2 encryption.

A lot hotels still only offer internet access with cable plug, so it is very useful.

I dont know anything about virtual routers just thought your requirements were amusing - I've had a quick look at These Reviews and it looks like some people have had success using laptops as wifi network hosts but others couldn't get it working at all. Look at FAQ's here
there's been over 690,000 downloads and over 200 people are following the project so there should be plenty of help or info from those users - dont forget to make a restore point before you download it - good luck

Why would i use this ? only helpful for those who dont have wifi router !!

I live in a big old farmhouse and can just about pick up the wireless router signal at the other end of the house but the ipad struggles to pick up the connection. Is there any software that will then treat the laptop as another router (connected wirelessly) and the ipad can connect to the nearby laptop signal ? This stuff just replaces the need for a router I think ?!

In answer to your question, I think this would work for you - this is from Virtual Router web page:
"What is Virtual Router?
Virtual Router is a free, open source software based router for PCs running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Using Virtual Router, users can wirelessly share any internet connection (Wifi, LAN, Cable Modem, Dial-up, Cellular, etc.) with any Wifi device (Laptop, Smart Phone, iPod Touch, iPhone, Android Phone, Zune, Netbook, wireless printer, etc.) These devices connect to Virtual Router just like any other access point, and the connection is completely secured using WPA2 (the most secure wireless encryption.)"

Yes you can install this on any PC which has an internet connection and it will create a new Wireless Access Point which your netbook can connect to.
