Cheapest I've found Android 6 TV box, can run all the usual apps, 4k resolution playback, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Kodi, etc. Only thing I'd upgrade is the hdmi cable, for better 4k playback.

There are no Android boxes outside of the Nvidia Shield and potentially the Xiaomi MiBox that have proper DRM licensing.. So you wont be getting anything like 4K out of netflix on this thing.

Don't waste your money.. Just buy a proper, capable box.

Also, no need to censor "Kodi".. there's nothing illegal about it. Yes, you can use it to watch illegal streams.. but you can use an iPhone, a Windows Computer or a Amazon Fire Tablet.. so you may aswell sensor out those as well while you're at it.

And the last thing.. Upgrade the HDMI cable? Wtf.. do you work for PCWorld?.. don't spend more the £2 on an HDMI cable. There is ABSOLUTELY no need.

Edit : No need to upgrade the HDMI cable unless it's a flimsy piece of mess.. and if you do, there's no need to buy anything other than an Amazon Basics.

Technically not entirely true. Shielding, cross talk etc all effect a digital signal and higher quality (higher quality != expensive) will be better than cheaper cables - this is more apparent the longer the cable is.
Disagree that these boxes are trash, my android box is working fine!

Yeah i agree.. and i apologise for that.. I'll edit the post.. It's just these boxes get peddled all the time as these wonder devices and in truth, they are trash and cheap for a reason.
To put the cable myth into perspective, Manufacturers will be right that the high end cable will be better depending on the cable however that doesn't mean that the components used on your TV for example the HDMI port or the HDMI port on the box will be of a high end quality so changing and using a high profile expensive cable will hardly make any difference whatsoever. If you can afford to buy the high end TV such as Bang and Olufsen then it's worth using expensive cables, but even in that situation they would be coming to install it for you and using there own cables. Don't waste money on cables if it works don't change it.
Spend as much as you want on an HDMI cable...if it's your own money spend it to please yourself.

Great price for a 2GB/16GB S905x box with 10bit support supplied ex-UK, plus benefit of Amazon fulfillment.

Work just fine for me.
Anyone own? How good is the remote? I sometimes find the IR on the remotes on this "cheap" stuff quite bad.
Advice welcome - What's the equivalent Android 7.1 3GB or 4GB ??

(I'm getting an Amazon Fire TV 4k for myself, but wanted to get something cheaper and simpler for my elderly parents.)
this is the android 6 version I would get android 7 version, a bit of future protection

Possible lack of future vision (sic). An A7 version with similar spec fulfilled Amazon will be nearer twice the cost, although I suppose you could argue an A7 version may attract a higher resale cost when you sell the A7 version to buy an A8 version at three times the cost...
Summary: current £25.99 option with Android 6 is the real deal at this point in time in Jan 2018.
How many usb ports does it have? I have 2 portable drives I want to view files from
I've been thinking about getting an android box for ages but whenever one comes on here at a good price people talk about problems with the power supply, or the user interface, or overheating, or you should get the 905 but not the 905s or something else and I end up not getting one cos I haven't got a clue

The quality of signal from an HDMI lead works or it doesn’t. You will see when it is compromised by having white dots on the screen. There is no better picture quality from a £1 cable to a £200 cable. Hiwever, the longer the cable the more likely cheaper ones will fail (not reduce quality). The cheaper cables will have lower quality connections which only means that if you take the cable in and out if the socket it is more likely to break. If you are hiding cables in walls etc, then to prevent risk of connection failure you may want to pay a little more.
The quality of the picture will come from the sending device and the receiving device not the cable.
Loads of tests have shown that the cable has no bearing on this. It is digital. It is a 1 or a 0. The same 1 or 0 will be sent and received whatever the cable price unless it is damaged or the connection is faulty - when you will clearly see the white dots.

Pay what you want, but it’s best to be informed for when sales consultants try and sell you something you don’t need.
Decent deal on the box by the way.

Incorrect. The M8S PRO+ and M8S PRO L boxes contain Widevine level 1 certification AKA Netflix 4K and YouTube 4k... possibly more.

Both with flashable Android TV ROMS...

Stick that up your dojo.

Total 2 x USB, however two mechanical drives with no external PSUs may stress the box PSU if both drives are connected at any one time.

No way! Firestick underpowered in comparison and costs more!

Ever tried to use a Firestick to access media from a USB stick or portable hard drive, or use with a mouse / keyboard / gamepad? Usually requires a split power cable + OTG cable + external hub, and likely an external power supply to ensure reliable hard drive function, which all equates to far too much faff for the typical user. Firestick excels at compact form factor and anything that doesn't require too much performance, otherwise it is just too inflexible. Users' expectations and application(s) will dictate preference of hardware of course and is respected. "Safe to use"? Lol, that requires some additional clarification.

Lol someone has been buying into the scaremongering going on to stop people buying these to run certain apps. Hope your very happy with your firestick as it’s probally made in the same factory in China anyway. Feel how HOT the firestick gets while in operation these are known for overheating...

Yes but a pound land cable is made cheaply, so the cables may come loose or short or the connectors break. Since you may be plugging the HDMI cable into a 1000 pound TV, you don't want to fry the HDMI board just to save a couple of quid.

You are sending signal thru the hdmi, not 1000 watts. So don't worry about destroying the tv, if you paid 1000 for it, it should have have some kind of pretection.

Nah, that alternative uses an inferior and generally less-supported chipset. If circa £30 is budget for must-buy-box-today consider £1.35 more for lightning deal ending circa midday Sat 13 Jan 2018 for similar chipset as OP running A7.1 amazon.co.uk/Sma…7X/
any ideas why the audio is not working straight out of the box? what about firmware updates?
If I email you an image using poor quality cabling in my house. Will the image be poor quality when you receive it and open it? No.

If the email arrives in your mailbox, the quality of the photo will remain in its original state.

If my cables in my house are that bad, you simply won’t receive the email.

This is how HDMI works, you’re not sending a stream of video down the cable, there are no varying qualities.

HDMI is sending DATA down the cable, so if it arrives at your telly, it will be presented in its original state. If the cable is really bad, it simply won’t reach the TV at all.
Lol at the cable assumptions, pass the popcorn ?

Can a more practical note, can anyone tell me if these boxes have TUN.KO module built in and any newer ROMs available with it built in for enablng VPN and what are they like to flash ?
Is flashing fairly straighforward to manage, i.e are there any reset switches for enabling Maskrom/flash does anyone know?
On my old 903 device you had to short pins 8 and 9, possible but fiddly.

Looks like no built in SD, my old stick had a built in microSD which would be handy as I now have an unused 32Gb so might not be the one for me.
