What are these like compared to fire tv?

There's many many different brands, they are cheap for a reason. The software is the worst thing about these boxes, won't update, many bugs, can't access some menus in apps without difficulty. The remote you get with these is virtually useless. You need a combined keyboard mouse to use it properly. If you get past that then they function pretty well as streaming devices. I have a few of these boxes and well no actually I lie I've given them away to friends, and for free they were very happy with them. I thought I still had one left but I don't. An Nvidia Shield TV wipes the floor with them but it costs 5x the price if not more.

The issue with Amazon devices is the lack of YouTube support because Amazon and Google had a little scrap and couldn't get along with each other. So you need to use Firefox or Silk browser to view YouTube.

The chipset in this box is S905W and it's a cut down S905X considering the S905X has been out quite a while now over a year you're actually now getting less for your money than before.

My advice is if you really want a cheap Chinese bodged software experience, then at least make sure there's ROM support, so find a box that has ROM support on the forum freaktab.com. If you can't do that (maybe learn to read, because everything you need is on that forum!) then install Aptoide so you can easily get apps and update them and also install Nova Launcher because the launchers that come with these devices are insanely poor.

£30 absolutely gets you what you'd expect. That's my experience. These boxes work and you can browse the web easily etc and stream just the overall software experience is extremely poor.

Yes, Kodi is dead, No Limits Magic build doesn't give you access to pretty much every single movie and tv show ever made. Completely dead. Nothing to see here

Looks like a Decepticon.

I have an older Android Box with the same spec however. Nexbox 905X. It also claimed to support .265 however playback is quite laggy, especially if files are coded at high bitrates.

I don’t understand what you mean are these better or worse?
S905W, the lowest of the AmLogic chipsets.

Expensive compared to where else you can buy it but with it coming from Amazon, will have any import charges already applied.

Not a known name in the Android world, so support may be very limited.
I'll ask a similar question.
I have a local library. Some files have DTS soundtracks. As I understand it, android based systems cannot passthrough DTS and only Dolby.

Are there other oddities like this that we should be aware of?
Looks alright but the last box I bought on amazon looked alright and it’s ****. It keeps crashing and freezing. If you want a good device get a amazon tv gen 2 for like £50 -£60 or a Nvidia shield, but that’s breaking the bank £150.

No, not dead. Some of the channels went away. And then there's Showbox et al . . .
Plus, they turn your TV into a smart TV.

Kodi isn't dead infact its even expanded over to xbox one now. With an android box you could do a variety of things similar to most android devices ranging from surfing the web to playing games on apps.
will do the job for stb emulator and iptv

Try showbox too while you're at it.

Kodi isn't dead maybe some or many of the addons are. However people use Android .apks now. They work much quicker than Kodi addons.
I think this is a pretty standard price for a 2GB, 16GB 905 box. I got my parent the H96 pro plus with S912, 3GB, 32GB for £45 a few months ago and I think that's a better buy really,

Ditto
You can get a box with the same RAM and storage but with dual band WiFi, bluetooth and the better S905X SOC with full 4K for the same price and because it's in a EU warehouse, no import charges.

Is that considered a decent mid-spec box? I'm looking for something to replace a rather old WD TV Live media player. Would be looking for something that could handle pretty much any video file played from local storage or network.

And I've never tried using Kodi but might take a look at that option you said didn't work *ahem*. If that box is what you'd recommend, where did you get it from?

It is kind of an upper mid range box I would say. Got it from eBay from a UK seller. 3GB is the one to go for with either 16 or 32GB of storage. There were a few deals on here for them and I followed someone's instructions on how to update them (you need a male to male usb cable) and it literally takes 5-10 minutes to add what you need to Kodi to make it an amazing little box.

I have two wdtv live boxes still also, because they can play everything including master audio at 7.1 and they just work 100% of the time. Can't believe they play what they play considering the specs. Makes you wonder why they stopped making the boxes because to get so much out of terrible specs is no easy task.

I'm in the same boat with 3 x WDTV live boxes. They've provided stellar service over the years with streaming fron Netgear NAS's over ethernet cable .m2ts uncompressed bluray rips with HD Master or True HD audio track into a 7.2 amp

I don't really know what the direction is from here. I haven't gone 4k tv/amp yet but will be doing eventually, so want something like the WD that will easily deal with uncompressed UHD bluray rips using h.265 (.m2ts or .mkv container) many which have Atmos 7.1 as the best audio stream.....again streaming them from Netgear NAS's/HP Microserver over ethernet

Any thoughts?

I have the same box (s905x not s905w). Plays 4k 10 bit x265 without breaking a sweat. I've played the 4k 10bit 120Mbps samples from jell.yfish.us without issue at all. Just use libreelec instead.

There are crazy expensive boxes around which will do what you need, but I think an android box is the only cheaper alternative. The wdtv live boxes are 8 years old, have a single core processor which runs at 0.5Ghz, 512mb of ram and 256mb of rom. Reason why it's so good is because it has a coprocessor and another processor for digital audio.

DTS required license payment to decode, nothing as far as I'm aware to passthrough.

It may be on the Xbox but it doesn't fully work like it does on other devices owning to certain MS conditions.
