Why choose Lycamobile 4G?
Data allowances in all our bundles, as well as Pay as You go data can be used at 4G speed at no additional cost. It is built specifically to handle mobile internet and data more efficiently, allowing faster and more reliable mobile connectivity in a world where data usage is increasing 250% year on year.

What 4G can do that 3G can't
Because 4G is so much faster and stronger than a normal 3G signal, it means you can do things with 4G that just aren't possible on 3G. For example, 4G makes it much quicker to surf the web on your Lycamobile. 4G is ideally suited for services which demand more capacity like video streaming, mapping and social networking sites when accessed through your Lycamobile. For the typical Lycamobile user, download speeds of 4G could be around 5-7 times quicker vs. your existing 3G on Lycamobile. This means a music album taking 20 minutes to download on a 3G phone and just over 3 minutes on 4G.

How to enable 4G on your phone
4G/ 4G LTE networks require compatible device. Most of the new smartphones will automatically detect 4G but in some cases you will need manually to enable 4G in your setting menu. There's no need of new SIM card and existing customers will be able to access 4G on their current SIM. Availability and speed may vary in different locations

About Lycamobile

Do they even have it as an optional bolt on?

Just weighing up a new SIM Only deal - currently looking at Vodafone, but this rate seems decent'ish.

Whats their coverage like? Do they piggy back anyone else?

seems to run of O2 for 4G & EE for 3G? - nothing obvious on their website to confirm though.

Their Customer Service sucks all time.

the £15 sim on three is much better value..cold..

Throttle it down?

stay away, took the nearly a month to port over my number, customer services was useless, and then after a month put up the price plan.

I would personally go with 3, lower minutes but good services coverage. If you are downloading a large file/files on p2p, then it will be capped until midnight where I get over 1mb/s

sorry. does three cap your p2p or lycra caps p2p?

three

after midnight on three the cap is lifted and then that is when I get over the 1mb/s.

mainly used because I work night shift and end up downloading while at work.

interesting thanks.

Throttling & Traffic Management

Three has a traffic management policy known as TrafficSense. According to their key facts indicator, P2P file-sharing (e.g. BitTorrent) is slowed down on the network between 3pm and midnight each day. They also use video optimisation (videos are only downloaded at the rate at which you’re able to watch them):

data-binaryWe allocate a fixed amount of network bandwidth to P2P file-sharing activities and to tethering activities at peak times to manage network congestion and provide the best possible experience for the greatest number of users.

We use video optimisation to change the way video content is streamed to your device to make it play better. We use it to improve your streaming experience if our network is busy where you are.

The key factors indicator confirms that your speeds won’t be reduced for using too much data (see the section “Is traffic management used in relation to heavy users?”).
