I have always been on the fence on changing oil using this method ?. Does dropping the oil bolt not removed metal shavings or something ? Hot anyway at that price.

Sump plug is the better option IMO, this method takes forever! I would only do it if I had no other option or if the car has a sump plug that's single use of like my friends car has.

A number of main dealers actually use a similar method...albeit with a larger pump. I’ve used this myself if doing a basic service oil change without the need to jack up car and remove the undertray plastics.
Surely it would just leave all the contaminants in the bottom of the engine.

on some BMW's the plug is in a hard to reach place.
But on these cars you must do a regular oil change. (more than what the manufacturer says)
so I think this would help a lot of people out.

You are right.......According to the specs, it would take 40 minutes to remove the 8 litres in my car.

Flow rate: 0.2L/min (engine oil–max 60ºC)

I meant the pump would be overheating from all the stress

Sorry I did think I worded that badly, you're right it will be toasty, I meant nope it won't be cool after 40 mins at full tilt.

I'm used to dealing with 1ltr cars so 8 ltrs of oil strikes me as insane.

Reliant kitten, driven hard and put away wet.
I used this on my mums Micra last year. It wasn't a great experience as I had to keep moving the pipe to different positions to get a good flow rate. Took about 1.5 hrs in the end!

Interesting comment but can be true of many vehicles but it's quite surprising that drivers who are disrespectful of other drivers in 30mph and 40mph limits in the town and suburbs would appear to drive Audi's, BMW's, Merc's and Range Rovers or some other large or expensive car. Apologies to all you guys who have these and drive sensibly but I must see some nutter tailgating me every day or trying to push in in traffic and I only drive weekdays at peak time. Its like why do you want that 20 foot of space in front of me. It's not like they are going to get anywhere as 20 feet up the road is another car and then another. More often it's an Audi A3 or A4 for some reason. Ford Ka appears in the list too. Seem to be driven by nutters lol. Maybe the type of car you buy does reflect on the sort of person you are depending on your age. Interesting to watch just how fast people some drive in car parks when food shopping. You wouldn't think there were lots of people about struggling to push their trolleys in a straight line.
Flush it out with white spirit afterwards, otherwise it will leak badly.

Mines only a 2 litre oil capacity, so a five litre can does 2 changes and top ups in between, cheap as chips at £16 for 5 litres. She does have a habit of marking her territory, not as bad as when I first got her but the engine type are known for it, no one has solved it 100%. If it isn't leaking somewhere you are out of oil.
