will this thing play avi files from an external hard drive?

the spec doesn't suggest it's a recordable dvd or pvr. if it can record freeview then it's a great deal.

can anyone clarify?

I want to say that if you were to hook up an Ex-HDD to that USB port that you could record to that... but I don't know for sure.

Could we get any clarification from the OP please?

Sorry it's only a player not a recorder.

i can confirm that, having googled it.

at that price it's pretty obvious it isnt a recorder

not really pinkleponkle there was another on her today that was a recorder for that price (allbeit without freeview)

its a great price though for what it is and will save on power sockets and scart connections

i can find very little about this player, does anyone have any experience of it, most importantly can it scale divx movies to full screan? i need a freeview box, and if its a good divx player as well then i may as well retire my xbox, BUT unlike some divx players i need one which can play full screen video not postage stamp windows for some of my lower res stuff.

cheers
M.

The first company to bring out one of these type of machines with a USB 2.0 port is going to do very well. Can't see what is taking everybody so long. Loads of people have external HD's now and would love a machine that they can plug the drive into and playback video without stuttering at 1.1 speeds.

A great idea incorporating a freeview box into these type of machines but I'm going to hold off until the USB 2.0 units start shipping.

Topfield PVR 5800?

It's been out for a while. You can legally mod it, and I think people have started adding Wi-Fi adaptors too.

hm, i might take the plunge. i don't expect i'll get a good freeview signal, but with divx, card reader and usb port it seems like a good deal, seeing as i don't have a standalone cd player... hm...

Does anyone know where you can better images?

Thanks

Adrian

Sorry managed to get them. Did not realize the pictures were being bloccked by the pop up blocker:thinking: .

Adrian

circuit i hope its an ok freeview swignal as its one of the reasons i am getting it !!!! i decided to chance it and take the plunge. Am not expecting the quality of a top of the line freeview box or dvd player but i just hope it doesnt try to much and fail on all counts!.

yeah, i just meant that i don't really get a good freeview signal in my house so i need a very good freeview receiver. maybe i shouldn't bother with this, and get a decent divx/ card reader dvd player instead.

Have you tried an inexpensive digital amp (another alternative) in the socket? Worked wonders for me.

Still not perfect. But 3/4's of the channels now seem to work absolutley fine. Can't complain for the eight quid mine cost me!

You should really look into upgrading the roof aerial if you haven't already had a new digitally optimised variant installed aswell. This would be the bigger issue.

long story but we can't, and we can't get sky, so we now have cable. can't really get freeview anywhere else in the house though. never mind, i think we're destined to only have terrestrial elsewhere in the house.

I have had Yamada / Umax for years. They are a great DVD Players and play anything you put into them. DivX, Xvid, Mpeg3, Mpeg4, Ogg Vorbis, Avi and Wma files to name a few. If you download any films just burn it and put it in this player. I find the drawers which hold the CD are a little flimsy but overall I give it 5*

I'm talking something in the sub £50 divx/xvid capable range - not the Toppy's £250+ price tag.

Couldn't believe that Philips' newest line of cheapos still stuck to the USB 1.1 port after the success they'd had with the 5960. Thought they'd up the ante but they didn't.

Right now I'm happy with and amazed by the xbox I bought after applying a softmod and putting on XBMC and linking it up to my PC - pure televisual and audio jukebox network bliss. And all in for £53. Happy.

Hi, does anyone know if you can play movies off the sd-card or usb port? Also has anyone got one of these? Is it any good? Thanks

It doesn't look like it, they seem to be careful in their wording "supporting playback of music and image files directly from an on-board memory card slot or USB port". 'images' being jpgs and the like I guess. I'm sure they'd mention movies if it was capable.

Can this play region 1 dvds:?:

Voted hot!

Yes it can, it is multi-region out of the box.

Got one myself will get rid of my existing freeview and divx player and free up some space under the TV.

Although i don't have this one i do have a dvd recorder from umax that states the same thing about it's usb port. I have been able to play movies from it's usb port with no problem. Only start to get a bit of stuttering with 5.1 sound, but stereo is fine.

ive ordered one as i was planning on getting a freeview box and this works out to be about only a tenner more than a standalone box. anyone got one yet? a few things i am hoping for...

the off button on the unit switches it off completely - i like to save energy

the lcd shows freeview info, like channel number

epg is seven days

you dont have to wait an eternity for the channel to change over

the reception is no worse than other boxes

if anyone bagged one please let me know the answers! if its all pretty negative i can still cancel my order... thanks.

Can confirm that. The remote could have been better designed and the CD drawer tended to be abit flimsy. Cant comment on the newer models though. But it always played anything I threw at it.

This certainly seems a decent price!

edit: Plenty of ports on the back which is a good sign too!

Not all suppliers who offer the Google Checkout payment service have the £10 off £30 discount.

Yea i see they have to be on the GC merchant list to get it.

Verdict... for the money cracking player.
all none HD divx's i tried bar one played fine (and the one which didnt it tried to play - possible poor disk issue??? ).
It plays full screen (within the limitations of the aspect ratio, but no postages stamp windows).
Sound quality is nice - better than some cheap divx players.
The freeview picked up every channel - unlike my CRAP Alqemi TX tuner - but thats another story (dont buy from evesham!!!!)

Like others have said, the remote is tacky and the disk tray flimsy but other than that its superb. am very chuffed.

Cant help you on the usb am afraid as i dont have my memory stick on me.

you can put it to standby via the remote or you can switch it off fully via the box, the remote is nice and responsive, not sluggish as for the lcd on the front......... i forgot to look sorry, same with the epg (i was busy on my xbox 360 last night and only put aside a limited amout of time on the dvd player!).

mine has just arrived so can answer the questions but there is one problem...
there is no teletext or coloured button for interactive services!?!?

off button on the unit switches it off completely - i like to save energy
lcd shows freeview info, like channel number
epg is seven days
super fast at changing channels
lcd shows freeview info, like channel number PLUS clock which always knows the time when it is off.
the system is very sophisticated compared to my on digital box, greate features like showing you a sized down picture while accessing tv guides, menus. shows you detailed info about everything you could possibly need to know about the channels you are watching.
different present sound can be adjusted and for those who hook it up a hifi or sound system, you can benefit from fewer connections as both dvd and freeview comes from one unit
you can choose between wide or 4:3 AND zoom the picture 2x, 4x etc
there are games
you can even organise channel by type, movies, shows etc - loads of little great features like these...

the tray is flimsy, but on the flip side it also looks kind of elegant to be a slim slot instead of a chunky tray. remote isnt too bad, ive seen worse for budget electronics.

ONLY PROBLEM IS NO BBCi, TELETEXT AND COLOURED BUTTONS !?!?

my mates just asked me a question, and without the instructions to hand i have no idea!!!

do you know if it does modulation/??

He needs it to output the freeview signal out of the RF socket on the back. So he can tune the analogue TV card in his PC to pick it up.
