They were an excellent company until they were bought out, now not so good.

Good deal but you will never tell the difference between 1080p or 720p on that size screen

Nahhh, you've got it all wrong! Think of it as a nice hi-res monitor (where, depending on what you're doing, you can tell the difference), with the added bonus of being able to watch TV and DVDs on it.

Looks like the same one that was on clearance at Tesco recently. I didn't buy because the picture on the display ones was awful (compared to others on display, presumably with same signal) in at least three shops. Anyone have real world experience of these?

True, however, according to the specs there's only an HDMI input, so you'd need a graphics card with DVI and a DVI-HDMI adaptor

Fair enough but which modern computer/laptop doesn't have DVI out? And DVI-HDMI cables can be had for £3 (asda instore for example), so I still think it's a good deal.

there has been a lot of CS issues with SVP recently

I wasn't disagreeing with you, I also think it's a good deal for the purpose you mention. Just making sure people realised they need the adaptor/alternate cable before purchasing
Also, if it's the same as the one in the Tesco thread, it has a VGA connection, maybe.

I hope so. Makes it an even better deal if so. I've noticed that since the Tesco deal was posted there have been a few cold votes for this one but, don't forget, the Tesco deal doesn't have a DVD player although, of course, it has the £50 groceries voucher, so you takes yer pick!

So would a normal PC monitor cable fit this or not?:?

According to SVP's specs, no, but they might be inaccurate. However, you can get VGA ('normal' PC monitor cable) to DVI adaptors/cables, so by extension you must be able to get a VGA-HDMI adaptor or cable, but I wouldn't like to say for sure.

No, VGA to HDMI can't be done with a cable. VGA to DVI-I (not DVI-D) is ok because both are analog signals. But HDMI is digital only so you would need a VGA to HDMI converter box (A-D converter) which are available but cost about £50.

DVI Digital video interface? Digital isn't it?

I thought you could convert from dvi to vga but not the other way round.

EDIT - I stand corrected, see a few posts down.

SVP great firm, used plenty of times in the past, just used to do, dirt cheap media but have gradually grown

HIGHLY recommended.

When I was a dvd burning n00b, quite a long time ago now I phoned these people and asked for advice and well the person who answered was quite rude and treated me as the n00b I was. Once bitten twice shy as they say, so consequently I never recommended them to any of my friends and bought dvds from the local market supporting my local trader. I wonder how much trade they lost, ah well they might be a good company now who don't pour scorn and patronise their customer base.

I won't vote cold because this seems like a good deal and other people have been happy dealing with this company, and it was just my experience after all.

There are both analogue and digital flavours of DVI connection - you can go either way if it's the same type each end, but you're not going to get from purely digital (e.g. HDMI) to purely analogue (e.g. VGA) or vice versa without a box in the middle to translate. ;-)

Our holiday home had one of these in it. Rubbish! Crashed a lot when using the DVD player.

Thanks for that, learn something new everyday!

I assume all the dvi-vga adapters out there are analog then? Doesn't the graphics card give out a digital signal? Or maybe it can detect whether vga is connected and adapt accordingly?

To clarify things, a computer does handle signals in a digital format and graphics cards do process digital signals. However, for legacy purposes whereby CRT monitors display an analogue signal, a RAMDAC in the graphics card converts the digital signals to analogue VGA.

Now, a DVI input on a monitor accepts a purely digital encoded signal and graphics cards that send out the signal via DVI or HDMI (yes, some graphics card do have HDMI outputs) then there is no need for a RAMDAC to perform the conversion which is why a DVI or HDMI signal is clearer than an analogue VGA signal. Furthermore, if using VGA on an LCD screen, then the LCD screen needs to reconvert the VGA signal (that was already converted by the RAMDAC) back to a digital signal resulting in further loss of detail.

With regards to DVI to HDMI - these are NOT converters. DVI and HDMI carry the same video signal so the DVI output of a graphics card does not need to be converted. DVI to HDMI cables are available but if using a DVI to DVI cable, then an adapter is required to change the pin mappings. VGA to DVI does require conversion by taking the analogue input and remapping the data to a matrix. Converters to perform the job are expensive (costing hundreds of pounds) although the process is actually quite straightforward and the high prices are not justified.

The comments about DVI-I is correct and is a way of allowing VGA signals into an LCD screen without a separate VGA input. The extra 4 pins of a DVI-I maps directly to the red, green, blue and synchronisation signals of a VGA connector. If anybody has one of these displays then they can verify if DVI-I is present by observing the right hand side of the DVI input for the 4 extra pins.

This screen is described as Full HD but for those who wish to connect blu ray players or other HDCP encoded feeds, they may be disappointed. The specifications does not mention HD Ready 1080P which is a requirement to play HDCP encoded content. Full HD is very loosely defined and HDCP decoding is not a requirement for a display to be described as Full HD. For those who wish to play HDCP encoded content (such as Blu Ray films) then it is worth researching whether the display does support HDCP decoding.

I am more concerned how reliable is this UMD brand , so many unknown brands of electronic appliances thesedays :?:?

I bought this in Tesco several months ago for my bedroom and it's been superb. Nice clear picture, excellent freeview signal, plays every file I've thrown at it so far.

Anyone know if it has the wall hanging bracket on the back? Or should I say can it be hung?

Well ordered one for my son's room...been looking for a flat TV screen for his small room.

Hopefully a bargain...

Heat added...thanks x

It's UMC not UMD - they are made in Slovakia - same as the Swisstec brand.

umc-slovakia.sk/

Always been a budget brand and I recall a few years back that some Swisstec models were pretty poor.

By coincidence I was in a mate's house this afternoon who has recently bought a 19" Swisstec. Picture quality is fine, but there are quite noticeable lip sync issues with it - certainly I couldn't live with one.

Whether that was down to the set itself or the poor weather affecting signal quality, I don't know [signal was ranging from just 50% up to 62%]

Mine came with a clip on stand which doesn't tilt / swivel but it has 4 screws on the back for use with a wall bracket

Have been taken over by another company, they were excellent before the takeover, the new company is nowhere near as good as the original one, it was originally known as " blankdiscshop. "

Lots of comments on here about poor service from the new owners.

Poor company and bet this won't be a brand new TV either!

What makes you say that? There's nothing on the web page to indicate it might be a refurb etc.

Pinkstacey. I hope you are wrong awaiting delivery!

They are new but the one I have recieved doesn't have a DVD Player built in!

Sending it back for a refund, why don't they just open the box when they get them in?

Sorry to hear that Lovingoursummer. I hope your experience is a one off and it's not SVP up to no good!

my first and last order with svp i received it with no dvd player. I can get the tesco 1 for £99. I have asked for a £50 refund and I keep the telly or they collect it for a full refund.

If they want my custom again they will refund me £50 and let me keep the telly instead of having the hassle of returning it.

Listing has been changed on website to non-DVD version.

Indeed it has, so this offer is no longer valid.

pathetic company
