This is a great phone. I'm using it now. Runs a stock Android and battery life is amazing.

People who are going to vote cold just because this is Gearbest should tell me what phone they would buy for the price from a UK seller - I honestly think this is a great price, driven down because Umi have released the Plus which to me looks like this phone in a different form factor...

Other than NFC this pretty much has it all. If I was going to moan I'd say camera could be better, and it's a bit heavy. But the heaviness comes from the battery size and build quality.

i am really looking forward to looking at your UK phone from a UK site, can't wait.

I think I fancy the umi plus... However, I've just seen that Xiaomi's Mi Mix is on the horizon and it looks fantastic.

This site is for deals available to people in the UK - but there's always one who doesn't understand this...

Voted cold due lack of updates from UMI, I've previously had the UMI Rome it got 4 small updates for bugs and no security updates at all. UMI also said it had USB C, 2500mAh battery and a screen that supports 10 points of touch when the phone arrived no USB C, no 2500mAh battery it actually had a 1300 mAh battery and the screen had 2 points of touch, it wasn't worth sending the phone back to China as it was half the price of the phone to return it. Buyer beware with UMI phones just do extensive research before buying it's just not the Rome UMI has lied about it's other models too.

So last year ....

A 1300 battery !! By the time it had booted it would have gone flat.

The battery was flat within 5 hours of very light usage, once bitten twice shy.

Umi has committed very publicly that this phone, and the Max and Plus, will get updated to Android 7 on 24th December. It would be incredibly embarrassing to the point of suicidal for them to fail to do this.

Also they make it incredibly easy to flash other Android skins onto their devices, such as EMUI and MIUI

What are these like compared to an LG G3? Had a G3 sent it back as coudnt get a signal on 3 tho......shame as seemed a good phone, especially the camera

And you've hit the nail on the head with regards to what to do once you've identified an issue. The cost if returning it back to China can make it unfeasible to do so. Were, if it had been purchased by a UK based retailer, restitution would be considerably easier. But, like you, I found myself in a similar position and ended up having to write the purchase off as a bad transaction.

I agree but then again many manufacturers publicly describe their devices as having an array of features when in reality it turns out not to be the case. Purporting to have a better battery capacity, 10 point touch and USB-C and then failing to delivery inspires little confidence that they will upgrade to Android 7

I agree with you, I would only buy a Chinese phone through a UK seller now so I could just return it to them without having to send it back to China myself.

If not being prepared to accept goods that are not as described makes one a snob, then you must be a very easy target.

I guess caution should be exercised. You could always wait for a review of the device from a reputable website such as Review Hub.

I have the Umi Super and I am honestly very impressed. Usually with 'Chinese' phones you have to make some sort of compromise or put up with some form of eccentricity. I would happily say with confidence that even the 'average' consumer wouldn't even realise that this is an import phone.

I bought one of these earlier this year from aliexpress. Had numerous updates, no problems at all.
GPS, battery life, build quality, screen - all good. No malware, no bloatware.

Only gripe is the camera is very hard to get the best looking shots from. Goes between under and overexposed, but found using HDR improves this.

The phone has a lot of nice features - finger print reader, fast charging and harlequin LED for example.

Btw I previously returned a handset to China (with insurance) only cost about £25 - just ask for the Royal Mail surface option (cheapest).

Do note that it has been known for manufacturers to make one batch of devices with high quality components, then when all the good reviews are in, to cut corners and produce shoddy successors.

Agreed, the camera does seems to be a bit Jekyll and Hyde. I've got some really decent shots out of it, but then at other times in similar conditions the results have been merely adequate.
Shutter speed is very good though.

Typical no-name phone problems: great specs on paper, but very little effort has been spent on tuning it to make all the bits work together properly. That is what costs money, after all. BTW, I am not a brand snob at all; it's just that the more sophisticated a device is, the more room there is for error when corners are cut.

Well that's true, but the last 2 updates from UMI have improved the camera - so they are spending the time and money to tune it.

You are also inferring that there will be all kinds of other problems with the device, which there just isn't any evidence of.

Big brands also cut corners (Samsung, Microsoft, SONY, you name it). You take a gamble with any device that there will be a quality problem, it's just whether the potential cost of returning it and or the hassle of getting a refund out weighs the potential money saved.

What was LOL-worthy about this running stock Android? A lot of people are put off by Chinese phones running their own Android skin.

i've had more updates on the Smart Ultra 6 and Xiaomi Note 3 than i did on my Samsung Mega.
