One of the most maligned films released recently!

Falling into my favourite, yet increasingly rare, sci-fi horror genre, I have some strong opinions on it.

Yes, it's obviously a take on Aliens. Not in some loosely derivative way, but Aliens is its DNA and proudly so.

Now that would usually make you think it's a cheap copy, but this turned out to be an entirely different animal altogether. Very rare a film like this crops up, here's why.

The film has incredible production values, values that put Aliens to shame (yes it lacks that broody feel which modern film techniques no longer capture, but this is truly next level stage setting).

The cast is wickedly good. Just as Aliens had Weaver at her best, we have Stewart who is perfect in the same role. The supporting cast are textbook Aliens personalities, and well done too. Vincent Cassel adds gravitas and comic relief by way of Miller.

So why does the film falter?

It's the script. Whoever wrote this needs flayed for eternity. Imagine your favourite movie, rewritten by a 12 year old who spent their existence only watching B-Movies. Add that to a lack of any originality aside from the film's general premise and you end up with too many eye-rolling scenes and cringey dialogue - both of which throw any sense of immersion out the window.

It's a tragic shame and a painful reminder why to make great sci-fi, so many pieces need to fall into place. Sci-fi, especially the horror sub-genres, are exceptional difficult to pull off. I can't think of anything more difficult, and it's partly why we have so few of them made.

Definitely do watch this. Stewart is a proper muse and the production is seriously brilliant. Imagine it redone with the same cast, different writer, and the worst offending scenes removed and it'd be a cult classic.

It's got Kristen Stewart in it, a horribly generic title, a plot that looks (at first anyway) to be a rip-off of The Abyss & Aliens and the Metacritic score is 48.

Genuinely without meaning any disrespect to other posters, I think I'll see it in other ways before splashing out (pun intended) a tenner on this!
I really enjoyed this film. Watched it three times now.

Just once so far for me but it definitely will get plenty more viewings. It’s great fun. Have pre ordered at this price as I would definitely have bought a steelbook of this if they’d bothered to release it
Quite enjoyed this, Sweet have some heat 🔥
It was a decent film to be fair.
I’ll have to watch this again! I didn’t like this movie maybe my mindset at the time!
I would be careful as 4k on itunes isn't 4k at the minute

Do you still see issues when playing a film that states 4k in the information bar?
I recently purchased Top Gun and that was the first film I noticed that was playing in HD (in the information bar), as well as Red (the film).
Otherwise most of mine are saying 4k and appear to be great quality still (I don't have a vast library like yourself though).

Aye thanks, I’ve seen that on AVForums.

What’s strange is the lack of consistency. Some films labelled HD are higher res than other films labelled 4K. Notably, all of them are way higher res than HD, despite the HD label.

Oh well, as long as they don’t take HDR/DV away, it doesn’t bother me too much.

There's no spoiler in it, and the fact that it's similar to the Alien franchise is how the movie has been marketed. Get in the sea with you (pun intended).

And let's be serious. If I really give a toss about something, like the very occasional big name UFC fight or Vegas boxing match, I don't go poking around Sherdog or any newspaper website on Sunday morning, because I know I'll see the result.

Same as a movie - who on earth trawls through a comment section on a month's old film when they don't want to know anything about the film.

Proper cotton wool stuff. Remember to check twice before crossing the road. Or better yet, ask for some help. Jeez.

The 'HD' flag coming up in the app isnt a reliable indicator of which films are at a reduced res. - its safest to assume most films streamed outside the US are being reduced at the moment just like with the other streaming services - they were just more forthcoming about it. It doesnt matter which store you bought them from or what device youre using

The results from posters like above showing actual res is far more helpful. It looks like they are limiting films to 3.7Mpixel.

So 16:9 films are at 1440p 2560 x 1440 wheres letterbox films (those black bars dont need 'pxiels') are more like 2900 x 1200. This is a 23% reduction against 33% for 16:9 films so the effect is less noticeable - but all the films do look soft to some degree.

At least the audio is still Atmos unlike Disney+

Watched JoJo Rabbit last night on ATV 4k and the picture looked brilliant.
If Apple are reducing their bandwidth, then why are films varied? It doesn't make sense.
And I doubt they are reducing the bandwidth on those films that are the most popular at present.

I contacted Apple in relation to Top Gun and they did confirm the reduced bandwidth, but wouldn't say when it would be lifted.

Unlike others though, I have seen zero blockiness.
Two months ago when it was just a random set of films showing HD in the app it didnt seem to be anything to do with bandwidth - just doing a few films made no sense and Apple have a history of taking down the odd 4K version from time to time.

But 2 months later nothings changed and the measurements above show its not just the films the app tags as HD affected - its actually quite a few films.

Its still inconsistent but there's likely a reason for that. Steaming companies probably dont down convert on the fly - instead a set of encodes at different bit-rates are created for each film and the app chooses the best one for your connection and device, So the streaming companies have taken away access to the top tier full 4K so we now get the next best - before they were only seenj by people with slower internet

Which set of encodes a studio provides varies so thats why there's inconsistencies in what we end up with. Also if the film was from a 2K DI the difference will be hard to spot. And its only a 23% resolution drop for a letterbox film.

In fact on a 55in TV at sofa distance even 1440p looks fine which is why most "4K gaming" on the new consoles will actually be 1440p upscaled.

How I interact with the stereotypical internet rule setter may not be reflective off how I interact with people I respect.

You simply put yourself into the category of one of the most irritating internet personalities and suffered the consequences of a pointed retort. Think about what I said and learn to relax online. It's not for you to police.

One of the most irritating internet personalities? A bit of an over dramatic statement, don't you think? For a simple suggestion. Just admit you're an arrogant person and don't take well to being criticized. No matter how minor. You must be a fun person to be around.

Edit: I'll admit I may have jumped the gun by making that suggestion. But that, in no way justified your rude, arrogant and blown out of proportion response.
