I am wrong or with these magnetic holders required haveing to glue a metal disk to the back of the phone which not only adds to the weight of the phone (after paying £100s for a latest all singing all dancing light weight phone) but then the disk cant be removed without damaging the back of the phone?
I always put mine between the back of the phone and my case / cover - assuming you use a cover. I don't even bother sticking it to the case, since I don't remove the case that often, seems to stay held in place nicely

Correct BUT the one I bought one a few weeks ago from Amazon came with a clear adhesive peel of label that you put on your phone first and then you attach the thin lightweight metal disc to it that is really sticky.
The label has a small peel of tag so you can simply remove it when needed with the metal plate still attached.
It costs slightly more than this deal at £7.90 but you get 2 car mounts and 4 small and large metal plates and matching adhesive protectors.

I got one of these in WH Smith at a Moto Services for £2.50. My case is metal and holds to it
Poundland sell their magnetic holders for a £1
I stuck the metal disk onto the cover. The metal disk eventually came off the plan was to glue it back on.

However I upgraded my phone, and bought a cover which has the magnet built into it.

Why not get a cover?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S9 and maybe I'm the luckiest person in the world and the only phone model that does it but I don't use the backing plate with these. It just works!

Seems there's something right in the perfect position which is magnetised. No adverse affects on my phone after 9 months.

Haven't been able to find another phone that does this yet but worth a try!
Bought three different makes, the glue that sticks it to the dashboard always fails within a few months. You probably get what you pay for, are there any that actually stay put after a long time?

I have bought 3 different brands from Amazon and each one has stuck on for more than a year. The last two were unknown brands 'MemTec' and 'Smart & Easy' - off amazon uk.
I sold my previous car at least one year after attaching - so it may still be attached.
My current car has one which I attached just over a year ago and still solidly stuck down.
Each time I just made sure, I cleaned the mount point thoroughly with alcohol wipes / spray - before sticking.

It's probably the wireless charging coil in the back of the phone.
