Would this work with an iPhone?

it says 2G.

It possibly uses the old charging system so doesn't charge newer models, hence the discount. You could use a 3G dock insert so the phone fits but it might not charge it.

You need the right base receptacle to suit your pod/phone.

There are different "universal" docks. I know the early one didn't have receptacles for later pods (before the phones came along).
It may/may not include the appropriate receptacle for your pod.
One receptacle is pictured top left on the box illustration.
Box should say which receptacles are included. Otherwise, its a matter of checking auction sites for the one to suit you ...

But the connector should be fine - its just a matter of supporting your thing on the connector.

By '2g' my guess would be that this is the one that added the support for the remote control and 'line out' connectors.

Note: this is almost certainly NOT going to include a charger. (Might include a dock connector to usb cable though.)

I have just bought the latest official universal dock (version 3) and that comes with all the different adapters for all models of ipod and iphone and a remote but does not include a power cable.

Original Poster

This has 6 adapters in the box,no cables supplied

says works with all ipod's which can be docked and other adaptors can be bought separately

(updated with correct info with thanks to wdh)

Just to clarify, there are 3 versions of the Universal Dock (Original with no IR and 2 with IR) and neither come with a power adapter.

Both versions use changeable faceplates that work on either dock. Most iPhones and up until recently iPods come with the little dock adapter plate in the box. You can buy them separately.

The first IR Universal Dock had a round IR receiver for the remote and on the rear has S-Video, Dock connector and line-out. This was mainly for older iPods and discontinued around the time the iPhone came out, though you can use iPhones and current iPods with it with no problems (though the iPhone and iPod Touch will display the 'Not Designed for iPhone' message). You can't use the Apple Component or Composite video cables with this dock (not compatible), and the S-Video only works on the older iPod Video / iPod Photo.

The second IR Universal Dock has a much smaller IR sensor and doesn't have S-Video. Again, any iPod will work though this one allows the use of the Apple Component or Composite video cables. The second dock also shipped with a Remote in the box.

bargain! worth getting a few for this price

Actually there was a third (EARLIER) "Universal Dock" with NO remote control IR.
I know this because I have one of those no-remote 'universal' docks!

This seems to be the 2G -- PREVIOUS to the current -- version.
No harm in that, it therefore should actually have an S-video socket that the current one lacks.

Bargain price for something with an aPpLe label on - I would buy a few and auction site them, tonnes of stupid people there that pay a fortune with buggy white plastic products with pictures of ap0ples on..

I didn't buy one ;-)

Just saw them and thought good reduction,it was in belfast

Tis indeed a good price, will take a peep while in local Tesco, unlikely to find though as in most HUKD instore posts

I'd buy a belkin tunesync instead for a couple of quid more. I've got one at home and one at work, they come with powersupply and a 5 port usb hub and audio out, and work fine with an iPhone. I got mine from fleabay, but it looks there are others selling them cheaply too, if you can find stock:

I got 2 of these from Boffer a while ago - they won't charge newer iPods or iPhones unless your computer is powered on (draws power from USB). The dock charges using the firewire pins so older iPods can be docked and charged whilst the computer is off but as long as your computer is on, iPhones and newer iPods work fine. I've got 2 of these in the house as it was cheaper than buying a regular dock

Can I ask which Belfast store it was, and how many of them you saw? If there was a few I may head there this afternoon!

Cheers.

Does this one come with the Remote too? Or is it just a simple dock?

Cheers! I'll try my local then head there if I have no luck. Heat added!

I saw one of these in the Dumfries store about a month ago, just after I bought the most recent version of dock with remote which was reduced to £15 (posted here approx 6 weeks ago, hitting about 250 degrees at the time),

This one is definitely the 2G version and definitely doesn't have a remote.

I've said several times it doesn't have a remote,

I checked the contents in the box as someone had already opened one of them

This is only the 2g dock without a remote, I paid £28 for the latest version 3 dock with remote and adapters for iPhone 3gs etc from Argos.

was in tesco earler (1 of the 2 tesco extras near me), didn't find this nor version 3(some one posted on here that they found it for under £15 at tesco). might have to stop over at the other extra near me or the home plus near where I work(has a large electronic section upstairs).

anyone know where I could get a remote for cheap that'll work with on of these?

Had a look today for one with a remote today in Tesco but the apple version was £28 so ended up buying the Gear4 ProControl AV for £12. Showing as £22 on line at direct.tesco.com/q/R…spx
Only had one so not sure if ithe price was unique to Bristol Imperial Park

The remotes need to have a IR receiver in the base, which I dont think the apple own one has.

The cheapest way to get a remote is probably one of the other threads here:
hotukdeals.com/ite…-cl

but read though the reviews or comments first before you purchase, since this is definitely a budget option.

If you can find them, they are available with the remote for £15: hotukdeals.com/ite…-re
