Hello, around 4-5 months ago this App was posted by someone, and I have been using it, and thought I would re post here and share and let you know

Its like OVIVO But FREE £0 Start up costs, and only needs Wifi - Get it while its Hot!

It works AMAZING!

You get a "new REAL number" using the app, and with that you can make FREE landline calls,

The great thing is, that you can install this on a tablet or mobile and needs WIFI ONLY!!! THE OTHER PERSON DOES NOT NEED WIFI

OPTIONAL: You can also watch a few videos/ads and get credits which you can use to cal UK MOBILE NUMBERS FREE!!! OVER WIFI

The app works Great!

Will Submit Lazy Links

Credit: goes to : maddoglewis2 who orignally found the app a few months ago

Just a FYI: "Change of tariff for UK: Calls to UK landlines are no longer free. The new tariff is 1 credit/per min." (From the "News" section in the Upptalk app).

In my honest opinion, this app will probably be gone like Ovivo in 4-5 months, It has a similar model, making money via adverts HOWEVER RIGHT NOW its FREE - Get it while its Hot! Been enjoying FREE Calls Cant complain

Pros:
Completely FREE UK/USA Landlines calls
£0 Start Up costs
Works on Tablet OR Mobile
Cheap Mobile minutes/text message through Ads
NO Mobile network needed
OTHER person does NOT need app

Cons
Needs WIFI
Needs a Smartphone/Tablet/ipad (Duh)

I should have posted this app. I have had it on my old iPod touch for a few years now , and I have had the app on my nexus 7.

On the nexus 7 , it has been working well.

It has been great for me , making quick calls.

So just to be clear, cos I'm thick, it only works over WiFi? So its VoIP? a sort of free Skype? Useful at home and where there's handy WiFi, but no good when out and about?

No it works if you have 3G INTERNET then yes it will work but I'm saying

You don't need 3g device, it ALSO works with WIFI sorry, if it was unclear, my mistake

you can all free landline, unlmited does skype do that?

I just downloaded it and yes it works. I've noted that it only allows number starting 01, it wont allow 02 or 03 and it wont allow 0800 freephone numbers. It allocates you a mobile number satrting 0753, so I'm not sure how anyone would call you on it if youweren't near a landline starting 01.

It operates on WIFI.

It isn't like Ovivo at all really, since you don't have to cough up £20 for a SIM card. Therefore you have absolutely nothing to lose.

That's not wholly correct. You can call landlines starting 01, but not 02 or 03 and you can't call freephone 0800.

i have used this for a few years now. I used it on my old iPod touch , just for quick calls.

I cannot remember , it used to called another name , then I believe it was taken over or a merger , not sure.

But a great app.

Is that a fact? Can others verify this? A lot of landline numbers I'd want to call start with 02 so are we saying this won't work for them?

I've downloaded the app and I'm not trying to be critical, just trying to work out what works and what doesn't

Thanks for that. I'll give it a go. Can I ask, it seems to need a mobile number in order to sign up, is that right?

No that's not right. It allocates you a mobile number, presumably so that others can call you. I've not fathomed how to get incoming calls yet without the calling party being charged. The number they allocate is a mobile number starting 0753.

Edit: OK it seems that others can call this 0753 number from the app and not be charged for it.

You're right, I apologise as when I tried one it wouldn't allow it. However, I just tried Harrods and it worked. I also tried a couple of 03 numbers for the BBC but it wasn't having any of them!
Edited by: "zerocrop" 7th Apr 2014

looks ok, thanks op.

@zerocrop. Have you tried dropping the zero from 0800 number. It may then work.

Yes tried it, but no luck.

Use skype for 0800 numbers

I think I prefer Viber.
Yes, you have to give your number to other person but it does work.

Yes but this is a slightly different animal in that you can use this to call landlines free of charge. That's the advantage of using this.

i've been using this app for months and love it! The call quality is great and when abroad someone can call you via wifi on your uk number that you are assigned. Also free landline calls in uk and free to call mobiles and landlines in the usa!

Noted.

Bit odd. Tried my landline number with Upptalk, and it works. But my friend on Vodafone, sitting next to me...no joy at all. He tried phoning the Upptalk number and it cuts out, no connection, same from my end with Upptalk.

My ordinary Giffgaff number receives calls and sends calls just fine from him. Tried taking the "0" off. Any suggestions? I'm using my Wi-fi.

Bit late to try other people's mobiles!

Is that the catch with this app? That it assigns you a number in the middle.

Therefore, this app steals your phone number, it records every conversation you have and probably steals your credit card info and any other sensitive information you give out... cos everything goes through their network.

I wouldn't use this app to place orders where you have to give your name, address or credit card info.

Um, source for this?

Nice one thanks

Do mobile operators not charge you to call 0753 numbers? Something to do with them not being normal uk mobiles or call forwarding service.

Really interested to how you can supposedly send SMS MESSAGES. How do you do that? I presume it doesn't allow for mobile to mobile sms as it isn't doing it for me!

EDIT: ahh nevermind, it costs 3 credits to send one sms so not worth my time. Cheers anyway Op.

This app seems ideal if you live in the USA.

There is something you need to beware of about Upptalk. You can earn free credits by doing things like downloading apps or watching commercials. Some of the apps are rogue and once you've downloaded and opened them as per the Upptalk requirements for earning free credits. They will scam you through premium rate text message services you haven't agreed to. I know this through experience. You can't stop the texts from coming no matter if you text STOP to the number like you're instructed to in the texts and by your mobile network operator when you ring them for help with the situation. I have to call up Virgin and get them to credit my account every month for the premium rate messages, which is a bit of a pain.

I'm not sure what you mean by "it assigns you a number in the middle"?

When you make a phone call in the UK, or anywhere else for that matter, it may pass through umpteen networks. For instance I make a call from a TalkTalk landline to Vodafone, it'll pass through BT until it get gets to my local exchange, then onto TalkTalk and then delivered by Vodafone. The phone network isn't particularly secure. The pair of wires that leave your house are quite insecure.

I understand what you are saying but I don't easily se how this can apply here since the mobile number you are assigned from Upptalk is one of their numbers and you don't need to have any credit on that number? Your personal mobile number need not come into the equation as I see it.

Yes UK operators will charge to call 0753 and they will charge for it as per a normal mobile number and so it would come out of any bundled minutes.

Erm, not like Ovivo - you need Wi-Fi.
What does it offer that Skype doesn't?

It offers free calls to UK, US and Canadian landlines. With Skype you get free calls, but only to other Skype users I believe. That, in a nutshell, is the difference.

I tried this a few weeks ago on a Galaxy S4 and couldn't get it to assign me a mobile number (it just hung when I tried). I got a couple of responses from the UppTalk support guy but after a while he stopped responding. Anyone else have this issue?

Hey glad it works for you!! Tell your friend to wait 24 hours then try. It might work then, or again test on a tablet or another phone thanks for your reply !
