Update 28/03/18: the extra 1GB of data is now live* (as of 29th March), for more info on how you get it, click here

*Recurring Goodybags from 29th March, non-recurring by "the end of April".

GiffGaff are still good for me as most of my family/friends are on it - not for everyone, though...Just received a text message about this!

There's also changes to Data, by allowing "add-ons" (by the end of March - date to be confirmed),
"Once you’ve bought your first 3 goodybags we’ll simply boost your data by 1GB extra every month when you buy a £10, £12, £15 or £18 goodybag.Call it a reserve tank or a data lifeline we just want to make sure we give members who use a lot of data a helping hand to get them to their next goodybag if they run out."

The blurb from their Forum:

"We always challenge ourselves to provide great value and keep things simple for our members so I’m excited to share two new goodybag improvements.

Unlimited minutes
First up, from Thursday 22nd Feb we’ll be moving to unlimited minutes on our goodybags at £10 and above. We hope big callers will be delighted with the news. For everyone else, we know minutes have tended to become less important over time but here's the upside, it means we can afford to simplify things by making minutes one less thing for new and existing members to think about when choosing their goodybag.

You don’t have to do anything, we’ll simply add the unlimited minutes next time you buy a £10, £12, £15 or £18 goodybag from Thursday 22nd.

More data - when you need it most
And now for something a little different. We know that running out of data can be a real pain which is why unlike any other network provider we analyse your usage every month and tell you the best goodybag for you. This does the trick nicely but there’s always a chance you can have an exceptional month and use more data than usual.

Now, if this happens you can of course buy your next goodybag early but we thought, wouldn’t it be nicer if we saved you the hassle and simply gave you extra data to keep you connected.

So that’s what we’ve done. Once you’ve bought your first 3 goodybags we’ll simply boost your data by 1GB extra every month when you buy a £10, £12, £15 or £18 goodybag.

Call it a reserve tank or a data lifeline we just want to make sure we give members who use a lot of data a helping hand to get them to their next goodybag if they run out.

Here’s an example of what the My account page will look like:
2898051.jpgIt’s not quite ready, we’re planning to make the change by the end of March, so we’ll update you when we have a confirmed date.

Remember unlimited minutes come first on Thursday 22nd Feb."

Edit: GiffGaff now allows tethering - mentioned here in December community.giffgaff.com/t5/…208 (they had restrictions a few years back, afaik).

Shame they aren't re-introducing unlimited data, though, that's what first attracted me to GiffGaff years ago

Id only their reception was any good, its abysmal in most places, prob down to O2 piggyback and throttling
Have giffgaff data speeds improved in the last year or so. I used to use them but was soooo slow.

All I can say is that I avoided using 4G Goodybags (when I first got a 4G phone around 3 years ago) when I discovered my connection was buffering and cutting out during podcasts/streams - in Glasgow City Centre! This was not my data being capped, either, it was my first 4G Goodybag and happening not long after I purchased.

Being told on their Forum to "connect to hotspots" by some GiffGaff members didn't help my bad mood, and is a pretty disgraceful way to reply on a support forum - not to mention patronising (which is why I rarely post on there!!) community.giffgaff.com/t5/…rue
Haven't tried 4G Goodybags since, so the situation may have improved (?). In comparison, 3G is rock solid where I live.

Not sure how useful this Network Review from January 2018 is, but: 4g.co.uk/gif…ry/

which states,
"Average Download Speed: 18.48 Mbit/sec
Average Upload Speed: 9.40 Mbit/sec"

(not sure how they acquire these stats, though, as surely that will depend where you're located) . Also, "4G data capped at 9GB" - not sure if this will change with the upcoming Data package tweaks.

Here's some recent-ish Forum threads about data speeds (though, of course, people go on the Forum to moan, not to praise...which I'll read through myself) community.giffgaff.com/t5/…651 and community.giffgaff.com/t5/…353

A couple of comments on the former thread suggest GiffGaff now allows tethering, also mentioned here in December community.giffgaff.com/t5/…208

I'll try doing a Speed Test if I head out later.

Edit: Apparently I've been with GiffGaff seven years - that long?! Maybe I'll get the seven year itch soon...

Would have been better if the £5 goodybag had more data and unlimited calls.
More people would re-join it.

I left because I got a better deal elsewhere for less than £10 for more data.

Unlimited calls for £5, are you serious?
Why not ? Most people don't use their calls that much nowadays, Most would only use the data (Whatsapp calls)
At least 1000mins would be enough.
Or at least if the data unused for that month could roll onto the next that would be great.

Whole family was with them until the last 18 months, because of low speeds 2Mb if we were lucky in city centres we have all left. in their last managing director note after their financial report was issued on the forum he answered questions and said that speed wasn’t a concern but only by improving profits at GG could this allow the owners o2 to invest in the network, a few weeks later o2 let Sky in on their signal, GG was even further down the priority list, after o2, Tesco and then sky.

All well and good GG making a massive profit for o2 but only at the expense of the customer who like yourself stayed with them because they didn’t really know any better or stayed out if loyalty, so many comments on their forums like that. We were like you been with them probably since they started but left and haven’t looked back. Various plusnet deals, Tesco, virgin and eventually set with virgin where I don’t think we will move for a long time, 5Gb and all the data and texts we need for £4 and daughter is on 40Gb for a tenner deals are gone now but at those prices we won’t be leaving in a hurry. Oh and speeds of 25 to 40Mb

On the contrary, my mom uses most of her minutes and none of her data. Doesn't need it. It's a shame they don't have goodybags without data at a lower cost.
Typical, I've just left and gone to Plusnet but on the plus side data speeds in most locations are faster than I was getting with giffgaff.

Should make ones for calls and texts and another for a Limite of calls and more data

And texts, just switch data off use Wifi and voila Smarty.co.uk
Edit:sorry should have said no credit check, no contract and runs on Three, it’s a Three own subsidiary like Vodafone Voxi and o2 Giff Gaff

Just waiting on EEs version now...

Good if you’re stuck on o2, expensive contracts, even Voda is much cheaper now.
They just don't get it. I don't care what they give me, I don't want to spend £10 a month. A paltry extra 1GB isn't going to sway me to double my spend. They don't do anything well anymore. They aren't cheap, unlimited, fast or novel. Not competitive compared to things like Smarty either.

No offence OP. I'm just pretty unhappy on GiffGaff, the offer is pretty miserable compared to what I first signed up to.

I agree, actually - I joined 7 or so years ago and it was the Unlimited Data (£10 Goodybag) that clinched it. Can't remember what the original call minutes were, though.

I never use up all my minutes quota, but I'm usually pretty near my data allowance by the end of the month. The free GiffGaff to GiffGaff calls for three months after a Goodybag expires, is probably what makes me stay.

Their online support forum, as mentioned, is pretty horrible. Maybe slightly improved as they tightened up the rules around reward points/free credit, to members who are actually informative and helpful, but you still have to wade through a lot of doggy doo before you get to any useful replies.

This and the fact they had/have better indoor signal, which may be due to them operating at lower frequency (haven't checked)

Actually tempted by Smarty (recent thread about them on MSE forums.moneysavingexpert.com/sho…019 ) though they run on 3. Will have to check, as I'm pretty sure my brother had problems with 3G/4G coverage in Glasgow. You can keep your old number help.smarty.co.uk/get…rty

Edit: Brother said (about 3), "That was over 3 years ago now, think coverage is much better now as they were due to upgrade their bandwidth".

Should be sorted now, Go Binge launch meant as your bro said backhaul bandwidth had to be sorted ASAP (via its joint venture with EE, MBNL), although EE and Three site share the bandwidth to each transmitter is paid separately I understand. Glasgow has one of the best Three network of base stations as they set it up like that with customer services there as Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city so it was £ in the bank. Some base stations came down after the T-Mob merger to MBNL but most stayed up as T-Mob had few in comparison to Three.

For a fiver trial you can always port out, no worries.

I’m gonna get my mate on this she’s paying £10 a week on Three payg

Update 28/03/18: the extra 1GB of data is now live, for more info on how you get itclick here

Any recurring goodybags starting from tomorrow (29th March), will automatically come with the extra 1GB included (providing you’ve bought at least 2 goodybags in the past). You don’t need to change your settings or update anything, we’ll just add it on for you.

The team are working hard to get this ready for non-recurring goodybags too and are aiming for this to be available by the end of April. If you simply can’t wait, then from tomorrow (29th March) onwards, turning on recurring for your next goodybag will do the trick.
