I'm posting this as I know there are people here who like automatic watches. I don't think I've ever seen Fossil automatic watches here and I'd like to know peoples opinion on the price and style. The link should point to the two styles which are availble in a variety of finishes
This is the other style

For those who know nothing about the American brand Fossil, there's a good article here which shows the origin and current position in the market

Not an expert in watches but Fossil, an American manufacturer of watches (and fashion goods) has been around since the 1980s. As well as their own brand, apparently, they make watches for Emporio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, DKNY, Diesel, Burberry, Relic, Michele, Zodiac, Adidas, Tony Burch, and Armani Exchange and others
They all have a two year guarantee,
Fossil are considered to be "fashion watches" without much kudos on watch forums but they also pooh-pooh Quartz.

In the end, just wear what you like and don't care what other people think. It's about your enjoyment, not people's perception of you

I've just bought myself a watch for my birthday - it very nearly was the Cream dial Orient Bambino but then a CRAZY BARGAIN came up and I can't resist a bargain

Well that's nice

These are automatic.
Not quartz of course.
As a watch their accuracy is much lower than any quartz crystal, And they are not as reliable.
But that doesn't appear to be why people buy them anyway.
They look more interesting?
But anyway, a quartz crystal watch is just a quartz crystal watch, Most have Japanese movements but that's about it, AFAICT

Seems to be for digital and smart watches?
Though it seems you don't want to have to deal with customer services

Orient watches are very well regarded at the sub £200 price point. I have the watch in the link and its absolutely lovely. Well made and fairly good quality strap. Nice diver. The sunburst dial is very nice.

You mean this one?
Apparently these Orient (Chinese) automatic watches have Japanese movemnts.
The Fossil ones appear to be their own apparently made in the West (maybe even Switzerland, at least some are)
Unless you are clued up, you probably wouldn't even notice that this was an automatic.
The ones in my post obviously are as you can see the mechansim from the front and the back
38470142-2QW5p.jpg
Fossil overall is a good brand and has a history of distinct innovation in watch design (starck ) and watch function (they made one of the first digital smart watch almost a decade ago.) this particular one has an automatic mechanism from China.
Orient is a Japanese brand owned by the same company that owns seiko. They have their own mechanisms and they are not Chinese: they may assemble some watches in China.
In general Orient and seiko mechanisms are good and reliable although some say that eta2824 (the entry mech from Switzerland) is better but at different price range. All manufacturers create various lines of mechanisms at different price points and reliabilities.
Now this watch : if you like skeleton ones buy it. Not easy to find a skeleton one at that process from Orient / seiko. They have some other very nice models with prices below 200, and of course much variability even higher than that!

I was going to say the same thing! You can do all the research you want, you'll always find poeple with other opinions - just go with what works for you! 'watch people' do not like fossil - its a fashion brand that make a whole bunch of brands, which are mostly made in china etc. Orient is really well known in those 'watch circles' but hardly heard of by regular folks.

*customer service at fossil is terrible in my experience - I had an american bought diesel watch - it broke, short version: fossil uk, after A LOT of chasing by me, did eventually send me a cd with PDF catalogs of last seasons' stock and sold me a replacement at what is possibly cost price. the broken watch was still under warranty (but usa purchase...)

*i managed to speak to fossil USA who immediately sent me a voucher over the price i paid! $120 when i paid $80! although i had to order the watch to a usa address.

Is that so? My information is that the movements in these Fossil watches are made in the West, maybe even Switzerland. Fossil has a company in Switzerland where (apparently) some of their automatics are manufactured.
I didn't know Orient was actually a Japanese brand.
Regarding the mechanism, according to the watch face it appears to be a Japanese movement

Personally, I would not buy any sort of automatic. They are more of an ornament than a watch. But these seem to be good value for skeleton watches

In the picture of the watch it shows the back of the mechanism and clearly has a China on the rotor of the watch so I used this as evidence.

Orient makes the mechanism in house in Japan . For watch aficionados this counts a lot. Assembly may happen overseas.

Quartz vs mechanical is a long discussion. I collect mechanical watches because I like the idea of mechanics and not electrical power and allows me to narrow choice and be part of a community of people that talk about them. Indeed they are a jewel and an ornament for me. If I wanted cheap and reliable and easy to maintain I would not be buying mechanical watches... But we do many things in life contrary to logic...
The silver one is completely unreadable.

Well it is a skeleton watch, I think you're supposed to admire its beauty rather than actual resorting to reading the time

Yes it does say that on the back of the watch

This is definitely a "Marmite" watch but I went for it. The forum I saw it on has mostly US bargains, so I was in bed when it was originally posted. By the time I saw it all strap options were gone (think they were only an extra $10). Only display/ex-review stock left now, no strap, weirdly it's the same price as the New one I went for.

*You need to use the TIMEBUM discount code

Like you say definitely marmite but superb spec for the money. I'll bet the movement cost more than the asking price of the watch.

I'd kind of like to be able to do both.
Here's another, cheapo, Skeleton Automatic (not that I'm suggesting this is "better"!!) but weirdly, some pictures of this "Anthony James" watch say "Barkers Of Kensington" on them, so it's probably a mushroom brand.38473172-YMA24.jpgAnother thing that strikes me about it, as I spent so long looking for bracelets a few months ago, is that the bracelet looks very similar to this bad boy or this
(basically bracelets that cost £1.49+) so, if you buy these in bulk, they are probably sold for pennies.
38473172-CiJsD.jpgIt's a learning curve, but my point is, you should always buy the best for your budget.

I actually saw a presentation of "Barkers Of Kensington" on TJC (formerly The Jewellery Channel) the other night - suggesting these are premium, top-quality watches at a discount price who sell in the £hundreds at RRP. Ahem. Also known as "Invicta pricing" - this one is touted as being £650 RRP.
