It's meant to be a 'fairytale day' – but getting married can be very and costly and soon mount up - between dresses, cake, venue, and all the little extras.

Hopefully this thread will help, please share own ideas too

I popped into a cake shop and give them the specification of a cake I wanted. They quoted me a price of £80. I was just about to give them the go ahead before they asked what it was for and upon telling them it was for a wedding the price went up to £600. The final finishing decoration was apparently worth 6.5 times the value of the cake. Hmm.
I just want to get married for the Krispy Kreme tower and the rest of the amazing things. What a great thread

Cakes

If you want to cost on your cake, then why not try one of the supermarket options, if you want more decoration you can get someone to decorate it.

Tesco - They don't have a massiive range, but worth a look, especially for their cutting bars which are only £12 / £14 each. These don't go on show, but held behind the scenes for the venue to cut up (maybe for the evening do?)

Waitrose - have a great range of cakes to suit different budgets

Marks & Spencer - have an amazing range of gorgeous Cakes

33109722-QOqAK.jpg

33109722-O7O8M.jpg

Hobbycraft

How about a Donut Board?

33109722-Hbc5M.jpg

Looking for something a bit different?

Krispy Kreme - This Towers of Krispy Kreme doughnuts looks AMAZING They also do wedding favours.

33109722-mpMRI.jpg

Costco - How about a The Dorset Cheese Tiered 10kg Celebration Cake £149.99 Delivered @ Costco

33109722-dZf4a.jpg
Some tips

Pick an odd day / date for your wedding. The venue is usually one of the costliest bills. If you pick an unpopular day, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays you could get a good discount on the venue, photographers, florists etc. The downside to this is that fewer guests may be able to attend if you pick a weekday

Haggle - there is always room to haggle, and if for eg; a venue say they can't discount the price, try to get them to throw something in for free, like champagne, or chair covers.....

have some heat for the effort put in
Heat added. Just goes to show how normally you mention the word 'wedding' and the price doubles, trebles, and then quadrupples.
Great post, I feel like getting married again just to wear one of those gorgeous dresses!

Black for weddings and I'm not a Goth.
Omg I love the donut cake that’s completely amazing and those 👗 are really pretty! Thanks op
Shocking how the industry brainwashed people regarding getting married
Well done - heat added for your effort.. The amount of money people spend on weddings now amazes me. I only got an engagement ring three years ago as I wanted furniture for our house and we couldn't afford both at the time. A certain money saving person was lambasted for not advising on the best loan for weddings earlier this week on daytime TV. Good on him. It's a racket.
Don't do it. It's almost guaranteed you'll regret it.

When poverty comes in at the door love flies out of the window. Not a good way to start a life sentence together

My mum used to own a bridal shop and she's always said that photographers/cake shops/florists etc love the word wedding because they almost double their prices just with customers mentioning the "W" word. She said to just call it a formal party/family gathering/celebration instead.
A great post, thanks, the dresses are beautiful and the birdcage cake is lovely
Fantastic post.

Wedding bands - if you want plain or simple textured wedding bands, give the Betts Metal Sales website a try. If you sign up for a free trade account ("hobbyist" counts) you see much lower prices than those displayed to the public.

We got our weddings bands for a fraction of the price of a high Street jeweller as they charge by weight / the current price of gold. They are hallmarked and made to your specifications. The thickness of the metal is far better than somewhere like Argos, their medium weight bands are much thicker than Argos heavyweight.

You can choose the finish too , eg if you want a pattern in the gold or a sandblasted texture or just normal polished.

My husband's 9k gold 4mm heavy weight court was about £80 and my 18k gold 2mm heavy weight comfort court was about £90 including engraving and an extra fee as they needed to make a special mould to make one that slim. This was 3 years ago but just to give you an idea of price.

Tip:, consider palladium as a more affordable alternative to platinum
great ideas and tips guys Me and my better half are getting married later this year in August. All these tips are amazing. Already had the wooden heart frame idea in mind after venturing to hobbycraft a few weeks ago. Any further tips are welcome
I wish more places did cheaper "just us" packages! I'd get married in a heartbeat if it was easier to have a nice classy wedding without any guests (apart from my kids) but most places that do offer it charge a fortune! Not everyone wants to do it in a shabby registry office!
Thank you for the post I get married in 6 weeks and I still haven't sorted out what I am wearing and I am also finding it quite difficult to find bridesmaid dresses all on a budget
Oh I just lurrve wedding dresses....!

Great tip, been looking for a simple platinum band for her (engagement ring is platinum so want it to match) and I only want something simple and the pricing on that site is so much better than high street. Thanks.

You are most welcome, I found out about them via a post on MSE , it's amazing the price difference x
Another tip for wedding cheese cakes, have a word with your supermarket cheese counter, they can usually order whole cheese wheels in for you so you can DIY a stacking cheese cake quite cheaply

Waitrose/ocado do the heart shaped brie cheeses for £4 each for decoration: ocado.com/web…r=y

Or cheddar £5

waitrose.com/eco…131
Remember chi chi have 10% off first order an 15% off for students, I don't know if the two would stack or not. Anyway it could bring the price down further to £76.50 and £72.25 for the Sophia dress

Me and the Mrs got married at the local registry office, with only our parents present. Why waste so much money? Spend it on the honeymoon! After 20 years we're still together. How many people who have spent thousands on a wedding are still married?
I really wished you had posted this many years ago. I would of saved a fortune.

Great effort which will should help alot of people.
Top tip on alcohol at your wedding reception, for those that aren't aware, is to ask if the venue will allow you to bring your own wine/bubbly (or other) and for you to pay a corkage fee. Many venues do not mention this as obviously they'd prefer you to buy their wine, but even the cheapest house wine can work out a lot more expensive than bringing your own wine and paying corkage. I think my wife and I saved about £10 per bottle for an equivalent wine to the one we bought ourselves - so you could save a fortune here by asking the venue.
Debenhams has 20% off certain wedding dresses atm ! And i got a code through email for extra 20% off on top due to secret VIP sale DK23PEADZN is the code is anyone needs works on woman’s wear / kids and men’s clothing

You took your parents? Bit OTT. We took the two kids (cheaper than getting a babysitter) and had to have a couple of rent-a-witnesses. Wife's dress came from Oxfam for £8, but I forgave her the extravagance as it was a special day.

Still together as we head towards our 60's.

Save money for that divorce! With current odds, might as well put it all on red.
