Fantastic phones and they provide superb value for money, but the names of the new redmi series is very similar and its very confusing choosing the correct one. Redmi 5, 5A, Note 5, 5 Plus. etc....

I have made a small and basic spec/price list of the popular models of the New Redmi '5 Range' all with Band 20 from Aliexpress priced from £62 to £145 (some have global version without Band 20 cheaper)

Basic spec comparison

2889492.jpg
These are the cheapest prices from Aliexpress with links:

£64 = 2/16GB Redmi 5A Link here
£86 = 3/32GB Redmi Note 5A Link here

£87 = 2/16GB Redmi 5 Link here
£98 = 3/32GB Redmi 5 Link here

£115 = 3/32GB Redmi 5 Plus Link here
£133 = 4/64GB Redmi 5 Plus Link here (Reduced)

Prices above is for the cheapest colour selected (usually gold)
Choose the free delivery - not DHL to avoid customs charge.

You may find slightly cheaper through another seller, please let me know and I will try and keep links updated. Also exchange rates fluctuate daily and shop sales change.
Hope it helps!

Iv ordered 7 Xiaomi phones from aliexpress with free delivery, never once been hit with any charges, so have 100's of others on here. General consensus is only the people who have chosen DHL have paid customs, and free delivery has not attracted any fees.

Vast majority of sellers mark phone as a gift and declare a $20 dollar value on customs form. - so even if you have to pay it would be very minimal. Again Its extremely unlikely to pay custom fees when free delivery is selected (although of course not 100% guaranteed)

Tiptop community driven idea, most of the ones in your list have gone hot then out of stock as they were posted, so good to have a single reference point for anyone who missed out or is waiting on theirs to arrive

Pressed "+" and it immediately went from "0" to "-2", huh?
I believe Redmi Note 5A had 2xSIM plus microsd slot.
Some have fingerprint readers depending on memory configuration.
Adding that info may help to clarify further.
Quick question, if I choose free standard shipping, will I get charged customs or tax?

Maybe, maybe not.

It seems you're less likely to get hit for VAT than if you pick an express delivery method, but there are no guarantees either way.

Bank on paying VAT and the customs handling fee and be happy if you end up not having to.
Ali Express?
When I click on first link Redmi 5A, I seem to go to a French Ali Express page, huh?

Love the effort you've put in OP. Heat.

Hmmm, thinking I might get my Dad a Note 5a instead of waiting for another drop on the Note 4 - which I can personally vouch for as an ex-user. Anyone here got any actual experience of the Note 5a? Can't see much difference between them on GSM except for the plastic back, lesser battery and a screen on the 5a - I guess that's enough

Heat for the effort OP!
Good effort, wanting the redmi note 4 64gb 4gb ram sub £125 like it was the other day. Fingers crossed.😁

There is no hard and fast answer, but I would say the chances are a lot lower if you go for the slower cheap mail option.
If it goes with one of the major parcel companies, they quite often automatically collect the customs excise for HM Revenue and charge an admin fee too, they also hold your parcel ransom until paid!
Usually if you go with the free option, they fall under the radar and quite often the sender just write on the package it's a £5 MP3 player, and gets ignored for customs charges.
I've ordered 20+ items from Asia and never been charged when using free postal option. But be prepared to wait 20-30 days for delivery.
You usually still get a tracking number, but the tracking websites are usually quite slow at updating.

There are a few options missing(from the table), one being the Redmi 5 3gb/32gb

Also the Note 5a 2gb/16gb (Note 5a 2gb/16gb doesn't have fingerprint reader, just like the 5A 2gb/16gb)

Xiaomi fan here. Great post. Heat! This sort of post really helps the online community in making an informed decision. As OP says they are all called something similar so cheers for this :-)
Brilliant post.

I've got the Redmi Note 4, brilliant phone can't fault it for the money.

Tempted to get the 5 Plus....
Great post, heat added

Thanks - OK so whats the best model with NFC? i'm guessing thats why android pay doesn;t work...
That Redmi 5 Plus is tempting but I really do not like MIUI. What's support like? Is LineageOS available for it? Would be better if it was an Android One phone with a screen that size. Unless they're planning a Mi A2 with better specs? I'd wait if it meant I'd get something similar with pure Android.

It's as simple as: if you want an Amazon-esque shopping experience, shop on Amazon.

There's more risk with these Chinese sites, but the reward is much lower prices vs what you'd pay in the "West". If that risk is too high for you, then don't shop on Chinese sites. If the Chinese sites lowered that risk to Amazon levels, the prices would end up near Amazon levels too.

It's almost impossible for them to list all potential import charges, for all items and all countries. If you want a reasonable estimate for the UK, take the price of the item, add 20% and then add on another £10 for the shipping company's customs handling fee. That will get you somewhere very close to the maximum amount you'd possibly have to pay.

I've never come across a decent camera on a lowish price Xiaomi - but their other features make up for it

Correct. None of the Redmi devices have NFC, but some of the Mi devices do. Check out Mi5, Mi5s, Mi5s Plus, Mi Note 2, Mi Note 3, Mi Mix and Mi Mix 2. Keep in mind, though, that they are all quite a bit more than these, and for the most part, don't support Band 20 LTE. I have Mi Note 3, and have just sold a Mi5 and android pay works perfectly.
