Wedding / Bridesmaid Dresses

For us girls, the wedding dress is one of the most important buys - and the high street have rather impressive selection. These 'off the peg' dresses are not only cheaper, but they are usually very 'current' in terms of fashion trends and make it a lot easier to find a dress for a wedding

Now you've helped plan the wedding, any deals or discount codes to find the Bride?
I've known people borrow thousands to get the wedding they dreamed of only to still be paying the loan well after they're divorced
Two words no woman wants to hear in the same sentence, wedding and budget.
Budget all the way... the best / closest couple I know just got married in clothes they already owned... they just invited their close friends and family and didn't need to impress anyone

No can be about it. Everything wedding is price doubled with the vendor looking earnestly at you saying "it is your special day..."

It's worth having a word with your local independent companies too. My wife is a well-established wedding dress designer whose company makes bespoke alternative wedding dresses that are hand made to order in the UK, which obviously means they aren't a budget option. However they will often have sample sales of dresses that have been made for magazine photo shoots etc, with one-of-a-kind dresses going for at least 50% off of the normal price, and often much cheaper, just because they were in a few photos and now can't be sold as everything is made-to-measure. Plus you'll also be helping a local business and the UK's textile industry, which was decimated by companies outsourcing manufacturing in China.
Hi, which company is she working for? I'd like to check those half price dresses, thanks for info

Apologies, missed your comment. Her company is The Couture Company in Birmingham, but I'm not sure how useful that will be to you as a) her stuff isn't the traditional white wedding dress stuff, it's more alternative so not for anyone looking for the usual sort of dress and b) their workshop/showroom is in Birmingham so you'd have to get there. You can see some examples of dresses if you search for Couture Company Sample Sale on Facebook - the samples start from a couple of hundred quid, which might not seem cheap compared to the prices above but it's a one-off handmade item as opposed to something bought in from China.

However what I was trying to say was there's loads of other similar independent dress makers that will have similar sample sales, so if you call someone whose work you like near wherever you are based you then you might be able to pick up similar bargains if you ask. Bespoke dressmakers will have sample gowns that get used for a shoot once by a model then can't be sold as everything is made to measure.

Why are these so cheap ?
Anyone know anything about the quality?
There’re still doing wedding rings at Argos for about £15. 😘

Why are these so cheap ?

Proper wedding dresses have several layers, often four or more, with heavier higher quality material, intricate designs, button and loop traditional back fastening, some dresses can be bustled etc. Real wedding dresses are measured and designed to fit perfectly. Those ones listed are more an evening wear style, and there is nothing wrong with that at all, and you could get a seamstress to alter them so it fits better and the hem will skim your wedding shoes. It comes down to budget and preference I guess.
Or...Just...Don't

If you have an idea what you like could you try to make them, pinterest has some great examples. Its easy enough to make table centre pieces with fish bowls and mirror platee then adding decorative gravel and candles (country baskets is great for all these things) or even different size mason jars.
If you want the personal touch for place settings try companies like the wooden shape company, they have personalised laser cut wooden names for your guest as place settings / favours start around 30p per name depending in size and finish and wedding guest framed drop boxes for something for you both to keep.
I hope this may be of some help

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated. As for the place settings, we are just having a buffet type meal to save on costs, though to be fair, my family would probably be happy if I just ordered a load of domino's or Subway sandwiches (they are classy like that), not sure the future in-laws would approve though! I agree with your comment on pinterest too i'm always looking for DIY related wedding ideas! Thanks again for the advice

I bought my dress and sequin top from Monsoon, and multi-way bridesmaid dresses from M&S. They were all excellent and easy for a seamstress to alter.

We combined NUS, mailing list discounts, birthday mailing list bonuses, Sparks card and gift cards to bring the price down. Bridesmaid dresses were £44 each and my outfit was £400 all in.

We also got most of our table decorations from IKEA (365 day refund policy for Family members )

We did similar... my wedding dress was a stunning Jasper Conran dress that I bought for £32 (using nectar points in Debenhams!) and our wedding cake was a 3-tier chocolate one from M&S that we used a friend’s staff discount on! Still happily married 11 years later.... whereas other family members who spent thousands on harpists, castles, custom-made dresses and little steak-on-stick canapés have divorced/live a life of debt & misery! The wedding day is just that, ONE day. It’s how compatible and happy you’ll both be for the days, months and years afterwards that really matters!
