Upgrading your Dell to Vista

Moderator
If you are buying a Dell in the next few weeks I would recommend that if available as an option you make sure to choose the MCE operating system as Dell have seen fit to charge an extra £25 to upgrade to Vista basic from XP home, where the upgrade from MCE to Vista Premium is Free.
You may find that when selecting your OS for your new Dell that (if available) selecting MCE is either a free upgrade or is charged at £23. This is still worth it as it will enable you to get the Vista Premium upgrade for free plus £11 postage instead of paying £25 plus £11 postage and only getting Vista basic.

Vista upgrades:

XP Home to Vista Basic Upgrade on: dellvistaupgrade.productorder.com before 03/31/07
£25 plus shipping & handling costs £11 payable at time of redemption Discount Details

MCE to Vista Premium Upgrade on: dellvistaupgrade.productorder.com before 03/31/07
FREE Upgrade+shipping&handling costs£11 payable at time of redemption Discount Details

XP Pro to Vista Business Upgrade on: dellvistaupgrade.productorder.com before 03/31/07
FREE Upgrade+shipping&handling costs£11 payable at time of redemption Discount Details

You may also find that any Dell you have bought after Oct 26th is eligible for the upgrade too, use the link below to enter your tag to find out.

Vista Upgrade

In order to be eligible for this program, you must have ordered an eligible Windows Vista Capable computer from Dell between October 26th, 2006 and March 15, 2007 with Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition, Genuine Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 or Genuine Windows XP Professional pre-installed. See list of eligible systems. This redemption must be completed by no later than March 31, 2007 in order to take advantage of the promotional upgrade offer.

im looking to buy me a new pc in the new year whats Dell's sale like any good nothing making me buy from dell for defo coz of there lack of customer care once they have had your ££££

Just did mine (MCE to Vista Premium £11) - says wont ship till February. Is odd that they want to charge Home users £25 extra, i thought it was free - especially as they only get the basic version!

No crystal ball here Ant so I cant tell what the new year will bring, but Vista will boost Dells sales no doubt and all other manufacturers will be also playing catch up with lots of potential customers having waited for Vista before buying so prices should be keen though the extra ram needed to run Vista smoothly may deplete some of the discounting.
As to Dells aftercare, I've not really had much of a problem with them, the Indian call center can sometimes be a pain but you can get round that if need be. They are normally happy to ship out some parts for customers to fit if there are problems with a C&R warranty item. Things in Dells dont seem to break very often for me, quite sturdily built I would say.

This of course may change to free if Dell get enough stick over it, but I thought it best to make buyers aware now in case it doesnt.

you reakon prices will rise

maybe ill get amachine in january and use the upgrade!

Prices may rise if memory chip prices become unstable...as there will be more demand for higher spec chips then the market may become unstable...but with Core 2 prices now falling below £100 and high spec 7000 series Gforce cards on the fall I would expect Dell prices will remain stable when Vista is launched.

I'm with Mike ..Dell have excellent build quality and are built to last.

Quote - Vista capable - under "Good":

'Great for... Booting the Operating System, without running applications or games'

Don't you love MS?

Time to bring this back to focus I think to remind all about the options on Vista from Dell.

When I registered for the upgrade the cost was £11 however my email receipt says £1, be interesting to see what I finally get charged.

Any chance of getting the Vista upgrade at a 'reduced price' if you purchased a Dell 2 months before the qualifying date of the 26th October 2006?

Does anyone know a way round?

I have signed up for this, but my card has changed. I called dell and they said from the 21st there will be a subpage and the website to change any details. Thought I would post this as it may help others in the same situation.

Thanks for adding that info Bryan:thumbsup:

Does the service tag number show on the receipt?

I have now sold the pc I bought lol.

Original Poster Moderator

If you have sold it Zwarder the new owner is entitled to the upgrade, the tag is on the machine base.

I assume its an OEM version of Vista they're offering?

Just got around to doing this.

Upgrade went through for my Dell "Outlet" machine - £11.

bizarre question but could you claim the upgrade then go back to XP at a later date - i dont want the performance to be burdened so would like to see how Vista is on my modest machine and then either stay or revert back to xp since it performs well and is stable.

Is it a one-way road so to speak for the upgrade?

Any thoughts anyone...?

Where do you stand on an outlet machine - which had a german MCE OS installed? Would you get a German Vista or is there a language option you can change at installation?

Can you get it for £11, and then resell it ? Does it have to be a dell box ?

I've got a MCE dell in Jan with upgrade , but I don't want it. Just wondering if I could make a few quid

Original Poster Moderator

dt_matthews we dont know until someone gets the disc and tries, maybe able to dual boot.

simbad I would suggest that they will supply a disc suitable for the country the system was last sold in as they check the tag on each for registration before sending.

datamile it will be a dell specific disc that looks for at least a dell bios before allowing an install

Any ideas when we will receive the upgrade disc, submitted mine a couple of weeks ago now.

I'm having the same difficulty. :-(

Even though I'm not going to upgrade immediately, I wanted to get hold of the media as it was part of the deal.

Perhaps someone is trying to tell us something...;-)

I have a brand new dual core laptop from Dell and have just ran the Microsoft Vista Upgrade Advisor.

Hardware is all good, but interestingly it states that McAfee Security won't work. Dell kindly give a 3 year subscription! Anyone know anything about this?

Actually quite a few programes will have compatability issues:( Why is nothing ever easy.

I had a few compatability warnings coming up, but I am guessing the advisor isn't going to list ALL software, as the file would be to big / complicated.

Ordered this now for £11, so will just have to wait now!

sorry i must be being a real dunce - I just went to the vista upgrade site which then says come back later. do I need to run the upgrade advisor first???

can someone post a link to the page they used to get their upgrade.

thanks

Noel

No, you should be able to get in now as theyre back online. They seem to take the site down every now and again.

Does anyone know when upgrade packs will be shipped? :?

If you insert the upgrade disk whilst your in XP and perform the upgrade, your key will become invalid. There's an article about it ]here.

I must be doing somehting wrong because I have tried the site again (www.dellvistaupgarde.com) and it still says please come back later.

hhheeeeeeeeeeeeellppp

I just completed my details on the dell site and am now waiting for the disk to be sent to me :-D

I'd always recommend doing a Clean Install rather than Upgrading anyway. Just back up all of your files and then install Vista on the formatted hard drive (it will be formatted during the Clean Install process). You then have the option of doing a Clean Install of XP over it, if you want to revert - without the hassle of trying to upgrade/downgrade, hoping that it only overwrites the files you want it to overwrite etc., wondering if your XP key has been invalidated etc.

I did a Clean Install when trying out a Beta copy of Vista on my laptop. Got tired of it after a couple of months and clean-installed XP back over it.

You can't do a clean install with the Upgrade. You can only use the upgrade copy from XP or using the work around method.

I still get:

Please come back later.

Clearly a bizarre use of the word "express"

Upgrade went through for my Dell "Outlet" machine - £11.

I bought a Dimension 9200 from the Dell Outlet for my son in December thinking that because it was from the Outlet I wouldn't be illegible for an upgrade. How wrong I was.

I've just ordered my upgrade to Vista Home Premium for £0.00 + £11.00 shipping.

I do wonder how they can justify charging that amout for shipping though.:x

yeah, one DVD has to be all of 32p to stick in the post!

Does anyone know when they will be sent out?
