I think this is a great price, only about £8 more than the normal USB 2.0 Edition this will support the new superspeed USB 3.0. OK... TO CLARIFY, this is NOT the same as the Currys one on sale at £49.... That is ONLY usb2.0....There is no comparison to be had!

Price update, reduced to 56.85

The black version is available at £50.80

As Brilly said, the one you are talking about is USB 2.0 only this is ready for the new USB 3.0 superspeed, i thought people would vote on this without reading properly, but hopefully to those that do they will benefit!

Isn't this a bit cheaper at curry's?

It's at times like this we need a "dislike this post" button. What a bunch of illiterate numpties!

Sorry, I didn't realise. I did read the OP but thought it was the same one. I've been looking at buying one and I thought it was the same, obviously not!

Voted hot but bear in mind that unless you have USB3 ports on your PC (not many do ATM) it will only run at USB2 speeds, you can of course install a USB3 PCI card in your PC.

Good for future proofing anyway.

if you built your own pc in the last year, many of the motherboards have usb3. most now have usb3 from what I've seen(unless you've gone for the budget ones), been looking at upgrading to i5/i7 from q6600 for ages but not got around to it so might wait till the new intel cpus are out in the coming months(well early next year from what I've read).

er.. cheaper at currys! fail.

lol joke!

nice price voted hot

Now 80p less! Was 57.65, now showing as 56.85

cold cheaper at currys ( )

voted hot, cracking deal and usb3 is pretty much becoming standard now.

easy mistake to make however thinking it was the same as the old one, the 1st responder was only trying to help.

I just wish i could get it, am having a usb HDD got for me for xmas but i cant really ask her to pay more than 35 quid so will have to make do with a 250gb usb 2.0

Just updated the price thanks

i bought a 1TB one of these in the US (in Black for about £70) This is hot and voted so by the way.

Good find, I didn't think the USB 3.0 versions were out yet (voted hot!)

That would explain why Currys are selling their current USB 2.0 stock off.

Got one of these and it's nearly 3X faster at reading and writing than my USB 2 2.5in hard disk! IMHO it's worth buying one of the USB 3 PCI-E cards if you're motherboard doesn't have USB 3 support. The speed increase is awesome.

Agreed USB 3 is a good speed bump, lots of discounts on all usb 2 drives currently, so expect lots and lots of usb 3 versions in early 2011. Maybe even some 3TB 3.5" external drives as well.

Thanks. Just what I needed now that I have the USB 3 port on the XPS 15.

WTF what kind of statement is that? You on crack?

The WD MyBook 3TB USB 3.0 version should be available just before Xmas. Probably about £150, though.

Great to see a drive faster than usb 2 for a change

However, it is not currently supported by intel, so if your laptop has usb 3.0, it will be by way of a third-party chipset.

Intel are going to launch their own Light Peak technology over the next few months and not support usb 3.0 in laptops (desktop yes) until sometime in 2012. Seems like they are sneakily trying to postpone usb 3.0 while they get LP established.

Except that Intel is also responsible for usb 3.0. Problem with Light Peak is that it requires optical cables, which are more fragile and expensive than copper cables. Can't see a rush for Light Peak keyboards and mice, so Intel might as well get on the usb 3.0 bus anyway.

Phew lol

I think usb 3 will be standard in 2011 usb has too much history behind it now to do away with it, plus its already very cheap, my pc usb 3 upgrade card was only 12 quid, lightpeak ain't going to be that cheap

black version is back to £64.99 - just when I was about to buy it

Original Poster

yeh i know. the blue and silver i think are still around the £56 price mark

just got the blue one, hope it will come before weekend

Black is back to £50.90 again

Just bought the red one in comet for £49.99. Stock is a bit thin so you'll have to check the situation at your local store online. And yes it is the USB3.0 variant (WDBACY5000Axx). Other colours are £59.99.

Got mine today and it is reading and writing a 7GB ISO file at an average of 60-70MB/s on USB 3.0 on my Dell XPS 15. Very pleased with it, and it's the smallest USB drive I've seen.

Now that USB 3.0 is becoming established, can we get back onto the debate about the pros and cons of 2.5" versus 3.5", 5400rpm versus 7200rpm and mechancical drive versus SSD. I missed those arguments when USB 2.0 was the bottleneck.

My board just missed the roll out of USB 3.0, so I'll probably skip this generation and hang on till USB 4.0 and neural implants become standard. It's a bit like those moaning about 3D and having to wear glasses, they'd rather get a Matrix style spike in the back of their head.
