Truly plug & play sound (tested on 3 linux computers)

- Extra sound output (great for using Skype with headphones while using another sound card for music on speakers)

- Good sound quality for its price

Cons: - As well as in other reviews, the microphone in is not too good (was not planning on buying it for this)

Voted lukewarm as Deal Extreme are only any good if your goods turn up (which 90% of the time they do), if they don't or they're damaged then they simply couldn't care less. Sorry, I won't deal with them any more.

I had a damaged keyring and they sent a replacement no problem. Maybe they've got too popular now.

Any idea if these would be any good to use for a second sound card on a laptop for mixing?

Deal extreme are a good company but the 1 to 3 working days will actually take around 10 to 14 days to arrive at your house, but what do you expect for the money

Dealextreme are reliable in execution. Transactions could take 2/3 weeks as they are shipped from HK. They will send the orders in parts if they don't have them in stock.
They sent me 3 lightguns for my last order when I ordered 2. I wanted to return the extra gun but the posting, refunding etc would have taken too much time.

- Transforms analog sound signals to digital?

I don't understand, it doesn't look like the unit has an optical out.
This could potentially be really useful as all my laptop audio outputs are foolishly placed at the front of the chassis. Mildly concerned about the volume issues as the audio is eventually going to end up on my expensive hi-fi equipment and I don't want to damage them.

I bought one exactly the same but off ebay. Although it worked as stated, the audio it produced sounded like it had been badly amplified by the device and produced distortion.

My experience with DX has been good so far, but you to be patient with delivery from Hong Kong. 1-2 weeks is probably the norm.

Back to the product. I have one used it for about 4 months no. its ok, for a usb sound card and for that price your can't complain, BUT (there is always a but) you can't control the sound via the master control, at least that's my experience on Vista. So you decide....

Optical is not the same as digital. Optical is just a means of transporting information, just as a piece of wire is, but in practical terms what this does is take an analogue signal on a piece of wire and transform it into a digital signal to the USB port, and vice versa.

Why do all DX's deals become a place where everyone debates on whether they're reliable or not?

Boring ...

I agree this is misleading as when you read 'analogue to digital' for an audio device, you expect spdif. Your definition, however, is not entirely true. Optical IS digital as it is the pulsing of light (ON/OFF) down a fibre.

you'd have to be pretty desperate to get one of these. Spend a little more on an external sound card .. only about a tenner on ebuyer.

It's cheap, but as people have reported, so is the sound!

No, you can send analogue signals down an optical fibre if you want - think endoscope. :-D

I also bought one off ebay. It worked at a superficial level but the audio quality was unacceptable by any measure.

I spent substantially more money on a German product which used decent chips sets and the product worked exceptionally well.

If I saw a bucket full of these being offered for free, I wouldn't even bend down to pick one up.

No it isn't. It converts analogue audio signals into digital signals that your PC can understand via the USB port. To do that it contains an Analogue to Digital converter. It mentions nothing of SPDIF so you have no reason to assume one. Therefore the description that it "Transforms analog sound signals to digital" is entirely correct.

Wrong again. "optical" is only the method of transmission, using light over fibre instead of electrons over wire. It has nothing to do with the type of encoding. Just like electrical transmission, optical signals can be analogue or digital. Otherwise how you see?

Fair comment about the optical being a transmission medium.

But to describe an external sound card that "converts analogue sound signal to digital" in reference to a mic input is misleading no matter which way you look at it since it's stating the bleeding obvious!

Because those of us who have been stung are trying to warn others by telling them of our experiences - caveat emptor.

No, it's stating exactly what it does (albiet at low quality). That's what a product description is for. Which is the opposite of being misleading.

It's you that for some reason is expecting them to include full Digital Optical In/Out, on a device costing 2 quid (delivered) when they don't say anything of the kind.
It doesn't say it takes audio in one end and squirts Optical or Coaxial SPDIF signals out the other. It doesn't even say it has SPDIF connectors.
In case some lunatic thinks it has (for 2 quid, remember), they give you close up pics from every angle so you can see there isn't a TOSlink or Coax connecter in sight.

So what does it do? It takes analogue audio signals in at one end and adapts it to a USB data signal on the other. And converts digital USB signals from your PC to analogue sounds in your speakers or headphones.
Converting Analogue to Digital and Digital to Analogue.
Sound to USB, USB to Sound.
In fact, you could almost call it a USB Sound adapter.
That costs 2 quid, delivered, worldwide.
I dont think that's misleading, or that it's DX who's being a little unreasonable here.

Can this be used as a substitute for the usb dongle for the mics on Singstar for the PS2? My kids have lost theirs.

I got three light guns too , buy 2 and the third was free. You wern't seriously wanting to send one back ?

Could be useful for people who have laptops with awkwardly placed audio out/headphone ports... namely the front.
