"Scratches on front of item (less than 3.5 cm. x 3.5 cm.). Small scratches on sides of item (less than 0.6 cm. x 0.6 cm.). Item has been tested and is fully functional. Item will come in original packaging"

no expert on the lens, however Amazon tend to state the "scratches ...." and most items come perfect. Iv had many used items delivered and they look immaculate.

The cheapest I can find brand new is £869 at E-finity: -

At the Amazon price I'm tempted. Surprisingly scratches, even on the glass, usually doesn't reduce the quality of the photograph.
I can buy one to to try and return it if there's a problem. As well as checking the glass I would also look at for the smooth travel of the zoom and the speed and accuracy of the autofocus over the range.
Heat added, thanks.

It's really just a coverall statement I've found. As said, most of the time the item is perfect or close to it with damaged packaging only. That said I've had a few duff items but it's been no problem to return them.

A scratch over an inch long on the front glass element will affect the final image, especially when shooting against or into the light. Depending how deep the scratch is, I would'nt chance it IMHO.

I think they mean the packaging is damaged rather than the product itself. I've had warehouse deals before and the box has been ruined. the item has been fine.

scratch could be on the lens cap perhaps??
