Android 4.4 is fine for apps so I would ignore the above comment.
And as we know, apps that work are best not updated.

Hiw do the RK3229 boxes compare to the S905X and the like?
I get this device hardware may well support 4k data throughputs, but with so many compression formats for video/audio it's never that straight forward in my experience. What's the status of HDR and Android these days?

I'm getting fed up of the mess of apps that don't support 4k or HDR on certain platforms.
Some content plays direct on the LG OLED WebOS platform, some works on PS4 Pro, some works on AppleTV.
I've yet to find any official YouTube app on any platform that plays YouTube 4K HDR despite it apparently having such content.

I don't really want to spend so much on one of these hallowed Steam Machines which seem to be the bees knees nowadays.
If you are buying this for Netflix in HD, please check the relevant DRM certifications on it. Netflix will deliver an SD stream to any device lacking Widevine L1 and HDCP 2.2, no matter the hardware spec. Very few Chinese boxes qualify.
Only downside is Android 6.x. Soon many app will stop working on this version I believe. So this may last upto a year or so.

Kodi 17.6 may not work on 4.4 would need older version or FTMC.
6.0 will be good for long time yet.

I've used this model with only 1gb ram for IPTV and runs fine. It's more to do with your broadband connection than an Android box for a good experiance.

Have to say my Amlogic S905 runs like a dog in general. I can get by with it but wouldn't buy another of this particular type.

I wanted one for Broadlink and Alexa support. Wondering if it will work smoothly
These are cheap for a reason, this review would put me right off albeit not the plus version but same chip and manufacturer

I did plump for one of the op's earlier deals i.e. a Tanix MX3 mini which suffered serious frame drop, crazy buffering (even though I edited the advancedsettings.xml file in Kodi) and weird communication errors (ethernet & WiFi) which required frequent restarts. I even tried LibreElec and also 2 manufacturer firmware updates but the box still ran like a dog, that is until the power supply packed up 3 weeks in!

Best thing I can say about this deal is it's a UK seller so you might not have to completely write off your £20 if its a dog

I've now got an Octa Core box, 3gb amlogic S912, 32gb Rom, Bluetooth, dual band WiFi and gigabit Ethernet. It runs like a dream and cost me £37 fulfilled by Amazon.

I was gonna post it on here but since I've been testing it it's gone up to £49.99. There are still some keenly priced S912's on there, worth a look.

I have an X99 box. It doesn’t work well with Broadlink and Alexa, fails to many commands.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I too bought the Tanix T3 Mini for about £20. I have updated it with the new firmware and the dual boot option (to Librelec), It works fine for me. I use it for Kodi and IPTV. NordVPN is on there plus various other apps. It is definitely the luck of the draw when buying these cheap Chinese boxes. I bought on the basis that I could afford to lose £20 but so far, so good.

You're probably right in fact if you do a bit of delving plenty of people unhappy with certain aspects Nvidia Shield's. I thought the Tanix was worth a punt (of course) but not sure about this. Low end Rockchips are generally viewed as worse than low end Amlogic with less support for Kodi or LibreElec.

I enjoyed tinkering with the Tanix, may even have a revisit to see if its running hot as many of these boxes seemed to be plagued with overheating.

If I was less inclined to tinker or put up with bugs I'd probably opt for a Fire TV (box)
BT Sport app works well on this type of box.

I'm not sure, perhaps they were relying on early adopters to buy at a cheap price to generate a bit of customer feedback. Seems to me that as a product gets more popular on Amazon the price often goes up.

This is the nearest reasonably priced that I can see amazon.co.uk/gp/…rch

Sometimes I take a chance on Amazon items with low feedback scores especially if there's only been a few respondents as a couple of low scores really skew the overall feedback yet those might be just unlucky customers. You can easily return poor quality stuff or obviously keep if you've got a good one. It's a bit of a lottery.

I bought a 100 watt led floodlight from a Hong Kong seller fulfilled by Amazon. The first had a faulty pir, the second f.o.c. unit failed completely within 2 months. Even though I ultimately got a full refund I wasted my time installing these lights doomed to failure so lessoned learned. At least through Amazon though you can take a punt on Far Eastern suppliers and still get a refund. Buying from Banggood/Gearbest etc is inherently more risky.

Formuler Z7+
I got this box at the cheap price two weeks ago and it does everything I need quite well. Terrarium tv and Redbox tv work well and cover football movies and er TV! ... I've just ordered a mini wireless keyboard and mouse for a fiver to raise the bar even higher
Thanks OP... ordered!!!
Mine has got this bug whereby you can't shut it down properly, it just boots up again. I was surprised to find that it has bluetooth though.
