I got a message saying my comment was deleted and i should keep future comments on topic, and be courteous!

My explanation was on topic, as it explained why a 16% reduction and not 20% and as i'm a VAT Accountant i believe i am well placed to explain it, and i was not discourteous in any way. What a joke

Apart from all the arguing about how much VAT is what! It's all a misnomer anyways.

Debenhams can't not pay VAT on the goods. What they are really doing is dropping the price by 16%.

If the perfume cost £10 net of VAT they would charge the customer £12 adding the £2 to there VAT return. Selling the perfume at the no VAT rate means you, the customer, pay £10 but Debenhams still have to pay VAT on the item so will add £1.67 to the VAT return and you will be buying it at a net value of £8.33.

Cl;ear as mud ey
As a retailer Debenhams can't not charge VAT to it's UK customers no matter what the promotion says.
Aaaanyways who cares... Really the deal is about a saving off fragrance not a debate over your beliefs of vat!

yep 100% agreed, i know some of mine were a bit cheeky so ofc some sensitive fellows could have taken issue but not all were and yours certainly wasn't
And my comment was literally just a link about the flat rate scheme ... Sorry that that offended you all!

Shame they don't do a lot of stuff.
Not bad! But, even better if you have a family/friend working in an airport for the duty free, lol. Especially every 5 months or so they have staff sales which you get perfume/aftershave/sets dirt cheap
HMRC will now be after Debenhams as they HAVE to charge VAT. The original post is misleading as it should show 16.67% off and NOT mention VAT at all. If they are, it is illegal and Debenhams face a MASSIVE fine! COOLING ADDED DUE TO MISLEADING POST !!!

lol @ misleading
debenhams say 'vat free prices' not that there actually is no vat
if you want to post about legality then you should be in each of the chinese import theads with either tax dodging or counterfeit crap
Tax evasion vat is 20% you dufuss

Tax evasion vat is 20% you dufuss

No, VAT is Value ADDED tax. 100% of the price plus 20%.
If you take the price plus VAT to be 100% and then remove the tax it works out at 16.6%
Oh god. Stop. We've gone full circle on this... Loads of comments about this got deleted earlier. Stopppp!!!

They will tell you not, but when you buy the same item from somewhere like Boots/House of fraser/Debenhams, then compare that with these online efforts like Fragrance Shop etc, you will soon realise. Take Chanel Bleu (same edt), bought from online fragrance place, longevity of smell less than 1 hour, bought from Debenhams, lasted all day... Nuff Said

Had a quick look and Debenhams prices are always marked higher than everyone else to begin with. Pays for the staff and the stores etc.
Most perfumes out of stock
