Vax U90-MA-R Air Reach Upright Vacuum Cleaner + 6 years guaruntee included £99.99 at John Lewis

We were looking for a replacement for our Dyson upright cleaner which is now pushing dirt around the carpet rather than sucking it up! This vacuum has been available for this price at other retailers including Argos and Amazon, but now available at John Lewis and includes a 6 year guarantee!

Is it a Dyson or a Miele? NO - but it does have some excellent reviews and at just a snippet of the price complete with a 6 year guarantee and from good old john Lewis, I thought others may agree it is worth a second look.

This cleaner already has a 6-year warranty with Vax?

Just read the reviews on this machine and they are all positive! been looking for one for a while and at this price and with a guarantee will not be letting it go! thank you very much OP!!!

How often do you need to change the filters?

Reviews are broadly positive. Free returns, 6 year warranty (reviews report split hoses etc are dealt with promptly) a few minor niggles about the 0845 number for customer support.

Good retailer, free delivery (and returns), 6 year warranty. Heat. Ordered

Just found a local number you can ring for Vax 01905 795959. Apparantley they have a HEPA filter??? About to ring and ask about it, if it's like the dyson one where you can wash and use again then it's defo the go ahead....never thought about the filter so thanks djdope for the reminder!

Sounds like a bargain for £99! Amazon have price matched so there's another way of getting it for £99

have a vax performance pet and i must say its been brilliant so highly recomend a vax to those who are looking at leaving Dyson, far cheaper and its amazing how much it picks up.

We have the vax air3 pet same style as this and it is brilliant.we had Dyson before but the vax is better.

Onto my second Vax hoover in 6 months, the first one suffered a complete loss of suction, the second one broke within a month because the hose fell apart, under no stress at all. Build quality is appalling - also, if your model breaks for some reason, you're likely to be sent a lesser model as a replacement. Their customer service is a joke, they take days to respond to emails and are pretty poor at telephone support - been trying to sort mine out for a couple of weeks now without any positive movement, next step is Trading Standards. YMMV.

EDIT: in fact, looking at the product, that's the model I was sent as a replacement for my original model. The hose appears to have been made out of paper, it will fall to pieces with little provocation.

I have one of these. For £99 (you can usually get them around the £125 mark) its a good hoover and if you take into account the 6 year warranty then its a bonus. Not perfect though - main niggle is that it doesn't take long to clog the cyclone so you have to empty everytime. Other niggle is that the long reach hose "unscrews" from the connector and you frequently have to re-attach. Plus side is that its very light and compact and the suction is good and the turbo brush (not sure if this one comes with the turbo brush) is excellent for the stairs.

I know people will say its not as good as a Dyson but it is a fraction of the price and if you read the reviews on Amazon there are several reviewers saying it is better than their Dysons....

My experience is the complete opposite. I have this cleaner and it's as good as the first day I had it. If there's loss off suction it's usually down to the filters being full and needing cleaning out.
Their warranty support has always been top draw as well. They've replaced a steam cleaner twice, and the second time told me to just keep the other one, even though it has just suffered some cosmetic damage.

Their cheaper range of cleaners are complete crap, but once you pay a little more they are really not too far off Dyson, except for the cheaper quality plastic and components.

Vax's warranty service is probably the best I've ever come across...

Cold as this has no extended Jon Lewis guarantee and its £99.99 at argos and amazon and it has been for months
Edited by: "dodgymix" 24th Apr 2013

I've had this cleaner for a few years now, the first one lasted about 3 years and went kaput, Vax automatically sent me a new one. Would definatly recommend, suction is great and picks up everything, very light weight aswell.

Wow, you really are pathetic. For starters it's £249 in Argos: argos.co.uk/sta…htm

Secondly, so by this deal being EQUAL cheapest to Amazon, that makes it a cold deal? Get a life.

I have this hoover and can confirm that the HEPA filter IS washable and reusable.

Maybe not such a hot deal. I just bought one of these from Argos for £99 last week. It broke after 5 minutes with the brush motor failing. When I phoned Vax, they told me that the RRP is now £99. Got it replaced at Argos and working fine since. Great hoover though, just hope it lasts!

Thanks Waterboy8535. Spoke to Vax earlier on, they said if anything would happen and it just needed a part exchanging they'd post it out (whereas with Dyson they tend to come out, had my vac rewired, new motor put in, new brush, new belt over the last 4 years) but thats no problem with me so long as it comes with some instructions. If its something complex th ,. ..

FYI the Hepa filters on Dyson units are paper: Non washable. I've had to replace them on 2 or 3 DC07 and DC14s.

Ordered JL customer service was first rate even on the order (had a card declined due to fraud) 30s call from JL all sorted!

then they will send out an engineer. If they can not fix it they will replace it. Vax are also selling it for the same price so I just ordered it from there. Overall looks very good.

Yes you can take it out and wash it. I bought this from Argos a few weeks ago for the same price. Lightweight and powerful.

this is not 100% correct. I have DC25 and that is washable. They even have an email reminder system that reminds you to wash them.
QUOTE from DYSON product description
"Dyson vacuum cleaners don't need bags and have lifetime washable filters, so there are no extra costs to worry about."

In relation to this deal it is brilliant. I just ordered my brother one off amazon and seems to be as good as my Dyson DC25

Edited by: "nickelarse" 24th Apr 2013

Great vacuum. Lightweight, powerful and easy to use.

As someone has already mentioned, you have to remove the hose from the base to use attachments, which is mildly annoying but not really an issue.

No idea about Dyson, i was commenting that this Vax model has washable filters

Got one a few weeks at Argos (same Price) works fine, pleased with it. good price not worth £200

I don't think you can beat a Henry vacuum for £99. It's why all shops, offices and builders use them. They are great, especially with the add-on turbo brush.

Got one last week with the Argos deal. Perfect for a small house, and the amount of crap this thing pulled up vs my old vax (cylinder type without beater brush) was astonishing. And to think, I'd let my baby crawl around for a year with that dirt in the carpet!

My personal decision if I think a deals hot or not.. If I think a deal is cold I give a reason unlike the vast majority on here.

These were£99.99 in argos yesterday as I commented on the third amazon deal in as many months.. Add in the vax website and this seems to be the normal price for this vax... Ie cold

Whos pathetic.. I gave a factual reply..

Have got this ourselves, great price and was previously a dyson household but am impressed with suction of vax reach, although as per previous comment have had hose unscrew but not a deal breaker as long as you know how to screw it back in its not an issue every once in a while, might get some glue on it to cure it, great price great find

Ok I have purchased this model of Vax and have a Dyson DC14, DC07, DC24 NONE of these models have a washable HEPA filter. All have washable pre-motor dust filter. The post-motor HEPA filters are all made of card (on the Dyson and the VAX) they are described as "lifetime HEPA filters" by Dyson. I've had to replace all of these on my Dysons as they fill up with 1) The carbon particles from the motor brushes 2) fine dust emitted by the cyclone when then weight of air borne particulates is so high that the orbital speed of the air flow is insifficent to filter out the particles - This happens when vacuuming up plaster dust with a cyclonic cleaner and there is so much dust (from the rock in the plaster) that the energy from the air drawn through the cyclone is not enough to spin the air fast enough (due to the weight of the rock). This seen by fine plaster dust passing right through the cyclone chamber into the motor and clogging the post motor HEPA filter. Lesson do not use Cyclinic cleaners (any make) with building dust as the cement and plaster will create the lost of rotational spin in the air. A conventional vacuum cleaner like Mr Henry is fine for builders dust!

In normal use the HEPA filter on these Vax units should not need changing for 5 to 7 years at least. The Dyson's have very high quality motors (though lost of the DC07 had faulty thermal cutouts that cause them to stop running after a few minutes - £4 spare on EBay can fix this - Shame on Dyson for using a faulty part and not replacing these under warranty) Also the air flow on the older Dyson's is high so this will balance off the better quality motor compared to the Vax

I'm impressed with the Vax only used it a few times

Pros
-Price and 6 year warranty (would like to hear from folk that have had to claim on this - What went wrong and what the service was like)
-Build seems ok, only used it once.
-2 Electric motors 1) for the cyclone 2) for the brush bar (Like the DC24)
-Brush bar motor has current sensor to detect a Jam (Dyson do not have this!!)
-Turbine Brush
-Cover comes of the turbine brush to unblock!
-Considering the price differential between this and the DC24 (this is much better than the DC24 as it has a long cable / hose the DC24 is like a toy!)
-Quiet in operation (for a cyclone)
-Air Motor sounds good quality no rattles or bearing noise.
-Brush motor sounds quiet and is electronically controlled
-Pre-Motor dust filter (the one that gets clogged under normal user) is washable and easy to clean
-Post Motor Hepa is cardboard (like all Dysons) and easy to replace if needed (not sure on the cost)
-This is likely to be a VERY popular unit so spares and parts should become cheaper as third parties offer parts.
-Dual filter set (Original VAX) both pre and post filters are £12.95 delivered on Ebay Item # 380630284850 and Vax have an online store. £30 on Amazon!
-Spare parts look cheap spares.vax.co.uk/upr…ght
Cons
-(Minor) Cable is long (great!) but coiling it up is at the limit of what the unit can take, still useable but the cable I have has a few kinks. Perhaps due to packing. Likely this will improve over time. Would like to hear from owners who have had the unit for a longer.
-(Minor)No storage for the turbine brush

Got mine yesterday afternoon, was pleased with it myself, it's very light to use, good suction and I wasn't aware that it could pick of hard floors so that's an added bonus. Mum came yesterday to have a nosy and I've ordered her one as well as she likes the idea of it not only being light but the fact that it has 6 years guarantee. 'Tank' is small but can't grumble at that price.
