Veggie burger and fries £1.99 @ McDonald's (Alternative items for Big Mac deal)

Posted 4th May
I'm aware that most people are aware that if you do the online survey on your receipt you can get a code to get a big Mac and fries for £1.99

But recently I asked if you can have a alternative and I was offered a chicken sandwich or veggie burger.
I was never offered this before so I imagine this will vary from location.
So at least vegetarians might get a look in at McDonald's also.

Especially when they were cooked in the same fat as the chicken nuggets.

It actually says on the McD food for thoughts webpage that a vegetarian alternative is available so sounds like your local McD are in the wrong...

Was never their target market, but they are now jumping on the veggie / vegan bandwagon that has sprung-up out of nowhere; not sure why now, but it is what it is.

Quite possibly, I just really liked the bean burger, didn't give a hoot if it was cooked with chicken saturated fat

Wasn’t that at Burger King? Always preferred that apart from the soggy limp buns.

I have been getting the veggie alternative for all forms of McDonald’s vouchers for years.

Not back in the day.
I'm not a vegetarian but do take up the £1.99 trick from time to time.

Didn't know this so thanks O/P, will try it for something different.
McDonalds is not for rabbit food, if you want to eat grass, go to the park

Yeah it was in the same as Apple Pie and whatever side they sell (Cheese Dippers/Onion Rings). But because they share a filter box they couldn't get vegetarian society approved.

Then when they moved it to be cooked in the fry vats, that had to change the recipe because of the different oil temperatures.
The old patty was far superior and I even prefer the 2nd VSA patty to the new "goujons".

That's good, I wish I read this ages ago. Nearly all franchises also accept blue light card, I wonder if that is supposed to be national also ?
Been getting the veggie option for a few years now - but yes some people might not be aware you can do that, so good you posted. Thanks
I live the veggie burgers but sometimes they give it overcooked and it becomes very hard
Cold. McDonald's is never worth eating - basically paying to get heart disease.
my local lets you choose from Big Mac, Chicken burger, Fish burger, veggie burger or a double Cheeseburger with large fries.

I wouldn't have thought any Blue Light card promo was national as it's an external promotion and some McD's are franchises, whereas the Food for thoughts is their own own promo. Out of interest though what is the offer with the Blue Light card? Couldn't see anything on the Blue Light card website about McD

Aha. They are cooked in separately yes, however it all depends on the staff. Whether they can be bothered to, and also use seperate baskets.

It depends weather its an official Maccies store, or a franchised store. Franchised stores are allowed leeway with the menu

But you could say that about any organisation that offers meat and vegetarian products. Staff can break the rules anywhere so if meat (or nuts, diary, gluten etc..) is something you want to avoid, the only way to do so is to DIY.

Do they still do the Cheese Salad Roll - used to be a non-menu item available on request when I worked there donkeys years ago.

Basically same price as Cheeseburger - roll, cheese slice, lettuce, onion with sauce on request.

Just wondered.
In 1989 McDonald's in Orlando were advertising a meat free burger. In those days you also had a free salad bar similar to pizza hut today.I had to take it back because it had no burger in the bap. The guy said it's meat free - help yourself to salad. So I returned it for a normal burger because it was the same price. Americans back then thought vegetarians just had the same food plate of food minus the steak or burger!!

They were great! And very substantial too - excellent value for money.

Separate oil but filtered through the same filter, many times a day. Over the course of the 2-3 days that the oil is kept (depending how busy it was), it will have had large amount of chicken/fish contaminated oil.

It’s only relatively recently (5 years ago ish) they started cooking them in the separate vats they use for fries. Was around the same time they stopped salting the fish filet. I miss working there sometimes
And vegans will complain because it’s cooked on the same grill

Can second this as correct.

Correct. McDonald's do not give vegetarian guarantee as the oil is filtered with the non veg oil.
