I had one years ago and it was slow then (think it only does 100Mbit LAN connection) as the CPU/memory combination were hopelessly underpowered, there were no firmware updates and very basic services (UPnP, SMB and FTP was about it from memory). The worst problem by far though was that it would randomly hang and need to be factory reset (hence looking for firmware updates) - this is a product to avoid!

I use an old ex corporate HP small desktop pc for a server, dirt cheap to buy on ebay, there is space for three drives in the one I am using and it's much easier to configure than most NAS enclosures and totally reliable, I have been using one for years, I have just upgraded the drives to two 4TB Seagate IronWolf's.

It's a very basic NAS, you'd probable be better off buying a larger portable hard drive for less money and plugging into the back of your router (presuming you have a USB port, most do nowadays).

Yes, that would have been prefect for my needs. Unfortunately I have one of those grim NowTV routers.

Although I don't know much about NAS setups it can't be that bad for a basic rig as a movie streamer? Should be cheap to run as well all being well.
