In a nutshell, USB 3.0 promises the following:

* Higher transfer rates (up to 4.8Gbps) 10x faster theoretically
* Increased maximum bus power and increased device current draw to better accommodate power-hungry devices
* New power management features
* Full-duplex data transfers and support for new transfer types
* New connectors and cables for higher speed data transfer...although they are backwards compatible with USB 2.0 devices and computers (more on this later)

Okay its a lot faster meaning transfers are faster. You still need a usb 3 controller though otherwise it will be usb 2 speeds. Newer motherboards have this. Ut would amke backups a lot less painful

It would also be useful for media streamers that require high throughput such as playing blu ray files. Sometimes usb2 cannot cope.

I have this drive and a USB 3.0 motherboard and as 999tigger says, huge backups are so easy to do.

Cheers budds.

Are these hard-drives reliable?

I paid £90 for 2TB WD My Book 3.0.

No advantage for me as eSATA isn't obsolete just yet :-)

I also lolled.

Appreciate that it is faster but is it noticeably faster on a standard computer system? What applications will show 3.0 at it's best or is this future proofing? Media centre, WDTV etc?

Is it worth the extra money over standard USB2 at this point in time?

are these drives faster than a normal internal sata drive ?

Voted hot.

are these drives faster than a normal internal sata drive ?

No. These are normal internal SATA drives but with a SATA to USB adaptor built into the casing, and SATA isn't anywhere near being saturated by mechanical harddrives anyway.

In practice you will notice 4 times the speed (might need to add a USB 3 card to your PC) otherwise it will drop to usb 2 speeds

for a 2TB drive that's not a bad price, it is good to finally see USB 3.0 devices coming down to a sensible price, i have seen these listed as discontinued at a couple of places, but i don't know if that's a case of those places rotating stock or if they are due to be replaced by a newer model.

Wonder who makes the drives that are in these

Nowt unless your PC is equipped with USB3 ports or you fit a USB3 card, however USB3 will soon become the norm so buying this now will mean you are future proofed (until they introduce USB4 Lol)

It is a good price for a 2Tb USB3 external though. Hot.

Probably a slight blip up for VAT increase, still a great price currently in my humble opinion - I bought mine at £110 a few weeks ago after it had dropped from £120

This USB 3.0 one now nearly the same price as the equivalent 2TB USB 2.0 one on Amazon
