Revised March 2015 - please bear this in mind. Despite being 5 years old, the way it explains VAT still appears to be very relevant.

Of all the UK's myriad taxes, VAT is one that affects us all, but as a small business owner it causes a great deal of uncertainty. When, if at all, should you register for VAT? How do you charge and collect VAT? What do you actually have to pay to HMRC? And what happens if you're making sales, or buying supplies, from outside the UK?
In this new e-book, her third, Emily Coltman ACA, one of the UK's foremost small business accountants, answers all these questions and many more, in the plain, simple English we have come to expect from her work.

The great thing about what Emily writes is not only is it essential sound advice in key accounting needs but also it makes perfect sense and is simple for those who wish for clarity and no jargon.

I love them, weird I know. I am an Accountant so it is allowed
I don’t have a small business but this looks like so much fun I might just download it anyway
Taking over the family business soon, this may come in handy

There is indeed VAT on digital books. However, this was announced in the March budget that it will be abolished later this year. This is free so no VAT

Summary of the book, it’s 20% for most things but not all, get your accountant to do the work for you

Foreword by Jimmy Carr
Top top- pay your latest return...there are only charges on non payment of the most recent return. If you are in arrears make an arrangement to pay that off gradually, but always pay the latest as priority.

It was apparently fast-tracked and already happened so there is already no VAT on ebooks.
