That word makes me shiver. It's knickers, people. Always knickers.

Thanks, but where's the men's free alternative?

Just take away the 'ia' for Victor's panties
Panty ... is it just the one leg then?
Nobody has posted 'that's the mother-in-laws present sorted'.
How disappointing

Ed Winchester, the great American, wants to use the word 'knickers'?

Whatever next....?
Wooohhh...can’t wait to get m..erm..panty... in my house we call them knickers, drawers, breaks, undies, ...all plurals you’ll notice . My singular panty (which will be had for free) will take pride of place in my knicker drawer

Which is a contraction of the British word pantaloon, itself derived from the French term pantalon. I love etymology.

The word knickers when used to describe women's undergarments doesn't make sense as it's a contraction of the word knickerbockers. Knickerbockers where worn by men. Same as panties - as that's a contraction of pantaloon, again another male form of trouser. Womens undergarments at that time where (wear!) referred to as drawers...
It's interesting (to me anyway) that the word Knickerbockers comes from an illustration by Diedrich Knickerbocker. Also another term for womens undergarments was the Bloomer - this came from Amelia Bloomer who promoted the womens trouser...
I love talking pants - why do these topics never come up on the pub quiz night?

I guess it depends what part of the world you are in - in the UK a pair of knickers is the correct term as they where worn one per leg (yes they were normally worn open between the legs). Panty is an American term and the word panty or panties never replaced the British word for knickers, also the term "a pair of pants" should not be used as they weren't worn the same way as knickers (one per leg), so you didn't need a pair of pants, just one will do...
