A chef friend bought us a Victorinox set as a wedding present and they've been very well used - and kept sharp. Outlasted several steels now - 33 years and the only problem is one of the Rosewood handles warping slightly. Deal? No idea. Victorinox gets a tick from me though.

Voted hot, these should last a lifetime.
The three small ones can be bought for about £12. £40 is quite a lot for a non forged moulded handle chef and bread knife, although if they are going in the dishwasher Sabatier type knives will soon get ruined so if you're not going to take care of them get these.
Also have them and great knives. That tomato knife is lethal!!!

Just wondering what they were actually designed for

Hahahaha. I meant not really for commercial kitchen
Victorinox produces some very decent knives and are of much better value compared to the other more "high end" brands. If you give them proper care and avoid using "sharpeners", they should last you quite a while.

blades look good, but handles a bit cheap....

...can I come to one of your parties?
The problem with knife sets is you usually only use two of them. My kitchen drawer if full of unused big ones. And NEVER a good bread knife.
Got a full set of these knives, regretted purchase really as they blunt quite a bit quicker than the Zwilling ones I'm slowly replacing them with. Even some Sainsbury's own brand ones that they replaced were a harder steel.

My good bread knife is my cheap flimsy one I got as part of a block set that was free with Esso tiger tokens about 30 years ago.
I got a good quality set of knives a couple of years ago and the bread knife, although sharp and has a quality feel, doesn't cut bread cleanly.

You must be using it wrong using a sharper knife will cut you less. You are more likely to injure yourself with a less sharp knife due to the blade slipping
Not one comment about on-line knife sales!
For a five knife post!

So unfair!
