Cheapest I've seen yet for an excellent book, and/or highly effective doorstop. ///

Vietnam became the Western world’s most divisive modern conflict, precipitating a battlefield humiliation for France in 1954, then a vastly greater one for the United States in 1975. Max Hastings has spent the past three years interviewing scores of participants on both sides, as well as researching a multitude of American and Vietnamese documents and memoirs, to create an epic narrative of an epic struggle.

Just finished watching a fantastic 10 part documentary series on the war, …Just finished watching a fantastic 10 part documentary series on the war, on PBS Channel

The Ken Burns and Lynn Novick documentary? If so, also on Netflix for anyone who is interested. One of the best historical documentaries I've ever seen. The scope of it is fantastic, it covers so much of the geopolitics and the scene at the time, while also giving you small human details, the pictures that make up the big picture.

I wonder if the book mentions the Gulf of Tonkin false flag, probably not even though it has been proven

Tonkin wasn't the first time either. They started a war against Spain by blowing up one of their own ships. Very relevant in 2019 especially with regard to Iran. And we want to get closer to these people? We must need our head examining!

yeah Joe! False flags are all too common nowadays, regarding Iran I think the oil tanker stuff is small fry compared to what is coming, Iran will be blamed for something big and it will lead to another war(for Israel) imo very sad but the writing is on the wall.
people have been indoctrinated to think that false flags are just crazy 'conspiracy theorist' fodder

Agree, fantastic documentary series. If you like their work, The West and The Civil War series are also great.

How soon before someone writes the book about the unwinnable Brexit, the unwise action prompted by false claims of EU agression?

Now there's a loaded question.
Max Hastings is a well regarded historian and journalist, so if he writes a book encompassing the conflict it would be surprising if he doesn't discuss the origins of the conflict. Why don't you read it and report back?
Anyone know if the paperback cost will affect the Kindle version price - is it likely to drop in the next few days?

Hey @tenohfive - in my experience, looked at the other way around, Kindle "deal of the day"s don't have much of an impact on paperback prices. So I wouldn't assume a price drop on Kindle will follow... but it might!

Of course, you can always finish the paperback (700+ pages) and give it to a friend or to a charity shop... which isn't so easy with the electronic version (unless you give them the Kindle, too!).

If they can find a way to fit a few hundred paperbacks into my jeans pocket, preferably without taking out a decent chunk of rainforest I might make the switch back

I don't fully understand the pricing structure but Amazon have always seemed pretty keen for price not to be a barrier to buying a Kindle version, so I'll keep my eyes out to see if it comes down if the paperback stays at the same price.

And funny enough, being shown on BBC4 at the moment so any missed episodes available on iplayer
