The risk of Spectre is overblown, there are no known threats in the wild and you need local access to the machine. I very much doubt anyone with mission critical data is using a £400 Viglen convertible...
That make is a blast from the past!
Considering some negative comments from the previous Black Friday thread, can anyone that purchased this give any constructive feedback on their thoughts of it please.

Worth mentioning it’s a quad-core 8th gen i5. I’d assumed it was missed off the spec as it was an older dual-core model.

I got one of these for the wife, it's well made, feels premium, it's quick enough, she's very happy with it, Netflix general browsing etc. They were doing 2 years interest free through PayPal as well which was a handy bonus at Christmas.

What would you say are negatives? Is the touch responsive? How about track pad? Also is the wifi connectivity reliable? Cheers
Generic brand laptops do often have build quality issues. The main reason I didnt buy this was that someone had listed these on Gumtree with bulk discount as they had 1000 units, prior to the original HUKD deal. Why did a random person have 1000 units of unknown Viglen stock? The pessimist side of me thinks that a deal was made with the supplier to purchase units that didnt pass inspection.

Saying that, as long as Laptop Outlet are good on their warranties, it's a really good base spec for the price.

No negatives that I'm aware of, and she's not the best with technology so if she had experienced any problems I would have heard about it... I've not used it myself apart from initial setting up and testing. I'll ask her when she's next at home and post back.

Happy with mine. Only use it occasionally but it boots up fast and is responsive. For the money I'm not sure you'd get a lot better. But I'm sure there will be people telling me otherwise 😄

I’m waiting for the samsung galaxy flex book, but this will be more expensive. Apart from slim design and updated components, the main advantage of samsung is fantastic display very bright 600nits compared to the trash 300nits most laptop struggle to get. To me this is important as i will use it often as a tablet. If you want one now around this price its pretty hard but I’d recommend checking lenovo shop they sometimes have the c340 with intel 10th gen around 400£ but its not an IPS screen.

I have it. See my comments. Good value for money. Feels like a MacBook Pro.

Pros: premium feel. I don't have any issues other than the trackpad is a little stiff for my liking. Battery life good.

Cons: cheap charger (can get usb c one for £15-20 if needed)
4 he charge. Not sure if usb c is faster.
Weighs a lot. About 200g more than the £680 hp envy I had but makes a big difference to me.

Good review. Sounds like a nice bit of kit for £400 if you're not a brand snob then. Didn't know it charged over USB-C but I'd do the same thing, it's so useful carrying a single charger for things.
I have this. Very pleased with it. Great build and screen. Good spec for that price. On-board gfx limit gaming to Skrim age games. Hard to find any info on upgrade-ability.
Got mine today and very happy with it. Although I didnt pay for next day delivery it still came next day. The build quality looks ok although I wouldn't put it it Macbook level. As already said the charger seems particularly cheap. Although it has a USB c port it wont charge through it. That said the spec is excellent for the price. It boots and runs smoothly and the fingerprint reader is particularly useful. I'll install Civ VI later and see how that runs.

Are you sure. Some people have said it will charge but you will need a 65 watt charger. How much watt did you use? Next time I take to my brother's house will see if his usb c charger works.

Likewise, but I added a mouse and tweaked settings. If this is actually with win 10 pro it is a better deal than before as then it was £429 I think. I got it with eBay 20 percent off deal as code had expired. Long lasting battery which is hidden inside and not detachable.

I picked it up for £409 with win 10 pro and mouse in this deal.
Just took the plunge, I hope I don't live to regret it I've been stung by budget laptops with hi specs before with dodgy screens and trackpads.
I think i read in the other post that the RAM is soldered and therefore not upgradable, is this true?

So I have used a 65w USB C laptop charger from work which does charge via the port. My Samsung fast charger for my phone didnt work.

I am not sure how much quicker charging is with the provided charger compared to USB C as mine is never depleted enough.
I worked for a company that bought loads of viglen machines unless they have completely changed in the last 4 years i would run like the wind away from anything labelled viglen
i have one of these and generally it is good but be aware that both the headphone socket and the charger socket are the same size, one on each side of laptop. be careful when plugging in devices. cannot understand why a different size socket wasnt used for power supply.
I sent one of these back. Screen looks nice but that's about where it stops. Someone who says it's like a MacBook are way off the mark. The build quality isn't great, trying to use the touchscreen whilst in laptop mode leads to it wobbling around like jelly. And the charger is very cheap, doubt it would have lasted long.
I bought one of these for the same price back before Christmas, can share my 2 cents worth...

Initially out the box was very happy, had a premium feel (aluminium case). Turned it on and after a few hours I noticed it had a small bright white spot behind the screen towards the bottom... not the most obvious thing in the world but once you knew it was there you couldn't un-see it and for a brand new laptop I was aggrieved.

Also I found the keyboard to be fairly unresponsive and I have never had trouble typing before, found it to miss random keys when typing quickly.

Otherwise the spec is good for the money and it can charge via USB-C which is a bonus.

Ended up sending mine back and went with a refurbished HP Envy for a few bob more. Not really comparable price-wise for a brand new product so I won't nitpick, but I am glad I spent a bit extra for a slightly more premium product with well-established support.

Reckon if you get lucky or are willing to swap out a few units you'll be chuffed - for the price it might be worthwhile.

Oh great. It's no longer showing in the landing page.
I used the Promo today and it still works for the £399 price.

Didn't think they were still around.
Got this for Xmas and it's very good. Strong build after 3 months use and fast for Web browsing, streaming content. Never used the touch screen but each to there own.

Didn't think they were still around.

They didnt go away, they just stopped selling direct to the public. They became a dedicated supplier for schools. Viglen are no longer an Amstrad brand. They are now owned by a specialist IT supplier XMA, who probably have negotiated preferential pricing for components as they are a partner of Lenovo and this looks very similar to a Lenovo Yoga.

The laptops are put together in the UK at Viglen's own facilities.

There seem to be a standard percentage of quality control issues (keyboard/screen) but Viglen seem to quickly replace faulty units.

Its not a random brand. Its owned by XMA. Viglen have been selling computers since the 1980s. They were big then. They got taken over by Amstrad and sold direct to schools. So disappeared from the market but were and still are a big brand. They are easily the equivalent of HP in terms of build quality, but with cheaper pricing and much better support - for the education sector. I dont think the support can cope with selling direct to the public which is probably why they are being sold by a 3rd party.

Had mine for a few weeks now. The keyboard isn't great and it's a bit noisy, but otherwise I am quite happy with it - for £400 I don't think you'll find a much better spec than this.
drasim16/02/2020 17:21

...Why did a random person have 1000 units of unknown Viglen stock?

Carousel fraud. It's not pessimism, it's a real head-scratcher and you're absolutely right to be suspicious. Of course, there may be a totally innocent explanation for it.
