Try skyscanner... Air New Zealand is nearly £80 cheaper (than virgin's offer price) for a direct flight and then Delta is still cheaper.. this is for LA for an example...

crap airline so over rated
Quite good prices to Tokyo, especially as nonstop
Ended up on an Air France flight a few years ago from Paris to New York which was a Delta codeshare. Will never go near a Delta aircraft again. Appalling service from start to finish. Would rather have swam it.

London is all there is, isn't there?

Yes mate, and Virgin too, many times, and whilst I agree Delta aren't exactly a 5* airline, I've gotta say neither are Virgin Atlantic! Their standards are nothing like what they used to be 10 or even 5 years ago. Last time I flew Gatwick - Orlando with them 2 years past the service was so bad I actually wrote to customer relations (with no reply I might add).

Sorry for the rant mate, but I fly an awful lot. I appreciate Virgin have a big brand name, but in my experience they're nothing special, nothing more than a very expensive budget airline now (BA too for that matter I'm sorry to say), you're just a number. Anyone who's flown Emirates, Singapore, or even Turkish Airlines will know what I mean.

If Delta are cheaper than Virgin then Delta it is for me from now on... at least you know what you're getting.

Please excuse the ignorance but I'm intrigued. Planning a flight to US from LDN next year and haven't flown Delta, nor heard of them. By the sounds of things it's best left that way? Obviously don't want to fork out a fortune but I'd be happy to avoid a regrettable experience if that's most peoples opinions of Delta...?

Absolutely spot on ! I've flown all the airlines you've mentioned and couldn't agree with you more.
Useless service earlier this year to LAX

New York showing as £399 on that page. Got any dates for £375?

I think a lot of people on here are looking at Virgin through rose tinted specs ash, either that or they haven't travelled with them in a long time, if ever. For what it's worth, first time I flew with them was way back in 1994, Gatwick - Orlando, they weren't long up and running then and service was superb, new planes, great seats, personal TV/Movies, decent in-flight meals and free liquor! That was great for a while, but problem is they haven't pushed on, and rely heavily on their top-heavy marketing spin. They still have all of the above, but have cut back considerably. Planes are older, food is just ok, check in at Gatwick is chaotic, and it's got an awful lot harder to find a flight attendant when you want a free drink! ALL the US airlines operating the trans-Atlantic routes offer the same facilities, except for the free drink which you have to buy. On average though the US carriers (Delta, American, United) usually come in much cheaper than Virgin & BA, and by cheaper I mean it can be up to £300 less sometimes depending on the route!

Anyway, I've flown with them all ash, point I'm making is, if you're in Economy, your seat will be the same whoever you travel with. Flight crew on US carriers tend not to be as "glamorous", but I've never had any more problems with service than with anyone else. At the end of the day, if you're patriotic (because that's what Branson & Co rely on), and are prepared to pay £100 - £300 extra for a 7hr - 11hr flight, then half a dozen (if you're lucky) tiny beer cans or cheap wine, served up by some dolly bird in a red pencil skirt, then by all means fly Virgin!

Me, I'll never consider them again, unless they drop their prices to the same as the rest.

Just my thoughts

Typo Phil, don't get excited...
The wife works for VA and we get free flights (upgrades too! ). But we've flown with them for years before she joined them. They've always been quite good, but obviously there has been the odd issue as is probably the case with most airlines.

I feel they were probably better 10-15 years ago and I can't quite put my finger on why. Still a good airline in comparison to many others, but could be better.

I think they should concentrate more on the personalities of their crew as opposed to their looks - we fly with Monarch a lot and while their crew aren't quite so dazzling, they just have a much better and friendlier persona than other airlines we've flown with, including VA.

Lufthansa are pricing up some flights for £375 via DUS

Here don't get me wrong Phil, sod the mediocre service, if I got free flights I'd fly Virgin every time ...

Thing is we don't fly with them much - most of our holidays are in europe, hence why we fly with Monarch a lot. We didn't use any of our flights last year, or in 2011. May be going somewhere in October but not sure. If they flew shorthaul it would be great, but we hate longhaul flights so we like to stay in europe! What a waste!
Virgin are proper overrated. Having flown Qatar airlines, emirates & Singapore Airlines I know what a airline is.

Not sure how Branson gets away with it. The Virgin brand certainly let's him take liabilities
