Virgin free upgrade to 100 Mbps when you commit to another 12 months

I just checked my Virgin broadband account and there's a note there saying that I can have a free increase from my current 60 Mb to 100 Mb broadband, if I commit to a year.

Given that I'll likely be with them for a year regardless, it's effectively something for nothing.

Where in your VM account is this message? is it in your VM email?

Haven't got one in mine...

Might just be your specific deal im on 60gb and theres no offer on my virgin page just the usual upgrade to 120gb for extra money! M

unless you download heaps of things, 60mb is more than enough for browsing without commiting yourself to another term contract

Indeed it is; I was hoping this offer would also increase my upload from 3mb to 10mb - something they took off me when I "dropped" from the old 50mb to the new 60mb broadband tariff.

Is this just the general speed increase? I'm on 30 Mbps and there's a note saying they're upgrading the network between April and September next year and I can jump to 50 Mbps for free if I sign up for another year.

I've just logged on and a message appeared at the top of the page about them changing the speeds. All your doing is just pre-registering your interest.

Not really a deal, should of been in freebies, but thanks for the heads up OP.

Here is what I found in my account

"Right now you have our up to 60Mb broadband. That's really fast, but between July and December 2014 you'll be able to upgrade to super speedy up to 100Mb broadband at no extra monthly cost. All you need to do to upgrade is agree to a new 12 month contract. We'll email you when it's ready."

Not really worth of it, virgin media is very slow all the time. They promise 60 mbps speed but sometimes it takes 30-120 seconds to open a web page during day time.

I had BT before and it was super fast but price was good enough too!

Well wouldn't it be a deal seen as you're signing another 12 month contract in the process, hence spending money?

Wow, ours is fine on 60mb. Haven't you rung them up? Your power levels could be too high or too low. Try ringing them or post on the forums. They are really helpful on the forums and are actual VM staff who will book appointments and test your line to make sure

No, because your only pre-registering your interest in the service, not signing a new contract there and then.

my folks got the message for 30mbs to 50mbs

Eventually they'll upgrade you without having to sign up again
...however as we can only get 2-3 Mbs with Sky or BT I guess we're stuck with them.

I guess that 152mb is in a message to customers already on upto 100mb? As I get a change in service next week, so that will be a nice little freebie next year.

This is what it says for current 120mb users:

Even faster broadband - coming soon

Thanks OP. Great offer, I had no idea. Found this when I logged in:

nice freebie if you can keep your internet connection, mine is terrible & certainly wont be commiting to another year with them :-/

The other trick is offer to re-commit to another year for a discount on the monthly price by about 8 to 10 quid

Does this only work if you're already on 60mbp, we're on 30 after dropping down a few months a go but this could be incredibly useful right now.

I'm on 30mb to, I don't think it's a general speed increase, I think it's targeted to get people tied in for a year (when BT may be offering better deals)

I'm a bit skeptical.

I usually re-negotiate my contract around February for a year, which is usually always after they bang the price up so I think I'll wait until next Feb and use the information then when I negotiate.

my contract for a ahy 30mb is ending this month, spoke to the retentions recently and they offered another contract at £20 rather than circa £27 I am paying now. If I accept their offer, can I still preregister for upgrading to 50mb (as per message on my account)? To get the upgrade, I also have to commit for a year... confused.

I'd be surprised if it did.
Upload has always been pants for me on Virgin Media - I get quicker upload speeds on my Orange 3G than I do on Virgin's cable.

I moved onto talktalk as it was the only way to increase my upload speed without paying more.

looks like this offer is area/account specific, good deal for those that can get it though.

cold for me , why? because of the bandwidth throttling they enforce

when I had 20Mb with them, after the first GB of data they would throttle me to about 1/4 of my normal speed

so what's the point getting 100Mb? so you can download with 25Mb after your download the first GB of data?

my 20Mb with Sky **** all over my old VM connection, no caps no bloody throttling. Now with 40Mb down / 10Mb up I'm flying

VM? cold cold cold

VM have never throttled me and I download **** loads. So your experience is specific to you. Thanks.

Good deal if you get a good service. I've always had great speeds from virgin / ntl. getting full 120 down and 12 up now

Great news. Really do love the way virgin keep upping the speed.

Can't wait

Do you need a SuperHub 2 for 100mbit?
I currently have the SuperHub for my 60mbit.
Would they offer it FoC or do you need to pay?

Been a customer of theirs for a year (18 months contract). service is horrible, lots of disconnections, and that's on Fibre which supposed to be better and quicker. I'm not really sure I would want to commit as increase in 'speed' won't make a difference.

I'll probably look for them to reduce the monthly price, rather than this 'upgrade'.

good info. thanks

Just looked and I've got the "we're increasing broadband speed" message on my VM account page. The "deal" here is that we were pretty much ok when XL was 20Mb so after the upgrade so after we're moved up from our current 60Mb to the new 100Mb for XL then we could drop down a level in broadband to 50Mb at L and still be about where we are now and 2.5x faster than a speed that was pretty much fine for us last year!

As for "throttling" ... ok, just consider the current 60Mb product to be a 50Mb product that sometimes is a bit faster than it should be.

I am supposedly on 120Mb having had a free upgrade a year or so ago

I am lucky if I get 70Mb at off peak times, much slower at other times and the top package was promised not to be throttled at any time.

In other words, don't get too excited about wild promises from VM

Heat added. There was a message to pre register as won't get mine til July-December but will go from 30mbs to 50mbs free. I've no plans in changing supplier so a welcome bonus

Just logged in and was asked to pre-register for the free upgrade from 60Mb to 100Mb
