UPDATE | 31| 10 | 2018 |

You must cancel today if you wish to leave or wait for outbound retentions. Cancellations can be withdrawn anytime before your cutoff date so it’s best to go through with it and think about it later if you’ve left it this late, you’ll get a few weeks to sort it out at least

And it begins...negotiation season 2018 starts now. As can seen below Virgin Media will be increasing bills by £3 starting October 1st*. Now is the right time to start negotiating, I've managed to get my bill down every year instead of being affected by a price increase I actually benefit from it, or you are free to leave for another provider if you please. Please share and discuss any deals you were able to get, always interesting to see what people get offered.

* Depending on when you were notified you have until either September 30th or October 31st to give penalty free notice of termination. Price increases are between £3-£4 and are effective either October 1st or November 1st so make sure you check what has been communicated to you.

one thing to check is your marketing preferences, with the recent data protection changes they have added an automatic no to marketing calls on most peoples account. If you dont have marketing calls allowed you wont get the call back and no discounts. You can now change this online, within your account settings.

If they don't increase your price I would be very surprised if you can …If they don't increase your price I would be very surprised if you can cancel as you tied into the contract, but worth a try

No, the email/letter says you can cancel now if you wish. May as well cancel and see what offer they come up with.

Reminder that you have until close of play tomorrow to cancel due to the price rise (if your notification came through in September), or you are locked in until your original contract date.

What is wrong with this company?

The yearly £3 increase is getting increasingly boring now.
  4. hipko's avatar
Yes, it feel like they are increasing £3 every few months.

I think I might cancel the TV and landline, and just use mobile phone and Netflix + Amazon Prime.
  5. MrMoneySavingExpert's avatar
The main areas of why there’s a rise happening
    - Power costs for fibre has gone up
    - They wish to give employees a pay rise
    - UKTV agreement way more expensive
    - To buy a new boat for the CEO

I have an idea - would anyone be interested in filling out a public Google spreadsheet with the retention deals they have been getting?

This way we can see in an easy way what people have been getting and for what type of package, rather than scrolling through the whole thread to pick out the deals.

Well I made a mess of this!

I spoke to virgin with the full intention to cancel and move to sky, but somehow ended up upgrading from the Player bundle to the Full House bundle...

I don’t deserve to be on this website...

    WTF HOW?!

I haggle and negotiate every year, not to repeat myself but as I said in post, my bill goes down every time this happens. Sometimes I call in for no reason and ask if they have anything for me. Persistence and a bit of luck and being savvy on the phone helps too, if you get a no deal just drop and try again, it really matters who you speak to.
  17. spammy's avatar
Is everyone subject to this rise? I didn't get an email.
  18. Moody_Cloud's avatar
I've never called Virgin to get a cheaper deal as there's five of us in our home and we all share the bill every month. Got the email yesterday about the £3 increase when the last one was only six months ago and was rightly pissed off. We were paying £48 just for 200mb BB and then they're telling me it's going up for some bullshit reason.

I'm glad I saw this thread as some of the prices people are quoting has made me feel like we've been getting robbed. Called them half an hour ago and asked to be put straight through to retentions as I'm cancelling no questions asked. Guy could tell how angry I was and put me through straight away. Got through to someone else who was about to feed me stats of my usage to which I promptly interrupted him and told him to proceed with my cancellation, because instead of making me feel valued he was trying to make me feel like even more of a mug.

At this point he said he'd talk to his "senior" staff and get back to me. After being on hold for a couple of minutes he came back and offered me an immediate £30 credit on my account and a reduction of my bill from £48 a month to £32. I held my ground and asked him to do better because that still didn't feel good enough and I'd proceed with my cancellation. He put me on hold again and came back to me with a "final offer" of £30 credit, an increase of my speed from 200mb to 350mb at £30 per month. I accepted this offer.

Play hard ball with these guys and sound extremely angry and underappreciated when you call. They can feel the discontent in your voice and will do what it takes to keep you as a customer. As mentioned, I had never called about cancelling or complaining in the past but this was the last straw and I made that clear to them. Don't let these fuckers rob you. Stand firm and when they realise you aren't kidding they'll do what they can to keep you. Good to luck to everyone and thanks to the others in this thread who pushed me to demand a better deal after being robbed the past few years. (edited)

Hello, I just contacted virgin media for the third time in the space of 7 days finally got my deal I was looking for been with virgin media since 2010 paying around £43 for 200mb broadband and line rental.

First call they told me why are calling up asking for discounts your package is a great bargain.
I was like are you being serious man.

Second call the same day they told me no deal over the phone lady over the phone was very rude and shouting. (She said you pay £46 THAT WHAT YOU MUST PAY I SAID REMOVE MY PHONE LINE I PAY LESS EACH MONTH SHE SAID NO THAT WILL BE £46 STILL) I said to myself that it you guys want war let it begin i will not give up will keep calling nonstop.

Third call I made sure they put me over to a manager or customer relations they said no manager was available.
I then asked to put me though to customer relations. (This call lasted me over 40 minutes.)
They first offered me £35 for 200meg +phone line I said you are joking right they said wait one minute.
Second offered me £30 for 200meg + phone line I said you must do better.
Third offer they came back £24 for 200meg +phone line (12 months) final offer we will give you one month free for the hassle we caused.
So guys don't give up fight for your deal you will get it at the end. (edited)

This is what i did if anyone is still struggling to get a deal with retention

So all i wanted was just broadband.. That's it! As i hate Tivo and don't use the phone line at all! But when i signed up to Virgin i said i just wanted broadband, but they offered everything else with the broadband like Tivo and phone. Been paying £37.49 and it will now go up. Asked to leave and got a quote for £28 a month... So i asked to leave. But no one called back...

I think it all depends on a number of factors... Like :

    * How long you've been with Virgin media
    * What current package you have
    * And most importantly... Who your speaking to...

I called Virgin back, hoping i could speak to the right person... But i just found some Virgin staff rude and just not giving a s**t at all...

After looking though the comments on Hotukdeals, someone recommended to just call them and request a call back from retention... First person i spoke to asking this just didn't want to know and claimed she was from retention... Second time i called, this guy answered and said no problem... weird!! again i think it's just depends on who you speak to.. Either way i finally got someone to say that retention would give me a call and offer a better deal. The deal they offered before was £28 for just broadband.. But on Virgin's website right now! There's an offer for free speed boost to 100mb and phoneline for £27!! Which made no sense to me!!

Next day, got a call from retention as promised, and I got a deal for £22 a month for just 100MB for 18 months. Now that isn't the best deal some have got on here. Others I've seen have got bigger packages and better deals.. But like i mentioned before.. I think this depends on your current package you have with Virgin, who you get through to etc. I'm happy with that. Being that some have not even got a call back like me or not even been given an offer to begin with!

If you wanna stay with Virgin. I'd say just keep calling Virgin. Once your at the main menu. press 4 --- Then 5 --- and you'll get through to someone. First ask whats the best offer, then quote that offer with someone like Sky or BT etc. Even look on Virgin website or look on Cable.co.uk to quote better offers. The guy i spoke to then said they'll put through a request to retention. So i genuinely feel its really down to who you speak to. When retention did call back, the number that called me was 0800 183 6407. I asked Virgin retention to call me on my mobile, and they did.

Hope this helps anyone else trying to get a good deal!

I have a very close friend who works in this department. The deals are awesome. It's account specific so some people will get the deals a few £ more or less. Feel free to message me if you want him to give you a call. The last day the outbound retention team is allowed to call you is Tuesday the 6th November 7pm.

Was actually on the phone to virgin media yesterday lol bill was due to go up from £60 to £75. Rang guy says the best he can get it down to is £74 as a new costumer. Of course i burst out laughing and asked to speak to retentions. Girl got my current package down to £64 but i got changed my tv to the mix rather than full house bundle and got it for £51. Thats tivo box Internet and land-line. Av rang up randomly too and asked for free equipment upgrades too which av always gotten. So definitely chance your arm.

100mb would be plenty. In my company we share a 50mb line between 100 employees and no-one complains of the speed. Nobody needs more than 100mb, its just marketing BS to make people think its faster. A 1000mb line will load a website just as fast as a 10mb line.

Or did you completely reject and got a another callback ? I handed my 30 days notices as the women on the phone was useless and didn’t keen to keep me

Phoned up Monday no offer he told me to paid full price £40
Phoned up Tuesday they offered me £35 100 meg with phone line 12 month contract I reject.
Phoned up Wednesday they offered me £25 100 meg with phone line 12 month contract I reject
Phoned up Thursday Handed in my 30 days notice
Recieved a phone call Thursday afternoon saying they will offer me 100 meg with phone line for £23 I reject told them give me a better offer they came back with £20 100 meg with phone line and 2 months free.

I probably annoyed the virgin customer relations team so much they like give this person a good offer before he phone up again. lol

Had some condescending woman a few weeks back going on about I used 500Gb, 5x the average bla bla bla and her overall tone was just so rude when I kept telling her to put the cancellation in she was doing the most to keep me on the line and wouldn't let me go kept going on about how it would be worse for me elsewhere and no one can offer me the speeds, I kept saying I want to go through with cancellation but she wouldn't shut up or let me get a word in going on about how I would never get a better deal anywhere. Eventually I just talked over her and demanded the cancellation.

HOLY **** I just called VM right now and made up a story, told the guy that the guy I spoke to a few days ago said he would put £50 credit on my account but I don’t see it. The guy looked at my details and then added it and sorted it for me just like that. That effectively gives me 350Mbps for £21 (edited)

I think the highest credit you can get given from loyalty is £50, I had a scour of this thread before I tried it. That's me sorted for this year I'll settle for Vivid 350 £21 per month.

They are being really awkward, also saying as i'm already on a discount I'm not paying full price and the rise won't take me over the full price...no-one pays their advertised price, dirty tactics and horrible company to deal with.

I wouldn't worry - the vast majority of people in the country only have access to ADSL/fibre, not Virgin. They browse, stream, play games, download and do internet based stuff perfectly well - most of us do most activities on our phones on mobile data too without issue. It is only those of us with access to Virgin that have been indoctrinated into believing we need these higher speeds when lower would probably suit most needs. (edited)
