I've just skimmed it but I pay less than £34 for phone line and 50g broadband. Is this a good deal?

A bit deceptive from Virgin as the line rental is built into the monthly cost. I personally think the whole line rental thing is a big scam, just another way the UK consumer gets shafted.

You need a line to get broadband into the home, how is that a scam???

Usually the line is 'rented' off BT. Virgin (as a fibre optic provider) have never charged for line rental, since they don't need to rent the line. They have services outside of their fibre service that provides the same sort of service as EE, Sky etc though, and for that they do charge line rental (they have no choice). Providers that use BT lines never factor the line rental into the cost, and I think this is a bit of a con to be honest - particularly given some of these providers operate in areas where Virgin DO have fibre network and would therefore offer a significantly cheaper option for those who don't want a land line (a number that increases all the time).

I pay £16 a month to Virgin - I rang and haggled. I get about 75mbps down and about 7.5mbps up since they upgraded my speed. I can't fault that price!

I dont think there is a better deal for students than this, if someone else can find a better 9 month contract please post it

Clever [email protected]@@@@,

It's a crappy deal, unless you only want a 9 month contract in which case its pretty good...

im with virgin on 12 month contract pay £34 for fast broadband line rental /24 7 phone calls and tivo box ,so dont think is is a very good deal at all !!

I think the Activation Fee and Installation Fee kill this deal but otherwise very tempting!

im not sure but i think its cheaper to get a broadband and telephone for 12months from Virgin with quidco

Edit:
its not

(£331 for 12 months with quidco) equals £36.77 over 9 months that s student would use it.

is that a 9 month contract?

Existing customers get £30.25/mth for 70 Mbps (cable only, no phone line) and retention deals of 12-month 50 Mbps contract for £26/mth, or 12-month 20 Mbps contract with 30 GB monthly cap for £17/mth. Students have access to JANET so home internet costs should be minimized and far lower than £34/mth. Worth asking what the per-month break-charge is for early cancellation.

Rubbish deal.I get 100mb bb evening and weekend calls m+ tv caller id.£27 a month including line rental

I'm already contracted with them.
they won't let me switch

Well, based on the fact that everyone will have to do it, I rather expect they'll see it as an opporuntunity to put the overall prices up for new customers.

Most people do not pay a standing charge (which is what line rental is) on electric or gas.

Call straight through to their retentions department by following the menu to "leaving for other reasons". Ask them what the break charge will be for ending the contract (probably some percentage of the charge per month for the months remaining). If you can save more than this with a different contract they or others might on offer, it would be worthwhile to end the contract and pay the charge. Your mileage may vary.

That's a little silly??? Virgin don't pipe the broadband through a phone line.. I don't have a landline but use Virgin for broadband. I currently have 60mb for 22.99 a month with them. No install fee just walked into a shop and asked. Got a box with everything I needed and installed myself. Was 17.99 until a price hike

Nothing to do with the deal but I'm paying £19.25 per month for 50MBit broadband only.
Best thing with Virgin is you can get a good deal with retentions at the end of your contract.
